For the sentiment: emotions as practice in the development of eighteenth-century British abolitionism

At the end of the eighteenth century the British movement for the abolition of the slave trade emerged, arguing for reform based on notions of humanity and the fellow-feeling of mutual sympathy. With slavery still one of the biggest and most profitable crimes in the world today, how public sentiment was mobilised to create the first humanitarian movement to attempt to put an end to the slave trade remains a pertinent question. The chief aim of this thesis is to investigate the development of abolitionist emotional norms, evidenced in their mobilising materials, through an exploration of “emotional practices”, Monique Scheer’s concept for historical change in emotions. This approach, when combined with Barbara Rosenwein’s concept of “emotional communities” and the rescripting of emotional norms, opens up the possibility of engaging with abolitionist texts in a new way, giving access to the methodology behind their politically engaged appeals to emotions like compassion and benevolence. Through analysis of the sentimental arguments employed across a range of texts, written both before and during the abolition campaigns, I uncover the centrality of the idea of emotional cultivation and improvement to the political agenda of abolitionist writers. In doing so I argue that there is a congruence between eighteenth-century theories of potentially transformative moral sentiments and the assumptions about the plasticity of human nature and emotions that informs emotions as a kind of practice. However, I do so while acknowledging that there are fundamental eschatological and teleological differences between the two. The politics of sympathy expressed by abolitionist academics, newspaper correspondents, preachers and divines, writers of fiction, and poets had an educative, progressivist, moral purpose which post-Romantic theories of emotions have revised or discarded. Through their conviction that steady cultivation of the moral sentiments led to active and virtuous reform of society, abolitionists give their own account of the historical and emotional changes that saw communities within Britain come together to fight for abolition. Their conviction in the efficacy of their politics of sympathy may have wavered once their attempts at sentimental moral persuasion failed in the combative context of parliamentary debate. However, the question for my thesis is not whether emotional practice can answer why abolitionism developed or why it did or did not succeed. Rather, the question I ask is whether an emotions-as-practice approach can give an effective account of the methods by which communities manage emotions and how they understand the emotional shifts which contribute, alongside other socio- and cultural historic factors, to social change.Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, School of Humanities, 201

Rosa Cappiello’s 'Paese Fortunato' and the Poetics of Alienation

    Get PDF
Peer-reviewed article. The paper characterises Rosa Cappiello’s art in Paese fortunato as the poetics of alienation. The narratorprotagonist’s portrayal of the first two years she spent in Sydney took little account of the emerging politics of Australian multiculturalism. Rather, her unselfconscious use of labels that categorise according to ethnicity (‘the Greek girls’/‘those lousy Greek cows’, ‘the Turk’s child’, ‘the pretty Lebanese poofter’, ‘the Yugoslavs’, ‘the French and Danish women’) portrays a deeply divided vision of Australian society. Her isolation is completed by her sense of disconnection from the Italian Australian community, which she detests for what she sees as its crass materialism and its reduction of life to ‘the feverish race for gain’. This suggests that her alienation may not have been the result only of the migration and settlement experience but that it had its roots in her personal pre-migrant life and in deep-seated notions of national identity. With regards to her negative depictions of ethnic characters, we have hypothesised that her sense of alienation was intensified by her critical and literary background. In the second half of the paper, we focus on the author’s experimentation with syntactic categories in order to create effects of fragmentation. Pivotal to the discussion is the tension between physical survival and the genesis of her art, with the discussion then widening to show how Cappiello’s poetics reflect the experiential contours of separation, marginalisation and exile, not only from the perspective of the migrant, but within other sectors of society

Today there is a development in process in the central port area in Kalmar Municipality where a university and a hotel business will be built. This will result in increased visitor pressure in Sylvanderparken. The purpose of this Bachelor's thesis is to develop a program and visualize it to suggest solutions to how Sylvanderparken in central Kalmar can develop. The focus in the program is on creating possibilities that promote meeting places in the park. The paper is divided into two parts – preliminary studies and an analysis. The preliminary study combines information from literature, an inventory and observations of the park with interviews as well as an inspiration visit in Hornsberg’s Beach Park, in Stockholm. The analysis part covers a space- and site analysis. The City of Stockholm’s sociotope qualities and Kalmar Municipality’s information map were used to trace which values are available and which are missing in the park. The results show that Sylvanderparken is used for transportation between central Kalmar and the surrounding nodes, such as Kalmar Castle, and that the water is of major importance for the residence in the park. It also appears that the noise from the road, at the outer edge of the park, is a disturbing factor for the experience of the park. Based on the compilation of the interview, the observations, the analyses and the inspiration visit, a program was developed that will serve as guidelines for the design of the park. The program treats lighting, structure, places to visit and noise protection in the park. The program also treats how to increase the contact between the park and the water. In order to visualize the program in an accessible manner, two renderings were created. The renderings show how the park can increase its contact with the water and how the lighting can illuminate the park. Finally, there is a discussion regarding why several analyses were used and how the material from Kalmar Municipality contributed to and affected the results

The issue of recognition, validation and certification of skills, especially those developed in non-formal and informal fields, is becoming a current topic for all educative institutions, including University. Soft skills is a psycho-sociological term relating to a cluster of personality traits, social abilities, communication, language, personal attitudes that characterize relationships with other people. Soft skills complement hard skills which are the occupational requirements of a job and many other activities. In Italy the legal framework on skills is leaded by the Legislative Decree n. 13/13. According to the Decree, University should assure the effective implementation of lifelong learning through guidance and counselling services. The University of Macerata (UNIMC) has been involved from a long time in the field of soft skills with many activities, formal as well as informal and non-formal. A system to recognize and validate them has been experienced in the last years. The objective of the paper is to describe the designed procedures aimed to the recognition and validation of soft skills such as observation, active listening, communication in small group and problem solving. Each skill was operationalized through the identification of specific indicators to recognize three level of expertise: basic, intermediate, advanced. Moreover several tasks were tested in order to identify a set of activities useful for the aim of a kind of formal recognition

Low cost housing delivery program : an interpretive systems approach.

Thesis (M.Com.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville, 2010.As enshrined in the post-apartheid South African constitution, access to basic services like potable water, sanitation and formal housing has become a basic right for all South Africans. The delivery of low-cost housing through the national and provincial Departments of Human Settlement is one of the major focuses of the post-apartheid South African Government. South Africa today (2010) still has massive shortages of low-cost housing for the poor, despite funding being made available to address this need. Millions of poor families live in shacks in informal settlements and in overcrowded townships where small (250 to 300 square metre) erven with one bedroom dwellings and rudimentary extensions and backyard shacks erected on them often house more than one family while they await access to housing subsidies. The Eastern Cape Province is one of the poorest provinces in South Africa, with a significantly poor rural community and dense urban settlements which have sprouted all over as a result of urban migration and population growth. According to the Provincial Human Settlement Department, the Eastern Cape has a backlog of approximately 370,000 low-cost houses. Several low cost housing projects have been initiated in the province. The projects are implemented using different partnership strategies and they produce different outcomes, which are in no way near the desired outcomes of meeting the demand of supplying quality houses in the shortest possible time (E Cape Government Department of Human Settlement). In terms of the project management norms, standards and processes of the building industry, it takes two builders, one plumber and five labourers five days to build a fifty square metre low-cost housing unit. Yet some projects, as small as 200 housing units, have taken more than 10 years to complete for one reason or the other. Often when the houses are perceived to be complete it becomes evident that their quality is of an unacceptable standard, and some unmet desired objectives. Some project sites in rural towns of the former Transkei have been abandoned due to failures in implementation. Furthermore, some project sites which start off as green fields have been invaded by poor communities who build rudimentary shack dwellings on the sites in a sign of desperation, impatience and frustration at the pace of delivery (among other reasons) with a huge unfavourable financial impact on the implementation of the planned projects. The problems impacting on low-cost housing delivery are a combination of hard systems (processes, procedures, costing, programming and so on) and soft systems (the human element). The problems and risks described as being associated with housing projects are many and varied, depending who is talking, and in some instances it is difficult to describe the problems in words (unstructured and complex problems). This study concentrates on the human element associated with the implementation processes by critically examining the roles of the multitude of stakeholders who are identified as partners in the projects. Such partnerships are a huge contributing factor to the success or failure of a programme. This study looks at minimising project implementation risks through the establishment of effective cross-sector partnership frameworks. The positive and negative impacts of partners in low-cost housing project management and implementation are critically examined using Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) with a view to improving service delivery. In this paper we will attempt to outline a phenomenology of attention centered around the concepts of interest and selection. We will start with an analysis of Husserl’s notion of attention, then turn to the reflections of William James, Alfred Schutz and Erving Goffman, all of whom recognized the fundamental role attention plays in the processes by which social actors frame and define reality. Finally, we will consider Bernhard Waldenfels’ ethics of attention. He offers an ethics based on openness to and recognition of the other that, above all, offers both a response and an antidote to xenology and xenopolitics

    Get PDF
The urbanization is a rapid movement that has been continuously increasing for the last one hundred years in several places around the world. In Brazil, poverty and urban migration have led to informal settlements, also known as favelas, in cities such as Rio de Janeiro. Several favelas deal daily with challenges due to densely constructed buildings with insufficient natural light, narrow roads and alleys that affect transport possibilities, risks of landslides and incomplete water and cleaning systems. Several of these problems can be solved with better planned landscape architecture and management of public spaces in the favela. Lack of communication and dialogue between the government and the citizens has resulted in that public spaces and landscape architecture in the favela has not been designed for the citizens. Possibilities for communication and dialogue with the residents in the favela should be investigated to collect planning material that can create good landscaping and urban development. The purpose of this master's thesis is to investigate and gather information about citizens' perceptions and values about their living area, in the chosen area of Vila Laboriaux in Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro. The study focuses on creating design guidelines and a planning material based on the inhabitants’ knowledge and information about Vila Laboriaux shared in the interview and survey, as well as our observational and inventory studies, for future landscape development of the area. The result shows that there is inadequate communication between residents of Vila Laboriaux and the government of Rio de Janeiro. The result from the interview and survey studies shows that most inhabitants have not been involved in the decision making regarding their neighborhood. Furthermore, they appreciate and wish that the government invested more resources in Vila Laboriaux and the favela. The residents of Vila Laboriaux primarily want a well-functioning infrastructure with better transportation options, better access to health care and schools, preventions for future landslides and a better waste management system.
