Legal Terminology and Lesser Used Languages: The Case of Mòcheno
Since 2003 the Institute for Specialised Communication and Multilingualism of the European Academy of Bolzano (EURAC) offers education courses in legal terminology work, coupled with introductions in related/complementary disciplines, e.g. documentation, specialised translation and technical writing. Next to professional trainings, the Institute held also ad-hoc courses, such as a two-day course organised in 2008 for the Mòcheni, a Germanic minority living in the Italian Province of Trento. Since the passing of provincial law no. 6/2008, which foresees specific measures for the protection and promotion of local language minorities, the Mòcheno-speaking community has the right to use their language in all situations of social, economic and administrative life in both oral and written communications. Notwithstanding the recent compilation of a standard grammar, the Mòcheno language is not yet developed for the use in technical and specialised contexts. Indeed, the most urgent needs seem to exist in the translation of administrative terminology
High order direct Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian schemes on moving Voronoi meshes with topology changes
We present a new family of very high order accurate direct
Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) Finite Volume (FV) and Discontinuous
Galerkin (DG) schemes for the solution of nonlinear hyperbolic PDE systems on
moving 2D Voronoi meshes that are regenerated at each time step and which
explicitly allow topology changes in time.
The Voronoi tessellations are obtained from a set of generator points that
move with the local fluid velocity. We employ an AREPO-type approach, which
rapidly rebuilds a new high quality mesh rearranging the element shapes and
neighbors in order to guarantee a robust mesh evolution even for vortex flows
and very long simulation times. The old and new Voronoi elements associated to
the same generator are connected to construct closed space--time control
volumes, whose bottom and top faces may be polygons with a different number of
sides. We also incorporate degenerate space--time sliver elements, needed to
fill the space--time holes that arise because of topology changes. The final
ALE FV-DG scheme is obtained by a redesign of the fully discrete direct ALE
schemes of Boscheri and Dumbser, extended here to moving Voronoi meshes and
space--time sliver elements. Our new numerical scheme is based on the
integration over arbitrary shaped closed space--time control volumes combined
with a fully-discrete space--time conservation formulation of the governing PDE
system. In this way the discrete solution is conservative and satisfies the GCL
by construction.
Numerical convergence studies as well as a large set of benchmarks for
hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) demonstrate the accuracy and
robustness of the proposed method. Our numerical results clearly show that the
new combination of very high order schemes with regenerated meshes with
topology changes lead to substantial improvements compared to direct ALE
methods on conforming meshes
SUMMARY: This work has been carried out within the framework of the rapid prototyping (RP) systems studies and has the aim to build simple metal components (particularly brass) with the technique of the three dimensional printing (3DP). The thesis is divided into the following main parts: characterization of the materials (brass powders and binder) realization of a workbench and developing of a control interface tuning of the printing parameters The first part is related to the particle-size analysis of brass powders (for the fist time employed in 3DP experiences), the study of the wet ability of the selected binder fluid (Colloidal silica in Ethylene glycol) and the evaluation of the interaction grain-binder with preliminary tests before printing with the inkjet-head. The second part regards the assembly of a structure with motorized guides in manner to consent the moving of the head on the workspace, the development of a circuit with microcontroller for the activation (with PWM signal) of the selected nozzle, and of the control program to coordinate the moving of the inkjet-head with the control of the firing of the nozzle in order to realize the desired geometry of each section of the 3D component. The final part deals with the several experimental experiences about the improvement of the system and the optimization of the parameters in particular before with ink printing on paper and metal to study the influence of the PWM signal on the characteristics (size, form, speed) of the droplets produced by the orifice, next with printing with binder on the powderbed in order to characterize the primitive line, the section, the 3D model
BUDUJĄC MOSTY MIĘDZY TEORIĄ I PRAKTYKĄ: ROZWÓJ TERMINOLOGII W RAMACH PRAWA I ADMINISTRACJI
The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the workflow for the elaboration of multilingual terminology in the legal and administrative domain. Next to giving a short overview over each single step in the workflow, we focus on two important aspects that make multilingual terminology work in the legal domain so challenging and partly different from multilingual terminology work in other domains: the micro-comparative approach and the strong involvement of domain experts. Finally, we discuss a series of practical aspects that distinguish work in the legal domain from terminology work in other domains and partly even clash against some of the requirements set by general terminology theory and practice.
Transcriptomic signatures of neuronal differentiation and their association with risk genes for autism spectrum and related neuropsychiatric disorders.
Genes for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are also implicated in fragile X syndrome (FXS), intellectual disabilities (ID) or schizophrenia (SCZ), and converge on neuronal function and differentiation. The SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cell line, the most widely used system to study neurodevelopment, is currently discussed for its applicability to model cortical development. We implemented an optimal neuronal differentiation protocol of this system and evaluated neurodevelopment at the transcriptomic level using the CoNTeXT framework, a machine-learning algorithm based on human post-mortem brain data estimating developmental stage and regional identity of transcriptomic signatures. Our improved model in contrast to currently used SH-SY5Y models does capture early neurodevelopmental processes with high fidelity. We applied regression modelling, dynamic time warping analysis, parallel independent component analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis to identify activated gene sets and networks. Finally, we tested and compared these sets for enrichment of risk genes for neuropsychiatric disorders. We confirm a significant overlap of genes implicated in ASD with FXS, ID and SCZ. However, counterintuitive to this observation, we report that risk genes affect pathways specific for each disorder during early neurodevelopment. Genes implicated in ASD, ID, FXS and SCZ were enriched among the positive regulators, but only ID-implicated genes were also negative regulators of neuronal differentiation. ASD and ID genes were involved in dendritic branching modules, but only ASD risk genes were implicated in histone modification or axonal guidance. Only ID genes were over-represented among cell cycle modules. We conclude that the underlying signatures are disorder-specific and that the shared genetic architecture results in overlaps across disorders such as ID in ASD. Thus, adding developmental network context to genetic analyses will aid differentiating the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders
Multilingual Legal Terminology on the Jibiki Platform: The LexALP Project
International audienceThis paper presents the particular use of "Jibiki" (Papillon's web server develop- ment platform) for the LexALP1 project. LexALP's goal is to harmonise the ter- minology on spatial planning and sustain- able development used within the Alpine Convention2, so that the member states are able to cooperate and communicate efficiently in the four official languages (French, German, Italian and Slovene). To this purpose, LexALP uses the Jibiki plat- form to build a term bank for the con- trastive analysis of the specialised termi- nology used in six different national legal systems and four different languages. In this paper we present how a generic plat- form like Jibiki can cope with a new kind of dictionary
A mutation in caspase-9 decreases the expression of BAFFR and ICOS in patients with immunodeficiency and lymphoproliferation
Lymphocyte apoptosis is mainly induced by either death receptor-dependent activation of caspase-8 or mitochondria-dependent activation of caspase-9. Mutations in caspase-8 lead to autoimmunity/lymphoproliferation and immunodeficiency. This work describes a heterozygous H237P mutation in caspase-9 that can lead to similar disorders. H237P mutation was detected in two patients: Pt1 with autoimmunity/lymphoproliferation, severe hypogammaglobulinemia and Pt2 with mild hypogammaglobulinemia and Burkitt lymphoma. Their lymphocytes displayed defective caspase-9 activity and decreased apoptotic and activation responses. Transfection experiments showed that mutant caspase-9 display defective enzyme and proapoptotic activities and a dominant-negative effect on wild-type caspase-9. Ex vivo analysis of the patients' lymphocytes and in vitro transfection experiments showed that the expression of mutant caspase-9 correlated with a downregulation of BAFFR (B-cell-activating factor belonging to the TNF family (BAFF) receptor) in B cells and ICOS (inducible T-cell costimulator) in T cells. Both patients carried a second inherited heterozygous mutation missing in the relatives carrying H237P: Pt1 in the transmembrane activator and CAML interactor (TACI) gene (S144X) and Pt2 in the perforin (PRF1) gene (N252S). Both mutations have been previously associated with immunodeficiencies in homozygosis or compound heterozygosis. Taken together, these data suggest that caspase-9 mutations may predispose to immunodeficiency by cooperating with other genetic factors, possibly by downregulating the expression of BAFFR and ICO
PCR detection of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. basilici on basil
Sixty-nine amplified DNA fragments, generated from different isolates of Fusarium oxysporum
f. sp. basilici, were tested for F. oxysporum f. sp. basilici–specificity in a dot blot assay. One
1,038-bp fragment hybridized to DNA from all F. oxysporum f. sp. basilici isolates but not to
DNA obtained from F. oxysporum isolates nonpathogenic to basil or representatives of other
formae speciales of F. oxysporum, or from isolates of F. redolens, F. tabacinum, Rhizoctonia
solani, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, S. minor, and Pythium ultimum obtained from diseased basil.
This fragment was cloned and sequenced, and three pairs of F. oxysporum f. sp. basilici–
specific primers were designed, giving rise to amplification products of 943, 382, and 330 bp. A
nested PCR assay allowed detection of F. oxysporum f. sp. basilici in diseased seedlings and in
artificially and naturally contaminated seeds. The theoretical detection limit of this system was
102 fungal propagules per 100 seeds on artificially contaminated samples, while on naturally
contaminated commercial seed lots, 32 propagules per 100 seeds were detected
Identification of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. basilici isolated from soil, basil seed, and plants by RAPD analysis
Fifty-two isolates of Fusarium oxysporum, obtained from infected basil plants, seed, flower
residues, and soil from different growing areas in Italy and Israel, were analyzed by random
amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR), coupled to a DNA
extraction protocol from colonies grown on Fusarium-selective medium. In a pathogenicity
assay, 35 isolates caused 32 to 92% disease on seedlings of the highly susceptible basil cultivar
Fine verde, while 17 isolates were nonpathogenic on basil. Thirty of the F. oxysporum f. sp.
basilici isolates obtained from soil or wilted plants gave identical amplification patterns using
31 different random primers. All tested primers allowed clear differentiation of F. oxysporum f.
sp. basilici from representatives of other formae speciales and from nonpathogenic strains of F.
oxysporum. RAPD profiles obtained from DNA of isolates extracted directly from cultures
grown on Fusarium selective medium were identical to those obtained from DNA extracted
from lyophilized myceli
Terminološki rad u pravnom području za lokalne manjine: primjer njemačkoga u Južnom Tirolu
The paper outlines the challenges of doing legal terminology work in Italian and German to support the development of a local-only minority language (South Tyrolean German) and to foster communication with other German-speaking countries. The target groups of terminology – legal experts, language mediators and the public – have different needs and expectations that were addressed in the Information System for Legal Terminology bistro by exploiting specific terminological data categories, by seeking a compromise when drafting definitions and by implementing technical functions.
