    Efficient fault diagnosis of helicopter gearboxes

    Application of a diagnostic system to a helicopter gearbox is presented. The diagnostic system is a nonparametric pattern classifier that uses a multi-valued influence matrix (MVIM) as its diagnostic model and benefits from a fast learning algorithm that enables it to estimate its diagnostic model from a small number of measurement-fault data. To test this diagnostic system, vibration measurements were collected from a helicopter gearbox test stand during accelerated fatigue tests and at various fault instances. The diagnostic results indicate that the MVIM system can accurately detect and diagnose various gearbox faults so long as they are included in training

    Rotor Eddy-Current loss in permanent-magnet brushless AC machines

    This paper analyzes rotor eddy-current loss in permanent-magnet brushless ac machines. It is shown that analytical or finite-element techniques published in literature for predicting rotor eddy-current loss using space harmonic based approaches may not yield correct results in each magnet segment when one magnet-pole is circumferentially segmented into more than two pieces. It is also shown that the eddy-current loss in each equally segmented piece may differ by a large margin, which implies that the temperature distribution in the magnets will be uneven and the risk of demagnetization has to be carefully assessed. The theoretical derivation is validated by time-stepped transient finite-element analysis

    Placement solutions for multiple versions of a multimedia object

    Transcoding is an important technology which adapts the same multimedia object to diverse mobile appliances; thus, users' requests for a specified version of a multimedia object could be served by a more detailed version cached according to transcoding. Therefore, it is of particularly theoretical and practical necessity to determine the proper versions to be cached at a node such that the specified objective is achieved. In this paper, we address the problem of multimedia object placement. The performance objective is to minimize the total access cost by considering both transmission cost and transcoding cost. We present an optimal dynamic programming-based solution for this problem. The performance of the proposed solutions is evaluated with a set of carefully designed simulation experiments for various performance metrics over a wide range of system parameters. The simulation results show that our solution consistently and significantly outperforms comparison solutions in terms of all the performance metrics considered.Keqiu Li, Hong Shen, Francis Y. L.     On Improving Capacity and Delay in Multi Tx/Rx Wireless Mesh Networks with Weighted Links

    This paper considers the problem of deriving a link schedule for Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA)-based concurrent transmit/receive Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) that results in low end-to-end delays as well as high network capacity. We first propose a MAX-CUT heuristic approach, called Algo-2, that maximizes link activations in each slot of a super-frame. Algo-2 is shown to produce better network capacity as compared to existing heuristic approaches and significantly improves the super-frame length of an existing MAX-CUT approach that enforces 2-phase transmit receive restriction – a node that transmits (receives) in slot i ≥ 1 is to become a receiver (transmitter) in slot i + 1. Then, we propose a heuristic solution, called BDA, as a complement to existing schedulers to reduce transmission delays. Since BDA only reorders slots in the super-frame, it maintains each original schedule's super-frame length, and hence capacity, while reducing delays by up to 70% in 6-node random topology networks

    A new broken U(1)-symmetry in extreme type-II superconductors

    A phase transition within the molten phase of the Abrikosov vortex system without disorder in extreme type-II superconductors is found via large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations. It involves breaking a U(1)-symmetry, and has a zero-field counterpart, unlike vortex lattice melting. Its hallmark is the loss of number-conservation of connected vortex paths threading the entire system {\it in any direction}, driving the vortex line tension to zero. This tension plays the role of a generalized ``stiffness'' of the vortex liquid, and serves as a probe of the loss of order at the transition, where a weak specific heat anomaly is found.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Coherent Molecular Optics using Sodium Dimers

    Coherent molecular optics is performed using two-photon Bragg scattering. Molecules were produced by sweeping an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate through a Feshbach resonance. The spectral width of the molecular Bragg resonance corresponded to an instantaneous temperature of 20 nK, indicating that atomic coherence was transferred directly to the molecules. An autocorrelating interference technique was used to observe the quadratic spatial dependence of the phase of an expanding molecular cloud. Finally, atoms initially prepared in two momentum states were observed to cross-pair with one another, forming molecules in a third momentum state. This process is analogous to sum-frequency generation in optics
