Preliminary operational results from the Willard solar power system
The solar powered system located near Willard, New Mexico, generates mechanical or electrical power at a capacity of 19 kW (25 HP). The solar collection system incorporates east/west tracking parabolic trough collectors with a total aperture area of 1275 sq m (13,720 sq ft). The hot oil type thermal energy storage is sufficient for approximately 20 hours of power system operation. The system utilizes a reaction type turbine in conjunction with an organic Rankine cycle engine. Total collector field efficiency reaches a maximum of 20 percent near the winter solstice and about 50 percent during the summer. During the month of July, 1979, the system pumped 60 percent of the 35,300 cu m (28.6 acre-feet) of water delivered. Operating efficiencies for the turbine component, organic Rankine cycle engine and the complete power system are respectively 65 to 75 percent, 12 to 15 percent and 5 to 6 percent. Significant maintenance time was expended on both the collector and power systems throughout the operational period
Association of Fidaxomicin with C. difficile spores: Effects of Persistence on Subsequent Spore Recovery, Outgrowth and Toxin Production.
Background: We have previously shown that fidaxomicin instillation prevents spore recovery in an in-vitro gut model, whereas vancomycin does not. The reasons for this are unclear. Here, we have investigated persistence of fidaxomicin and vancomycin on C. difficile spores, and examined post-antibiotic exposure spore recovery, outgrowth and toxin production. Methods: Prevalent UK C. difficile ribotypes (n=10) were incubated with 200mg/L fidaxomicin, vancomycin or a non-antimicrobial containing control for 1 h in faecal filtrate or Phosphate Buffered Saline. Spores were washed three times with faecal filtrate or phosphate buffered saline, and residual spore-associated antimicrobial activity was determined by bioassay. For three ribotypes (027, 078, 015), antimicrobial-exposed, faecal filtrate-washed spores and controls were inoculated into broth. Viable vegetative and spore counts were enumerated on CCEYL agar. Percentage phase bright spores, phase dark spores and vegetative cells were enumerated by phase contrast microscopy at 0, 3, 6, 24 and 48 h post-inoculation. Toxin levels (24 and 48h) were determined by cell cytotoxicity assay. Results: Fidaxomicin, but not vancomycin persisted on spores of all ribotypes following washing in saline (mean=10.1mg/L; range= 4.0-14mg/L) and faecal filtrate (mean =17.4mg/L; 8.4-22.1mg/L). Outgrowth and proliferation rates of vancomycin-exposed spores were similar to controls, whereas fidaxomicin-exposed spores showed no vegetative cell growth after 24 and 48 h. At 48h, toxin levels averaged 3.7 and 3.3 relative units (RU) in control and vancomycin-exposed samples, respectively, but were undetectable in fidaxomicin-exposed samples. Conclusion: Fidaxomicin persists on C. difficile spores, whereas vancomycin does not. This persistence prevents subsequent growth and toxin production in vitro. This may have implications on spore viability, thereby impacting CDI recurrence and transmission rates
ReelFramer: Co-creating News Reels on Social Media with Generative AI
Short videos on social media are a prime way many young people find and
consume content. News outlets would like to reach audiences through news reels,
but currently struggle to translate traditional journalistic formats into the
short, entertaining videos that match the style of the platform. There are many
ways to frame a reel-style narrative around a news story, and selecting one is
a challenge. Different news stories call for different framings, and require a
different trade-off between entertainment and information. We present a system
called ReelFramer that uses text and image generation to help journalists
explore multiple narrative framings for a story, then generate scripts,
character boards and storyboards they can edit and iterate on. A user study of
five graduate students in journalism-related fields found the system greatly
eased the burden of transforming a written story into a reel, and that
exploring framings to find the right one was a rewarding process
A hidden crisis: strengthening the evidence base on the sustainability of rural groundwater supplies: results from a pilot study in Uganda
Extending and sustaining access to rural water supplies remains central to improving the health and
livelihoods of poor people, particularly women, in Africa, where 400 million rural inhabitants have no
form of utility provided water, and universal access to water hinges on accelerated development of
groundwater (UN 2013). The âfuture proofingâ of groundwater investments is therefore vital,
especially in the context of global and local trends including demographic shifts, environmental
impacts of human activity and climate change (Taylor et al. 2013).
The emphasis, in recent years, on accelerating access to new infrastructure has obscured a hidden
crisis of failure. More than 30% of sources are nonâfunctional within a few years of construction
(Rietveld et al. 2009, RWSN 2009, Lockwood et al. 2011) and a greater number are seasonal (for
example 50% in Sierra Leone) (MoEWR 2012). The accumulated costs to governments, donors, and,
above all, rural people, are enormous. The original benefits generated by the new infrastructure â
improved health, nutrition, time savings, education, particularly for the poorest â are lost if
improved services cannot be sustained. The cumulative effect of rural water supply failure in Africa
over the past 20 years has been estimated by the World Bank to represent a lost investment in
excess of $1.2 billion.
Critically, there is limited data or analysis on why sources are nonâfunctional and therefore little
opportunity to learn from past mistakes.
This report provides a summary of the work undertaken by the UKâfunded UPGro research
programme ('Unlocking the Potential for Groundwater for the Poor') for subâSaharan Africa (SSA)
funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the Economic and Social Research
Council (ESRC) and the Department for International Development (DfID). The Catalyst Grant project
âA Hidden Crisisâ was aimed at developing a methodology and toolbox to investigate the causes of
failure in groundwaterâbased water services in SSA, which could form the foundation for more
substantial and largerâscale research in the future to develop a statistically significant evidence base
to examine water point functionality and the underlying causes of failure across a range of physical,
social, institutional and governance environments in SSA. To test the toolbox and methodology
developed, a pilot study was conducted in northeast Uganda
Overall, the approach and methods developed in the catalyst project have been shown to make a
significant step towards developing a replicable and robust methodology which can be used to
generate a systematic evidence base for supply failure. The work has gone a significant way to
encapsulating the complexity of the interlinked aspects of the problem, balancing the natural science
and engineering (âtechnicalâ) aspects of the research with those concerning the ability of
communities to manage and maintain their water points (the âsocialâ aspects). The multiplicity of
interlinked causes of water point failure was explicitly acknowledged and taken into account through
the use of multiâdisciplinary field and analytical methods within the toolbox and in selection of the
research team. The multiâdisciplinary methods of investigation used were highly practical and
appropriate to the information sought, and based on detailed observational science
On the possibility of magneto-structural correlations: detailed studies of di-nickel carboxylate complexes
A series of water-bridged dinickel complexes of the general formula [Ni<sub>2</sub>(Ό<sub>2</sub>-OH<sub>2</sub>)(Ό2-
O<sub>2</sub>C<sup>t</sup>Bu)<sub>2</sub>(O<sub>2</sub>C<sup>t</sup>Bu)2(L)(L0)] (L = HO<sub>2</sub>C<sup>t</sup>Bu, L0 = HO<sub>2</sub>C<sup>t</sup>Bu (1), pyridine (2),
3-methylpyridine (4); L = L0 = pyridine (3), 3-methylpyridine (5)) has been synthesized
and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The magnetic properties
have been probed by magnetometry and EPR spectroscopy, and detailed measurements
show that the axial zero-field splitting, D, of the nickel(ii) ions is on the same order as
the isotropic exchange interaction, J, between the nickel sites. The isotropic exchange
interaction can be related to the angle between the nickel centers and the bridging
water molecule, while the magnitude of D can be related to the coordination sphere at
the nickel sites
A hidden crisis: strengthening the evidence base on the current failure of rural groundwater supplies
New ambitious international goals for universal access to safe drinking water depend critically on the ability of development partners to accelerate and sustain access to groundwater. However, available evidence (albeit fragmented and methodologically unclear) indicates >30% of new groundwater-based supplies are non-functional within a few years of construction. Critically, in the absence of a significant systematic evidence base or analysis on supply failures, there is little opportunity to learn from past mistakes, to ensure more sustainable services can be developed in the future. This work presents a new and robust methodology for investigating the causes of non-functionality, developed by an interdisciplinary team as part of a UK-funded development research project. The approach was successfully piloted within a test study in NE Uganda, and forms a basis for future research to develop a statistically significant systematic evidence base to unravel the underlying causes of failur
Trouble at the top: The construction of a tenant identity in the governance of social housing organizations
The project of citizen governance has transformed the social housing sector in England where 20,000 tenants now sit as directors on the boards of housing associations, but the entrance of social housing tenants to the boardroom has aroused opposition from the chief executives of housing companies and triggered regulatory intervention from government inspectors. This paper investigates the cause of these tensions through a theoretical framework drawn from the work of feminist philosopher Judith Butler. It interprets housing governance as an identificatory project with the power to constitute tenant directors as regulated subjects, and presents evidence to suggest that this project of identity fails to completely enclose its subject, allowing tenant directors to engage in âidentity workâ that threatens the supposed unity of the board. The paper charts the development of antagonism and political tension in the board rooms of housing companies to present an innovative account of the construction and contestation of identities in housing governance
Eutectic Colony Formation: A Stability Analysis
Experiments have widely shown that a steady-state lamellar eutectic
solidification front is destabilized on a scale much larger than the lamellar
spacing by the rejection of a dilute ternary impurity and forms two-phase cells
commonly referred to as `eutectic colonies'. We extend the stability analysis
of Datye and Langer for a binary eutectic to include the effect of a ternary
impurity. We find that the expressions for the critical onset velocity and
morphological instability wavelength are analogous to those for the classic
Mullins-Sekerka instability of a monophase planar interface, albeit with an
effective surface tension that depends on the geometry of the lamellar
interface and, non-trivially, on interlamellar diffusion. A qualitatively new
aspect of this instability is the occurence of oscillatory modes due to the
interplay between the destabilizing effect of the ternary impurity and the
dynamical feedback of the local change in lamellar spacing on the front motion.
In a transient regime, these modes lead to the formation of large scale
oscillatory microstructures for which there is recent experimental evidence in
a transparent organic system. Moreover, it is shown that the eutectic front
dynamics on a scale larger than the lamellar spacing can be formulated as an
effective monophase interface free boundary problem with a modified
Gibbs-Thomson condition that is coupled to a slow evolution equation for the
lamellar spacing. This formulation provides additional physical insights into
the nature of the instability and a simple means to calculate an approximate
stability spectrum. Finally, we investigate the influence of the ternary
impurity on a short wavelength oscillatory instability that is already present
