Patterns and drivers of movement for a coastal benthopelagic fish, Pseudocaranx georgianus, on Australia's southeast coast.

Knowledge of connectivity and population structure is integral to the sustainable management of fished populations, yet such information is unavailable for many species over scales relevant to their exploitation. We examined broad-scale patterns and drivers of adult movement for a putatively mobile carangid (Pseudocaranx georgianus) on Australia's southeast coast using an angler tag-recapture dataset. More than 6300 individuals were tagged and released across 1007 km of coastline, with anglers recapturing 157 (2.48%) individuals during a 14-year period. Median distance moved was 5 km and a substantial proportion of individuals (19%) were recaptured at their release location. Recapture latitude was also strongly predicted by release latitude (r2 = 0.87). However, a broad range of movements were observed (0-508 km), with 6% of individuals moving further than 100 km. Most individuals recaptured in areas now designated as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) were originally released in the same area (79.2%). Larger body size, longer periods at liberty, and releases during Spring all positively influenced distance moved. Results support restricted movement over an intermediate scale, punctuated by occasional large movements. Our findings suggest adult movement of P. georgianus in southeastern Australia primarily occurs over smaller distances than the current spatial scale of management

Modelling Wind Turbine Wakes at Middelgrunden Wind Farm

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from the publisher via the URL in this record. As part of the development of an offshore wind farm layout optimisation tool, this paper explores the accuracy and computational time of wake models applied to Middelgrunden Wind Farm outside of Copenhagen, Denmark. In this study, four years of data from 2001 to 2004 are used to test the applicability, accuracy, and computational time of the Jensen, Larsen, Ishihara, and a simplified version of the Ainslie Eddy-Viscosity wake models. This study has shown that the size of the directional sector used in the comparison and if that directional sector is applied to all turbines’ incoming wind velocities or just the northernmost greatly affects the results. From this it is found that the Larsen wake model provides the best balance between accuracy and computational time. It also shows that even a simplified version of a field model takes significantly longer to compute than an analytic model. This study has also shown that using directional sectors of ±15◦ these models perform similarly to previous studies at Nysted and Horns Rev indicating that the close spacing (2.4D) at Middelgrunden is not too close for the use of these models

Good Banks and Bad Banks, Centralised Banks and Local Banks and Economic Growth

The on-going banking crisis has demonstrated the significance of banking for economic growth. While banks as creators of money are important for the functioning of the economy, bank lending to productive enterprises is necessary for economic activity. Much of the international policy discussion supports the notion of reform of banking structure to allow banks to perform these two functions more effectively. On the one hand there is a discussion of separating traditional banking functions from those which exposed the system to excessive risk, i.e. separating ‘good' banking from ‘bad' banking. At the same time there has been discussion of the relative merits of large-scale banking concentrated in financial centres and smaller-scale local banking

Hydrothermally Emplaced, Lower Mississippian, Tripolitic Chert and Its Possible Relationship to the Tri-State Lead-Zinc Mining District

Across the southern Ozark Region, northern Arkansas, southwestern Missouri, and northeastern Oklahoma, exposures of the Lower Mississippian Boone Formation and its equivalents exhibit well-developed tripolitic chert that has been mined, more or less continuously, for at least 80 years. The tripolitic chert is a replacement of an interval within the basal portion of the upper Boone Formation in Arkansas and Oklahoma, and equivalent to the Elsey Formation in Missouri. The movement of silica-rich, hydrothermal fluids appears to have been much like that of a confined aquifer. It followed the basal upper Boone Formation (Arkansas) = Elsey Formation (Missouri) and was bound below by an impermeable interval at the top of the lower Boone Formation (Arkansas) = Reeds Spring Formation (Missouri), and above by the base of the upper Boone Formation (Arkansas) = Burlington-Keokuk (Missouri). The first hydrothermal event incompletely silicified the basal upper Boone = Elsey Formation. After leaching of the remnant carbonate, thus forming the tripolitic chert, a second hydrothermal event deposited terminated and doubly terminated quartz crystals, and druse in the tripolitic chert voids. This hydrothermal event may have pro-duced the Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) lead-zinc deposits in northeast Oklahoma and southwestern Missouri. The famous deposits at Picher, Oklahoma, and Joplin, Missouri, appear to be positioned in the apparent path of the hydrothermal fluid migration. While timing of these hydrothermal events is unclear, they may reflect lateral secretion produced by the Ouachita Orogeny in the Late Pennsylvanian

Greening the Grassroots: Rethinking African Conserva-tion Funding

    Get PDF
The purpose of this report is to document these issues around existing funding practices in the conservation field in Africa, focusing on both challenges and emerging solutions. Through collecting feedback and insights from both African civil society organizations (CSOs) and funders, the report seeks to shed light on the key barriers and challenges that both groups face and to develop recommendations for ways to improve funding practices. The report thus provides greater empirical evidence for getting more and better funding into local hands at the point of impact
