    Label information and consumer behaviour: evidence on drinking milk sector

    AbstractThe purpose of the research is to evaluate the impact of different kinds of information disclosures of milk labels, investigating the interest among consumers based on their consumption behaviours and characteristics. In this research, all the actions which lead to a healthiness, become expressions of a production process, among which consumers' food choices, purchase, preparation, and also self-production. Therefore, in the "health creation" production process, information and knowledge about food become "investments". In this context, label disclosures become a tangible expression of this kind of "investment". The research question is: what impact do purchase preferences and consumers' characteristics have on their interest towards the label information provided? Several information disclosures, both mandatory and voluntary, are investigated. Therefore, some choice attributes will be analysed as indicators of the consumer's behaviour in relation to his investment in food information. The methodology used for the analysis is an Ordered Logit. The analysis of the consumer's behaviour has been performed by transposing MĂ©nard's analysis of firm corporate governance (MĂ©nard, Agribus. 34:142–160, 2018) to the consumer as producer of welfare equity. The reduction of information asymmetry is a cost for the producer, and this research may be able to measure how much it would be convenient to invest in this reduction, based on the analysis of the consumer's behaviour toward his personal investment in food information acquisition

    The purpose of the research is to evaluate the brand extension strategy of SMEs food companies, through the analysis of the consumers' response. The research analysed the case study of a food processing cooperative, “Gruppo Grifo Agroalimentare”, which diversified its production through the acquisition of new SMEs companies. Through an hypothetical brand extension of the products, the goal is to study which factors would affect the acceptance and the purchasing of the extension. The results drive allow the SMEs food companies to know the needs of new consumers and to be able to meet these needs, both in terms of distribution and in terms of offer

    Event delimitation in Mandarin: The case of diminishing reduplication

    Mandarin verbal reduplication is generally regarded as a phenomenon conveying an aspectual value since it temporally bounds the event expressed by the base verb, thus resulting in a (counter-iconic) ‘diminishing’ semantics. In this paper, we put forward a novel syntactic account of diminishing reduplication in Mandarin, which derives the aspectual semantic properties of these constructs from the syntax of their event structure. In particular, we outline an analysis of reduplication as the spell out of two copies of the same lexical item, whereby the reduplicant is the lower copy sitting as the complement of the verbal head (higher copy), and displaying the distributional and interpretive properties of ‘weak’ verbal classifiers. Focusing on the status of the reduplicant, we present distributional, interpretive and diachronic evidence in support of our analysis

    Angiogenesis is a key event in the natural progression of gliomas. Nestin, a marker for multipotential neuroepithelial stem cells, is detected in neuroepithelial tumors and in proliferating endothelial cells (ECs) and is involved in the early stages of lineage commitment, proliferation and differentiation. Nestin expression is correlated with proangiogenic chemokines (CXCL12 and its receptor CXCR4) and growth factors (VEGF, PDGF-B and its receptor PDGFRbeta). VEGF expression upregulates CXCR4 on endothelial cells, binding the chemokine SDF1/CXCL12 (Stromal Derived Factor) that has a role on angiogenesis and chemotaxis of endothelial cells; PDGF (platelet-derived growth factor) and PDGFRbeta are also crucial by increasing the expression of VEGF. We performed a retrospective study on the presence and role of nestin-expressing cells in 102 patients with glioma, relating the findings to VEGF, CXCL12, PDGFRbeta expression and to clinical outcome (time to tumor progression-TTP and survival time-ST). Our results suggest that in gliomas the detection of proliferating ECs expressing nestin correlates to histological malignancy grade and clinical outcome. Also, the expression of CXCL12 in low-grade gliomas was the only factor associated with a significantly shorter TTP, suggesting a role of this chemokine in angiogenic shift and/or disease progression

    Enhancing the Sustainability of Social Housing Policies through the Social Impact Approach: Innovative Perspectives form a “Paris Affordable Housing Challenge” Project in France

    The environmental, economic and social challenges re-launched in the European Union Agendas (e.g., Horizon 2020 and Europe 2020–2030) have recently returned to being highly debated. In particular, policies and interventions in the field of social housing (SH) are still remaining crucial issues for urban regeneration. These interventions are aimed to combine sustainability criteria with architectural, urban and environmental quality. In this context, our goal in this article is to provide an innovative perspective on the topic highlighting the positive returns enabled by the logic of the social impact approach (SIA). A pilot project is proposed to be performed in the VI arrondissement of Paris. Starting from the French regulatory context and the requirements set by the “Paris Affordable Housing Challenge” competition, the levers of social finance for new social demands and the levers of incentives are applied to a real case. The research results show that the application of the emerging principles of social impact investing (SII) in areas difficult to access in the private market had positive returns. The final aim of the article is to outline guidelines that consider the quality, management and generation of the social impact requirements highlighted in the proposal to facilitate the application of the SIA to other interventions and contexts

    Advanced-Metastatic Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer EGFR-mutated in Italy: patient management costs and potential productivity losses:

    Epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) are established therapies for previously untreated advanced/metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) EGFR-mutated patients. Osimertinib, a third-generation TKI, has recently received the same first-line indication. This study aims at investigating management costs and potential productivity losses in Italy in this patient setting, given all the available therapeutic options. Two analyses were performed. The first evaluates first-line yearly management costs and potential productivity losses per patient, for each first-line treatment. The second, performed nationally and regionally, models all lines of treatments and costs over a five-year period, through different market-share scenarios – considering osimertinib adoption as new therapy in 60% of patients as the most probable one – and line-switch/mortality probabilities. Using this model, patients' total months of treatment and development/progression of brain metastases were also analyzed. The first analysis shows that first-line management costs and potential productivity losses are minimized by osimertinib (first-line yearly expenditure of €25.942, 8%-12% less than TKIs). The second analysis, based on a five-year horizon and on all therapy lines, shows that total management costs and potential productivity losses decrease by increasing the adoption of osimertinib as a first-line therapy (€7.4m cumulative lower cost with osimertinib at 60% compared to 0%). Considering the average month of therapy, where results are not affected by the length of the therapy, with osimertinib at 60% on naïve patients, monthly management costs and productivity losses are 10% lower than in the non-osimertinib scenario. In advanced, metastatic EGFR-mutated NSCLC, the use of osimertinib as the first-line treatment could reduce patient management costs and potential productivity losses

    Integrated chemical status of the Italian marine waters sensu Descriptor 8 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive

    The European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) required Member States to define the concept of Good Environmental Status (GES) of their marine waters in quantitative terms and to achieve it through the assessment of 11 descriptors by 2020. ISPRA (Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research), on behalf of the Ministry of the Environment, carried out the Initial Assessment (2012) and the evaluation of the first cycle of the MSFD (2012–2018) to understand the achievement of GES Descriptor 8 (“Contaminant concentrations are at levels that do not give rise to pollution effects”) and, now, in this second cycle of the MSFD (2018–2024), is conducting monitoring of D8C1 criterion elements (“Contaminant concentrations”). In this paper, the approach, integrating data on chemical contaminants (metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorine compounds) in different matrices (water, sediment and biota), adopted by Italy since 2012 to study GES for the MSFD-D8C1 criterion in national marine water is described. This approach, based on the use of a dimensionless, zero-centered index, allows one to assess all regulatory contaminants as a whole. The improvements in the monitoring strategy and the GES evaluation between the Initial Assessment, the first cycle, and the beginning of the second cycle of the MSFD for the Adriatic Sea subregion are presented

The precise timing of initiation of DNA replication is determined by a regulatory circuit that depends on the binding of a critical number of ATP-bound DnaA proteins at the origin of replication, resulting in the melting of the DNA and the assembly of the replication complex. The synthesis of DnaA in the cell is controlled by a growth-rate dependent, negatively autoregulated gene found near the origin of replication. Both the regulatory and initiation activity of DnaA depend on its nucleotide bound state and its availability. RESULTS: In order to investigate the contributions of the different regulatory processes to the timing of initiation of DNA replication at varying growth rates, we formulate a minimal quantitative model of the initiator circuit that includes the key ingredients known to regulate the activity of the DnaA protein. This model describes the average-cell oscillations in DnaA-ATP/DNA during the cell cycle, for varying growth rates. We evaluate the conditions under which this ratio attains the same threshold value at the time of initiation, independently of the growth rate. CONCLUSIONS: We find that a quantitative description of replication initiation by DnaA must rely on the dependency of the basic parameters on growth rate, in order to account for the timing of initiation of DNA replication at different cell doubling times. We isolate two main possible scenarios for this, depending on the roles of DnaA autoregulation and DnaA ATP-hydrolysis regulatory process. One possibility is that the basal rate of regulatory inactivation by ATP hydrolysis must vary with growth rate. Alternatively, some parameters defining promoter activity need to be a function of the growth rate. In either case, the basal rate of gene expression needs to increase with the growth rate, in accordance with the known characteristics of the dnaA promoter. Furthermore, both inactivation and autorepression reduce the amplitude of the cell-cycle oscillations of DnaA-ATP/DNA.Peer Reviewe

    Chim3 confers survival advantage to CD4+ T cells upon HIV-1 infection by preventing HIV-1 DNA integration and HIV-1–induced G2 cell-cycle delay

    AbstractThe long-term expression and the ability of a therapeutic gene to confer survival advantage to transduced cells are mandatory requirements for successful anti-HIV gene therapy. In this context, we developed lentiviral vectors (LVs) expressing the F12–viral infectivity factor (Vif) derivative Chim3. We recently showed that Chim3 inhibits HIV-1 replication in primary cells by both blocking the accumulation of retrotranscripts, independently of either human APOBEC3G (hA3G) or Vif, and by preserving the antiviral function of hA3G. These results were predictive of long-lasting survival of Chim3+ cells after HIV-1 infection. Furthermore, Vif, like Vpr, deregulates cell-cycle progression by inducing a delay in G2 phase. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of Chim3 on both cell survival and cell-cycle regulation after HIV-1 infection. Here, we provide evidence that infected Chim3+ T cells prevail over either mock- or empty-LV engineered cells, show reduced G2 accumulation, and, as a consequence, ultimately extend their lifespan. Based on these findings, Chim3 rightly belongs to the most efficacious class of antiviral genes. In conclusion, Chim3 usage in anti-HIV gene therapy based on hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) modification has to be considered as a promising therapeutic intervention to eventually cope with HIV-1 infection

    Verbal reduplication in Sinitic

    The main aim of this paper is to underpin the connection between the semantic relationship binding the constituents of verbs and the formal and semantic properties of their reduplication in Sinitic. We first discuss in detail verbal and adjectival reduplication in Standard Mandarin, the best described Chinese language; we also collected data on adjectives, in order to compare them to verbs. Then, we analyze data from a convenience sample of twelve Chinese \u2018dialects\u2019, representing the eight major groups of Sinitic, comparing them to Mandarin. We show that whereas the ABAB reduplication pattern often has a (counter-iconic) diminishing meaning and appears as close(r) to syntax, being also sensitive to the aspectual properties of the base, the AABB pattern always has an increasing function, regardless of the word class of the base, and it is a phenomenon conditioned by morphological factors, being sensitive to the relation holding between the constituents of the base verb
