Dynamic spin-lattice coupling and nematic fluctuations in NaFeAs
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study acoustic phonons and spin
excitations in single crystals of NaFeAs, a parent compound of iron pnictide
superconductors. NaFeAs exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural
transition at K and a collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order at
K. While longitudinal and out-of-plane transverse acoustic
phonons behave as expected, the in-plane transverse acoustic phonons reveal
considerable softening on cooling to , and then harden on approaching
before saturating below . In addition, we find that spin-spin
correlation lengths of low-energy magnetic excitations within the FeAs layer
and along the -axis increase dramatically below , and show weak anomaly
across . These results suggest that the electronic nematic phase present
in the paramagnetic tetragonal phase is closely associated with dynamic
spin-lattice coupling, possibly arising from the one-phonon-two-magnon
mechanism
Magnetic moment evolution and spin freezing in doped BaFe 2 As 2
Fe-K β X-ray emission spectroscopy measurements reveal an asymmetric doping dependence of the magnetic moments μbare in electron- and hole-doped BaFe2As2. At low temperature, μbare is nearly constant in hole-doped samples, whereas it decreases upon electron doping. Increasing temperature substantially enhances μbare in the hole-doped region, which is naturally explained by the theoretically predicted crossover into a spin-frozen state. Our measurements demonstrate the importance of Hund’s-coupling and electronic correlations, especially for hole-doped BaFe2As2, and the inadequacy of a fully localized or fully itinerant description of the 122 family of Fe pnictides
I4U Submission to NIST SRE 2018: Leveraging from a Decade of Shared Experiences
The I4U consortium was established to facilitate a joint entry to NIST
speaker recognition evaluations (SRE). The latest edition of such joint
submission was in SRE 2018, in which the I4U submission was among the
best-performing systems. SRE'18 also marks the 10-year anniversary of I4U
consortium into NIST SRE series of evaluation. The primary objective of the
current paper is to summarize the results and lessons learned based on the
twelve sub-systems and their fusion submitted to SRE'18. It is also our
intention to present a shared view on the advancements, progresses, and major
paradigm shifts that we have witnessed as an SRE participant in the past decade
from SRE'08 to SRE'18. In this regard, we have seen, among others, a paradigm
shift from supervector representation to deep speaker embedding, and a switch
of research challenge from channel compensation to domain adaptation.Comment: 5 page
Image Compression for Machine and Human Vision with Spatial-Frequency Adaptation
Image compression for machine and human vision (ICMH) has gained increasing
attention in recent years. Existing ICMH methods are limited by high training
and storage overheads due to heavy design of task-specific networks. To address
this issue, in this paper, we develop a novel lightweight adapter-based tuning
framework for ICMH, named Adapt-ICMH, that better balances task performance and
bitrates with reduced overheads. We propose a spatial-frequency modulation
adapter (SFMA) that simultaneously eliminates non-semantic redundancy with a
spatial modulation adapter, and enhances task-relevant frequency components and
suppresses task-irrelevant frequency components with a frequency modulation
adapter. The proposed adapter is plug-and-play and compatible with almost all
existing learned image compression models without compromising the performance
of pre-trained models. Experiments demonstrate that Adapt-ICMH consistently
outperforms existing ICMH frameworks on various machine vision tasks with fewer
fine-tuned parameters and reduced computational complexity. Code will be
released at https://github.com/qingshi9974/ECCV2024-AdpatICMH .Comment: Accepted by ECCV2024, project:

ChineseWebText: Large-scale High-quality Chinese Web Text Extracted with Effective Evaluation Model
During the development of large language models (LLMs), the scale and quality
of the pre-training data play a crucial role in shaping LLMs' capabilities. To
accelerate the research of LLMs, several large-scale datasets, such as C4 [1],
Pile [2], RefinedWeb [3] and WanJuan [4], have been released to the public.
However, most of the released corpus focus mainly on English, and there is
still lack of complete tool-chain for extracting clean texts from web data.
Furthermore, fine-grained information of the corpus, e.g. the quality of each
text, is missing. To address these challenges, we propose in this paper a new
complete tool-chain EvalWeb to extract Chinese clean texts from noisy web data.
First, similar to previous work, manually crafted rules are employed to discard
explicit noisy texts from the raw crawled web contents. Second, a well-designed
evaluation model is leveraged to assess the remaining relatively clean data,
and each text is assigned a specific quality score. Finally, we can easily
utilize an appropriate threshold to select the high-quality pre-training data
for Chinese. Using our proposed approach, we release the largest and latest
large-scale high-quality Chinese web text ChineseWebText, which consists of
1.42 TB and each text is associated with a quality score, facilitating the LLM
researchers to choose the data according to the desired quality thresholds. We
also release a much cleaner subset of 600 GB Chinese data with the quality
exceeding 90%
Effect of HAP decomposition on the corrosion behavior of Ti-HAP biocomposites
Ti-HAP biocomposites are gained attention for combining the attractive properties of Ti and hydroxyapatite (HAP). However, the decomposition of HAP at elevated processing temperatures is a major concern since it can lead to structural flaws and may deteriorate the corrosion resistance of Ti. The present study aims to investigate the corrosion behavior of Ti-HAP composite processed by powder metallurgy by performing potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 0.9wt% NaCl solution at body temperature. Results show that the presence of Ti lowers the HAP decomposition temperatures resulting in the formation of HAP-depleted zones acting as electrochemically active sites, decreasing the corrosion resistance. This study was supported by the Foundation for Science andTechnology (FCT), Portugal with the reference projects UID/EEA/04436/2013, EXCL/EMS-TEC/0460/2012, and M-ERA-NET/0001/2015, as well, by FEDER funds through the COMPETE 2020–Programa Operacional Competitividade eInternacionalização (POCI) with the reference project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006941. PgtE Enzyme of Salmonella enterica Shares the Similar Biological Roles to Plasminogen Activator (Pla) in Interacting With DEC-205 (CD205), and Enhancing Host Dissemination and Infectivity by Yersinia pestis
Yersinia pestis, the cause of plague, is a newly evolved Gram-negative bacterium. Through the acquisition of the plasminogen activator (Pla), Y. pestis gained the means to rapidly disseminate throughout its mammalian hosts. It was suggested that Y. pestis utilizes Pla to interact with the DEC-205 (CD205) receptor on antigen-presenting cells (APCs) to initiate host dissemination and infection. However, the evolutionary origin of Pla has not been fully elucidated. The PgtE enzyme of Salmonella enterica, involved in host dissemination, shows sequence similarity with the Y. pestis Pla. In this study, we demonstrated that both Escherichia coli K-12 and Y. pestis bacteria expressing the PgtE-protein were able to interact with primary alveolar macrophages and DEC-205-transfected CHO cells. The interaction between PgtE-expressing bacteria and DEC-205-expressing transfectants could be inhibited by the application of an anti-DEC-205 antibody. Moreover, PgtE-expressing Y. pestis partially re-gained the ability to promote host dissemination and infection. In conclusion, the DEC-205-PgtE interaction plays a role in promoting the dissemination and infection of Y. pestis, suggesting that Pla and the PgtE of S. enterica might share a common evolutionary origin.Peer reviewe
