Investigating worn surfaces of nanoscale TiAlN/VN multilayer coating using FIB and TEM
TiAlN/VN multilayer coatings exhibit excellent dry sliding wear resistance and low friction coefficient, believed to be associated with the formation of tribo-films comprising Magnéli phases such as V2O5. In order to investigate this hypothesis, dry sliding wear of TiAlN/VN coatings was undertaken against Al2O3. Focused ion beam was used to generate site-specific TEM specimens. A thin (2-20nm) tribo-film was observed at the worn surface, with occasional 'roll-like' wear debris (φ 5-40nm). Both were amorphous and contained the same Ti, Al and V ratio as the coating, but with the nitrogen largely replaced by oxygen. No evidence of Magnéli phases was found. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd
Evaluation of the Diurnal Cycle in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer Over Land as Represented by a Variety of Single-Column Models: The Second GABLS Experiment
We present the main results from the second model intercomparison within the GEWEX (Global Energy andWater cycle EXperiment) Atmospheric Boundary Layer Study (GABLS). The target is to examine the diurnal cycle over land in today’s numerical weather prediction and climate models for operational and research purposes. The set-up of the case is based on observations taken during the Cooperative Atmosphere-Surface Exchange Study-1999 (CASES-99), which was held in Kansas, USA in the early autumn with a strong diurnal cycle with no clouds present. The models are forced with a constant geostrophic wind, prescribed surface temperature and large-scale divergence. Results from 30 different model simulations and one large-eddy simulation (LES) are analyzed and compared with observations. Even though the surface temperature is prescribed, the models give variable near-surface air temperatures. This, in turn, gives rise to differences in low-level stability affecting the turbulence and the turbulent heat fluxes. The increase in modelled upward sensible heat flux during the morning transition is typically too weak and the growth of the convective boundary layer before noon is too slow. This is related to weak modelled nearsurface winds during the morning hours. The agreement between the models, the LES and observations is the best during the late afternoon. From this intercomparison study, we find that modelling the diurnal cycle is still a big challenge. For the convective part of the diurnal cycle, some of the first-order schemes perform somewhat better while the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) schemes tend to be slightly better during nighttime conditions. Nonperturbative Description of Deep Inelastic Structure Functions in Light-Front QCD
We explore the deep inelastic structure functions of hadrons
nonperturbatively in an inverse power expansion of the light-front energy of
the probe in the framework of light-front QCD. We arrive at the general
expressions for various structure functions as the Fourier transform of matrix
elements of different components of bilocal vector and axial vector currents on
the light-front in a straightforward manner. The complexities of the structure
functions are mainly carried by the multi-parton wave functions of the hadrons,
while, the bilocal currents have a dynamically dependent yet simple structure
on the light-front in this description. We also present a novel analysis of the
power corrections based on light-front power counting which resolves some
ambiguities of the conventional twist analysis in deep inelastic processes.
Further, the factorization theorem and the scale evolution of the structure
functions are presented in this formalism by using old-fashioned light-front
time-ordered perturbation theory with multi-parton wave functions.
Nonperturbative QCD dynamics underlying the structure functions can be explored
in the same framework. Once the nonperturbative multi-parton wave functions are
known from low-energy light-front QCD, a complete description of deep inelastic

Comparison of Emergency Medical Services Delivery Performance using Maximal Covering Location and Gradual Cover Location Problems
Ambulance location is one of the critical factors that determine the efficiency of emergency medical services delivery. Maximal Covering Location Problem is one of the widely used ambulance location models. However, its coverage function is considered unrealistic because of its ability to abruptly change from fully covered to uncovered. On the contrary, Gradual Cover Location Problem coverage is considered more realistic compared to Maximal Cover Location Problem because the coverage decreases over distance. This paper examines the delivery of Emergency Medical Services under the models of Maximal Covering Location Problem and Gradual Cover Location Problem. The results show that the latter model is superior, especially when the Maximal Covering Location Problem has been deemed fully covered
First and second variation formulae for the sub-Riemannian area in three-dimensional pseudo-hermitian manifolds
We calculate the first and the second variation formula for the
sub-Riemannian area in three dimensional pseudo-hermitian manifolds. We
consider general variations that can move the singular set of a C^2 surface and
non-singular variation for C_H^2 surfaces. These formulas enable us to
construct a stability operator for non-singular C^2 surfaces and another one
for C2 (eventually singular) surfaces. Then we can obtain a necessary condition
for the stability of a non-singular surface in a pseudo-hermitian 3-manifold in
term of the pseudo-hermitian torsion and the Webster scalar curvature. Finally

Probing Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter with Neutrino Telescopes
In models in which all of the Standard Model fields live in extra universal
dimensions, the lightest Kaluza-Klein (KK) particle can be stable. Calculations
of the one-loop radiative corrections to the masses of the KK modes suggest
that the identity of the lightest KK particle (LKP) is mostly the first KK
excitation of the hypercharge gauge boson. This LKP is a viable dark matter
candidate with an ideal present-day relic abundance if its mass is moderately
large, between 600 to 1200 GeV. Such weakly interacting dark matter particles
are expected to become gravitationally trapped in large bodies, such as the
Sun, and annihilate into neutrinos or other particles that decay into
neutrinos. We calculate the annihilation rate, neutrino flux and the resulting
event rate in present and future neutrino telescopes. The relatively large mass
implies that the neutrino energy spectrum is expected to be well above the
energy threshold of AMANDA and IceCube. We find that the event rate in IceCube

Improved interchangeability with different corneal specular microscopes for quantitative endothelial cell analysis
Introduction: During our clinical practice and research, we encountered an interchangeability problem when using the SP-2000P and SP-3000P TopCon corneal specular microscopes (CSMs) (TopCon Medical Systems, Tokyo, Japan) regarding the endothelial cell count (ECC). We describe a method to improve interchangeability between these CSMs. Methods: Five consecutive good-quality endothelial cell photographs were obtained in 22 eyes of 11 subjects. An ECC comparison between the two CSMs was performed after (I) gauging and calibration by the manufacturer, (II) adjustment of the magnification, (III) correction after external horizontal and vertical calibration. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the ECC of the SP-2000P and SP-3000P at the start. The SP-2000P counted an average of 500 cells/mm2 more than the SP-3000P (p=0.00). After correction for magnification and determining a correction factor based on external calibration, the difference between the ECC of the SP-2000P and the SP-3000P was then found to be 0.4 cells/mm2 and was not statistically significant (p=0.98). Discussion: We propose a method for improving interchangeability, which involves checking magnification settings, re-checking magnification calibration with external calibration devices, and then calculating correction factors. This method can be applied to various specular or confocal microscopes and their associated endothelial cell analysis software packages to be able to keep performing precise endothelial cell counts and to enable comparison of ECCs when a CSM needs to be replaced or when results from different microscopes need to be compared
