    Automated Wind Turbine Pitch Fault Prognosis using ANFIS

    Many current wind turbine (WT) studies focus on improving their reliability and reducing the cost of energy, particularly when WTs are operated offshore. WT Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems contain alarms and signals that provide significant important information. A possible WT fault can be detected through a rigorous analysis of the SCADA data. This paper proposes a new method for analysing WT SCADA data by using Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) with the aim to achieve automated detection of significant pitch faults. Two existing statistical analysis approaches were applied to detect common pitch fault symptoms. Based on the findings, an ANFIS Diagnosis Procedure was proposed and trained. The trained system was then applied in a wind farm containing 26 WTs to show its prognosis ability for pitch faults. The result was compared to a SCADA Alarms approach and the comparison has demonstrated that the ANFIS approach gives prognostic warning of pitch faults ahead of pitch alarms. Finally, a Confusion Matrix analysis was made to show the accuracy of the proposed approach

    Effects of stoichiometry, purity, etching and distilling on resistance of MgB2 pellets and wire segments

    We present a study of the effects of non-stoichiometry, boron purity, wire diameter and post-synthesis treatment (etching and Mg distilling) on the temperature dependent resistance and resistivity of sintered MgB2 pellets and wire segments. Whereas the residual resistivity ratio (RRR) varies between RRR \~ 4 to RRR > 20 for different boron purity, it is only moderately affected by non-stoichiometry (from 20% Mg deficiency to 20% Mg excess) and is apparently independent of wire diameter and presence of Mg metal traces on the wire surface. The obtained set of data indicates that RRR values in excess of 20 and residual resistivities as low as rho{0} ~ 0.4 mu Ohm cm are intrinsic material properties of high purity MgB2

    Resonance properties of a closed rotating rectangular basin subject to space- and time-dependent wind forcing

    We present an idealised process-based model to study the possibly resonant response of closed basins subject to periodic wind forcing. Two solution methods are adopted: a collocation technique (valid for arbitrary rotation) and an analytical expansion (assuming weak rotation). The spectral response, as obtained from our model, displays resonance peaks, which we explain by linking them to the spatial pattern of the wind forcing, the along-wind and cross-wind basin dimensions as well as the influence of rotation. Increasing bottom friction lowers the peaks. Finally, we illustrate how the spectral response is reflected in the time-dependent set-up due to a single wind even

    A scaled fundamental equation is presented for the thermodynamic properties of carbon dioxide in the critical region. The equation is constructed by combining earlier experimental pressure data of Michels and co‐workers with new specific heat data obtained by one of the authors and represents the thermodynamic properties of carbon dioxide in the critical region at temperatures from 301.15 to 323 K and at densities from 290 to 595 kg/m3

    A Universal Vertical Stellar Density Distribution Law for the Galaxy

    We reduced the observational logarithmic space densities in the vertical direction up to 8 kpc from the galactic plane, for stars with absolute magnitudes (5,6], (6,7] and [5,10] in the fields #0952+5245 and SA114, to a single exponential density law. One of three parameters in the quadratic expression of the density law corresponds to the local space density for stars with absolute magnitudes in question. There is no need of any definition for scaleheights or population types. We confirm with the arguments of non-discrete thin and thick discs for our Galaxy and propose a single structure up to several kiloparsecs from the galactic plane. The logarithmic space densities evaluated by this law for the ELAIS field fit to the observational ones. Whereas, there are considerable offsets for the logarithmic space densities produced by two sets of classical galactic model parameters from the observational ones, for the same field.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure and 10 tables, accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc

    Indirect Ultraviolet Detection of Biologically Relevant Organic Acids by Capillary Electrophoresis

    Indirect UV detection of fourteen short-chain organic acids (e.g., oxalic acid, citric acid, malonic acid, tartaric acid, methylmalonic acid, α-ketoglutaric acid, succinic acid, ethylmalonic acid, methylsuccinic acid, glutaric acid, apidic acid, methylglutaric acid, lactic acid and pyruvic acid) by capillary electrophoresis is described. The method used phthalate as the UV-absorbing additive in carbonate buffer and the non-absorbing analytes were detected indirectly at 230 nm. The influences of buffer pH, ionic strenght, concentration of phthalate and organic modifier on indirect signal response and migration behavior of the organic acids were investigated. Comparisons of reproducibility on migration time, limit of detection and separation efficiency among three types of capillary (e.g., polyacrylamide-coated, myristyltrimethylammonium bromide-coated and uncoated capillaries) were conducted. The method developed was applied to detect succinic acid, methylmalonic acid, citric acid, glutaric acid and lactic acid in human body fluids, and preliminary results were provided

    Effects of Boron Purity, Mg Stoichiometry and Carbon Substitution on Properties of Polycrystalline MgB2_{2}

    By synthesizing MgB2_{2} using boron of different nominal purity we found values of the residual resistivity ratio (RRR=R(300K)/R(42K)RRR = R(300 K) / R(42 K)) from 4 to 20, which covers almost all values found in literature. To obtain high values of RRRRRR, high purity reagents are necessary. With the isotopically pure boron we obtained the highest RRRRRR \sim 20 for the stoichiometric compound. We also investigated Mgx_{x}11^{11}B2_{2} samples with 0.8 <x<< x < 1.2. For the range Mg0.8_{0.8}11^{11}B2_{2} up to Mg1.2_{1.2}11^{11}B2_{2} we found average values of RRRRRR between 14 and 24. For smaller variations in stoichiometry (x=1±0.1x=1\pm 0.1) RRR=18±3RRR = 18 \pm 3. All of our data point to the conclusion that high RRRRRR (20\sim 20) and low ρ0\rho_{0} (0.4μΩcm\leq 0.4 \mu \Omega cm) are intrinsic material properties associated with high purity MgB2_{2}. In addition we have performed initial work on optimizing the formation of carbon doped MgB2_{2} via the use of B4_{4}C. Nearly single phase material can be formed by reaction of nominal Mg(B0.8_{0.8}C0.2_{0.2})2_{2} for 24 hours at 1200C1200^{\circ}C. The TcT_{c} for this composition is between 21.9K21.9 K and 22.7K22.7 K (depending on criterion).Comment: accepted to Physica C, special MgB2 issu

    Proteomic analysis of age-related changes in ovine cerebrospinal fluid

    Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulates through the brain and has a unique composition reflecting the biological processes of the brain. Identifying ageing CSF biomarkers can aid in understanding the ageing process and interpreting CSF protein changes in neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, ovine CSF proteins from young (1-2 year old), middle aged (3-6 year old) and old (7-10 year old) sheep were systemically studied. CSF proteins were labelled with iTRAQ tagging reagents and fractionated by 2-dimensional high performance, liquid chromatography. Tryptic peptides were identified using MS/MS fragmentation ions for sequencing and quantified from iTRAQ reporter ion intensities at m/z 114, 115, 116 and 117. Two hundred thirty one peptides were detected, from which 143 proteins were identified. There were 52 proteins with >25% increase in concentrations in the old sheep compared to the young. 33 of them increased >25% but 50% but 1 fold [i.e. haptoglobin (Hp), haemoglobin, neuroendocrine protein 7B2, IgM, fibrous sheath interacting protein 1, vimentin]. There were 18 proteins with >25% decrease in concentrations in the old sheep compared to the young. 17 of them decreased >25% but <50%, and histone deacetylase 7 (HDAC7) was gradually decreased for over 80%. Glutathione S-transferase was decreased in middle aged CSF compared to both young and old CSF. The differential expressions of 3 proteins (Hp, neuroendocrine protein 7B2, IgM) were confirmed by immunoassays. These data expand our current knowledge regarding ovine CSF proteins, supply the necessary information to understand the ageing process in the brain and provide a basis for diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases

    Layer dynamics of a freely standing smectic-A film

    We study the hydrodynamics of a freely-standing smectic-A film in the isothermal, incompressible limit theoretically by analyzing the linearized hydrodynamic equations of motion with proper boundary conditions. The dynamic properties for the system can be obtained from the response functions for the free surfaces. Permeation is included and its importance near the free surfaces is discussed. The hydrodynamic mode structure for the dynamics of the system is compared with that of bulk systems. We show that to describe the dynamic correlation functions for the system, in general, it is necessary to consider the smectic layer displacement uu and the velocity normal to the layers, vzv_z, together. Finally, our analysis also provides a basis for the theoretical study of the off-equilibrium dynamics of freely-standing smectic-A films.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figure
