    We report record error-free data transmission of 40Gb/s over a 1m-long multimode polymer spiral waveguide. The waveguide imposes no significant transmission impairments in the link despite its highly-multimoded nature and long length, demonstrating its potential in high-speed board-level optical interconnections

    The row-column method is a simplification technique used to reducethe complexity of a fully addressed 2-D array. Although itgreatly reduces the number of physical connections required aswell as the amount of data to be handled, it still has limitations; itsimaging data output is sparse, it suffers from speckle noise, and itsspatially-dependant point spread function is riddled with edge artifacts.In this work, we propose a row-column ultrasound imagingsystem, termed CRUIS3D, that uses a 3-D edge-guided randomfield approach to compensate for the limitations of the row-columnmethod. Tests on CRUIS3D and previously published row-columnsystems show the effectiveness of our proposed system as a toolfor enhancing 3-D row-column ultrasound imaging

    A unifying framework for seed sensitivity and its application to subset seeds

    We propose a general approach to compute the seed sensitivity, that can be applied to different definitions of seeds. It treats separately three components of the seed sensitivity problem -- a set of target alignments, an associated probability distribution, and a seed model -- that are specified by distinct finite automata. The approach is then applied to a new concept of subset seeds for which we propose an efficient automaton construction. Experimental results confirm that sensitive subset seeds can be efficiently designed using our approach, and can then be used in similarity search producing better results than ordinary spaced seeds

    Indexing of mid-resolution satellite images with structural attributes

    Satellite image classification has been a major research field for many years with its varied applications in the field of Geography, Geology, Archaeology, Environmental Sciences and Military purposes. Many different techniques have been proposed to classify satellite images with color, shape and texture features. Complex indices like Vegetation index (NDVI), Brightness index (BI) or Urban index (ISU) are used for multi-spectral or hyper-spectral satellite images. In this paper we will show the efficiency of structural features describing man-made objects in mid-resolution satellite images to describe image content. We will then show the state-of-the-art to classify large satellite images with structural features computed from road networks and urban regions extracted on small image patches cut in the large image. Fisher Linear Discriminant (FLD) analysis is used for feature selection and a one-vsrest probabilistic Gaussian kernel Support Vector Machines (SVM) classification method is used to classify the images. The classification probabilities associated with each subimage of the large image provide an estimate of the geographical class coverage

    Mixtures of Bosonic and Fermionic Atoms in Optical Lattices

    We discuss the theory of mixtures of Bosonic and Fermionic atoms in periodic potentials at zero temperature. We derive a general Bose--Fermi Hubbard Hamiltonian in a one--dimensional optical lattice with a superimposed harmonic trapping potential. We study the conditions for linear stability of the mixture and derive a mean field criterion for the onset of a Bosonic superfluid transition. We investigate the ground state properties of the mixture in the Gutzwiller formulation of mean field theory, and present numerical studies of finite systems. The Bosonic and Fermionic density distributions and the onset of quantum phase transitions to demixing and to a Bosonic Mott--insulator are studied as a function of the lattice potential strength. The existence is predicted of a disordered phase for mixtures loaded in very deep lattices. Such a disordered phase possessing many degenerate or quasi--degenerate ground states is related to a breaking of the mirror symmetry in the lattice.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures; added discussions; conclusions and references expande

    Travelling solitons in the parametrically driven nonlinear Schroedinger equation

    We show that the parametrically driven nonlinear Schroedinger equation has wide classes of travelling soliton solutions, some of which are stable.     Effect of electromagnetic fields on the creation of scalar particles in a flat Robertson-Walker space-time

    The influence of electromagnetic fields on the creation of scalar particles from vacuum in a flat Robertson-Walker space-time is studied. The Klein Gordon equation with varying electric field and constant magnetic one is solved. The Bogoliubov transformation method is applied to calculate the pair creation probability and the number density of created particles.
