    Prospects and challenges of big data in construction waste management: A Hong Kong study

    Big Data has shown great potentials in improving management discretion in many areas. However, its applications in construction waste management (CWM) are still in infant stage. This research aims to investigate the prospects and challenges of big data in CWM, by focusing on Hong Kong where a big dataset is made available recently. This study first conducted a comprehensive literature review of big data to understand its definitions, applications, and general challenges of using big data in various sectors. Next, the data collected from Hong Kong government was analyzed to explore the prospects and challenges of Big Data in CWM. Except for the general challenges, big data in CWM has specific challenges mainly due to the specificity of public sectors implementing schemes of CWM. Possible strategies are raised to deal with the challenges so as to embrace the prospects of big data in CWM and relevant domains. This study not only provides government and other sectors in CWM and relevant domains with a clearer understanding of the prospects and challenges of big data that they are facing and corresponding strategies, but also acts as a driving force to stimulate the adoption and proper utilization of big data in sectors involved in CWM.preprin

    Adventitious shoot regeneration from in vitro stem explants of Phellodendron amurense

    An efficient in vitro plant regeneration system from stem explants was established in Phellodendron amurense. Factors influencing shoot regeneration from stems including culture medium type, combinations of plant growth regulators and carbon source in the medium were investigated. Adventitious shoot regeneration was significantly influenced by the type of medium. Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) was the best for promoting shoot regeneration, followed by Gamborg medium (B5) and woody plant medium (WPM). The combination of 6-benzyladenine (BA) and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) produced better results for shoot regeneration. The optimum shoot regeneration frequency (74.5%) and number of shoots per explant (12.3) was achieved using MS medium supplemented with 29.7 M BA and 5.8 M NAA. High concentrations of BA and NAA in the medium inhibited shoot formation. Among the three sugars tested, 20 g dm-3 glucose was the optimum for shoot regeneration. Rooting of regenerated shoots was successful on 1/4-strength MS medium with the addition of 15.4 M IBA. Almost 100% plantlets survived acclimatization after transferred to soil.Key words: Phellodendron amurense, callus, shoot regeneration, stem explants

    Optically pumped ultraviolet lasing from nitride nanopillars at room temperature

    A vertical cavity structure composing of an in situ grown bottom Al x Ga 1-x N/Al y Ga 1-y N distributed Bragg reflector and a top SiO 2 / HfO 2 dielectric mirror for ultraviolet (UV) emission has been demonstrated. Close-packed nanopillars with diameters of around 500 nm have been achieved by the route of nanosphere lithography combined with inductively-coupled plasma etching. Optically-pumped UV lasing at a wavelength of 343.7 nm (3.608 eV) was observed at room temperature, with a threshold excitation density of 0.52 MW/ cm 2. The mechanism of the lasing action is discussed in detail. Our investigation indicates promising possibilities in nitride-based resonant cavity devices, particularly toward realizing the UV nitride-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

    Naming Objects in BIM: A Convention and a Semiautomatic Approach

    A consistent and easily recognizable name is the primary identifier of an object in building information modeling (BIM). Existing naming conventions vary significantly and require extensive manual work that is often tedious and error-prone. This study (1) develops a standardized naming convention for BIM objects and (2) devises a semiautomatic naming approach for saving manual work. In the proposed naming convention, each segment is included by referencing BIM standards with a consideration of BIM users’ actual needs, and the semiautomatic approach is formalized for both completed and ongoing BIM models. Validated by a control experiment and feedback from the project manager and BIM engineers of a real-life project, this research can be immediately applied to realize standardized BIM object names.     Evaluating a web-based social anxiety intervention among community users: Analysis of real-world data

It also currently remains among the most undertreated major mental disorders, due, in part, to socially anxious individuals’ concerns about the stigma and expense of seeking help. The privacy and affordability of computer-aided psychotherapy interventions may render them particularly helpful in addressing these concerns, and they are also highly scalable, but most tend to be only somewhat effective without therapist support. However, a recent evaluation of a new self-guided, 7-module internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy intervention called Overcome Social Anxiety found that it was highly effective. Objective: The initial evaluation of Overcome Social Anxiety revealed that it led to significant reductions in symptom severity among university undergraduates. The aim of this study was to extend the results of the initial study and investigate their generalizability by directly evaluating the intervention’s effectiveness among a general community sample. Methods: While signing up for Overcome Social Anxiety, users consented to the usage of their anonymized outcome data for research purposes. Before and after completing the intervention, users completed the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (FNE), which we employed as the primary outcome measure. Secondary outcome measures included the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) and 2 bespoke questionnaires measuring socially anxious thoughts (Thoughts Questionnaire) and avoidance behaviors (Avoidance Questionnaire). Results: Participants who completed the intervention (102/369, 27.7%) experienced significant reductions in the severity of their symptoms on all measures employed, including FNE (P<.001; Cohen d=1.76), the depression subscale of DASS (P<.001; Cohen d=0.70), the anxiety subscale of DASS (P<.001; Cohen d=0.74), the stress subscale of DASS (P<.001; Cohen d=0.80), the Thoughts Questionnaire (P<.001; Cohen d=1.46), and the Avoidance Questionnaire (P<.001; Cohen d=1.42). Conclusions: Our results provide further evidence that Overcome Social Anxiety reduces the severity of social anxiety symptoms among those who complete it and suggest that its effectiveness extends to the general community. The completion rate is the highest documented for a fully automated intervention for anxiety, depression, or low mood in a real community sample. In addition, our results indicate that Overcome Social Anxiety reduces the severity of symptoms of depression, physiological symptoms of anxiety, and stress in addition to symptoms of social anxiety

    Deletion within the Src homology domain 3 of Bruton's tyrosine kinase resulting in X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA).

    The gene responsible for X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA) has been recently identified to code for a cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase (Bruton's agammaglobulinemia tyrosine kinase, BTK), required for normal B cell development. BTK, like many other cytoplasmic tyrosine kinases, contains Src homology domains (SH2 and SH3), and catalytic kinase domain. SH3 domains are important for the targeting of signaling molecules to specific subcellular locations. We have identified a family with XLA whose affected members have a point mutation (g--&gt;a) at the 5' splice site of intron 8, resulting in the skipping of coding exon 8 and loss of 21 amino acids forming the COOH-terminal portion of the BTK SH3 domain. The study of three generations within this kinship, using restriction fragment length polymorphism and DNA analysis, allowed identification of the mutant X chromosome responsible for XLA and the carrier status in this family. BTK mRNA was present in normal amounts in Epstein-Barr virus-induced B lymphoblastoid cell lines established from affected family members. Although the SH3 deletion did not alter BTK protein stability and kinase activity of the truncated BTK protein was normal, the affected patients nevertheless have a severe B cell defect characteristic for XLA. The mutant protein was modeled using the normal BTK SH3 domain. The deletion results in loss of two COOH-terminal beta strands containing several residues critical for the formation of the putative SH3 ligand-binding pocket. We predict that, as a result, one or more crucial SH3 binding proteins fail to interact with BTK, interrupting the cytoplasmic signal transduction process required for B cell differentiation

    An improved multiple model particle filtering approach for manoeuvring target tracking using airborne GMTI with geographic information

    This paper proposes a ground vehicle tracking method using an airborne ground moving target indicator radar where the surrounding geographic information is considered to determine vehicle's movement type as well as constrain its positions. Multiple state models corresponding to different movement modes are applied to represent the vehicle's behaviour in different terrain conditions. Based on geographic conditions and multiple state models, a constrained variable structure multiple model particle filter algorithm is proposed. Compared with the traditional multiple model particle filtering schemes, the proposed algorithm utilises a particle swarm optimisation technique which generates more effective particles and generated particles are constrained into the feasible geographic region. Numerical simulation results in a realistic environment show that the proposed method achieves better tracking performance compared with current state-of-the-art ones for manoeuvring vehicle tracking

    Establishing production service system and information collaboration platform for mold and die products

    This paper investigates how the new concept of product service systems can be used and extended to transform, elevate, and revitalize traditional equipment manufacturing industry such as the Mold and Die (MD) sector. A mold and die production service systems (MPSS) framework is established based on recent developments within our industrial collaborators. Within the MPSS framework, MD manufacturers become more specialized in producing MD products and components while sharing and outsourcing manufacturing-oriented services (MOS) from a service provider. Typical services include collaborative order pooling and release, collaborative project progress status tracking, contractor-managed collaborative outsourcing, collaborative product design, collaborative production planning and scheduling, and after-sales technical supports. MOSs are designed, developed, and deployed as SaaS (software as application services) following the service-oriented architecture. Collectively, they form iMPSS-an Information and Collaboration Platform that enables MPSS.     The Dirichlet and the weighted metrics for the space of Kahler metrics

    In this work we study the intrinsic geometry of the space of Kahler metrics under various Riemannian metrics. The first part is on the Dirichlet metric. We motivate its study, we compute its curvature, and we make links with the Calabi metric, the K-energy, the degenerate complex Hessian equation.
