    Flip: Data-Centric Edge CGRA Accelerator

    Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Arrays (CGRA) are promising edge accelerators due to the outstanding balance in flexibility, performance, and energy efficiency. Classic CGRAs statically map compute operations onto the processing elements (PE) and route the data dependencies among the operations through the Network-on-Chip. However, CGRAs are designed for fine-grained static instruction-level parallelism and struggle to accelerate applications with dynamic and irregular data-level parallelism, such as graph processing. To address this limitation, we present Flip, a novel accelerator that enhances traditional CGRA architectures to boost the performance of graph applications. Flip retains the classic CGRA execution model while introducing a special data-centric mode for efficient graph processing. Specifically, it exploits the natural data parallelism of graph algorithms by mapping graph vertices onto processing elements (PEs) rather than the operations, and supporting dynamic routing of temporary data according to the runtime evolution of the graph frontier. Experimental results demonstrate that Flip achieves up to 36Ă—\times speedup with merely 19% more area compared to classic CGRAs. Compared to state-of-the-art large-scale graph processors, Flip has similar energy efficiency and 2.2Ă—\times better area efficiency at a much-reduced power/area budget

    Learning to Evaluate Performance of Multi-modal Semantic Localization

    Semantic localization (SeLo) refers to the task of obtaining the most relevant locations in large-scale remote sensing (RS) images using semantic information such as text. As an emerging task based on cross-modal retrieval, SeLo achieves semantic-level retrieval with only caption-level annotation, which demonstrates its great potential in unifying downstream tasks. Although SeLo has been carried out successively, but there is currently no work has systematically explores and analyzes this urgent direction. In this paper, we thoroughly study this field and provide a complete benchmark in terms of metrics and testdata to advance the SeLo task. Firstly, based on the characteristics of this task, we propose multiple discriminative evaluation metrics to quantify the performance of the SeLo task. The devised significant area proportion, attention shift distance, and discrete attention distance are utilized to evaluate the generated SeLo map from pixel-level and region-level. Next, to provide standard evaluation data for the SeLo task, we contribute a diverse, multi-semantic, multi-objective Semantic Localization Testset (AIR-SLT). AIR-SLT consists of 22 large-scale RS images and 59 test cases with different semantics, which aims to provide a comprehensive evaluations for retrieval models. Finally, we analyze the SeLo performance of RS cross-modal retrieval models in detail, explore the impact of different variables on this task, and provide a complete benchmark for the SeLo task. We have also established a new paradigm for RS referring expression comprehension, and demonstrated the great advantage of SeLo in semantics through combining it with tasks such as detection and road extraction.     A Miniature Probe for Ultrasonic Penetration of a Single Cell

    Although ultrasound cavitation must be avoided for safe diagnostic applications, the ability of ultrasound to disrupt cell membranes has taken on increasing significance as a method to facilitate drug and gene delivery. A new ultrasonic resonance driving method is introduced to penetrate rigid wall plant cells or oocytes with springy cell membranes. When a reasonable design is created, ultrasound can gather energy and increase the amplitude factor. Ultrasonic penetration enables exogenous materials to enter cells without damaging them by utilizing instant acceleration. This paper seeks to develop a miniature ultrasonic probe experiment system for cell penetration. A miniature ultrasonic probe is designed and optimized using the Precise Four Terminal Network Method and Finite Element Method (FEM) and an ultrasonic generator to drive the probe is designed.     Complete Genome Sequences of One Salt-Tolerant and Petroleum Hydrocarbon-Emulsifying Terribacillus saccharophilus Strain ZY-1

    Salt tolerance is one of the most important problems in the field of environmental governance and restoration. Among the various sources of factors, except temperature, salinity is a key factor that interrupts bacterial growth significantly. In this regard, constant efforts are made for the development of salt-tolerant strains, but few strains with salt tolerance, such as Terribacillus saccharophilus, were found, and there are still few relevant reports about their salt tolerance from complete genomic analysis. Furthermore, with the development of the economy, environmental pollution caused by oil exploitation has attracted much attention, so it is crucial to find the bacteria from T. saccharophilus which could degrade petroleum hydrocarbon even under high-salt conditions. Herein, one T. saccharophilus strain named ZY-1 with salt tolerance was isolated by increasing the salinity on LB medium step by step with reservoir water as the bacterial source. Its complete genome was sequenced, which was the first report of the complete genome for T. saccharophilus species with petroleum hydrocarbon degradation and emulsifying properties. In addition, its genome sequences were compared with the other five strains that are from the same genus level. The results indicated that there really exist some differences among them. In addition, some characteristics were studied. The salt-tolerant strain ZY-1 developed in this study and its emulsification and degradation performance of petroleum hydrocarbons were studied, which is expected to widely broaden the research scope of petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria in the oil field environment even in the extreme environment. The experiments verified that ZY-1 could significantly grow not only in the salt field but also in the oil field environment. It also demonstrated that the developed salt-tolerant strain can be applied in the petroleum hydrocarbon pollution field for bioremediation. In addition, we expect that the identified variants which occurred specifically in the high-salt strain will enhance the molecular biological understanding and be broadly applied to the biological engineering field

    A case report of neurosyphilis coexisting with a positive MOG antibody manifested as optic neuritis

    BackgroundNeurosyphilis refers to an infection of the central nervous system by Treponema pallidum. The clinical manifestations of neurosyphilis are diverse, making it easy to miss or misdiagnose. Anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease is a recently defined immune-mediated inflammatory demyelinating central nervous system disease. Few studies have reported the coexistence of the two diseases.Case presentationThis case report presents a 37 years-old male patient with neurosyphilis manifested as optic neuritis with a positive myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody. This patient received intravenous administration of 3.2 million units of procaine penicillin every 4 h for 2 weeks, followed by a two-week intramuscular injection of benzathine penicillin. Additionally, methylprednisolone sodium succinate was administered intravenously at 1,000 mg/day, gradually reduced to 500 mg/day and 240 mg/day every 3 days. Subsequently, prednisone tablets at a dosage of 60 mg/day were orally administered, with a gradual reduction of 5 mg/day every 3 days until reaching a dosage of 30 mg/day. The patient’s visual acuity was improved after 26 days of hospitalization. However, the visual field and color vision did not. At 3 months of follow-up, the symptoms remained unchanged despite the patient continued taking oral prednisone tablets at a dosage of 30 mg/day.ConclusionNeurosyphilis could be a potential triggering factor for MOGAD. In patients with neurosyphilis, it is strongly recommended to perform testing for MOG antibody along with other brain disease antibodies

    Reduction of structural impacts and distinction of photosynthetic pathways in a global estimation of GPP from space-borne solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence

    Quantifying global photosynthesis remains a challenge due to a lack of accurate remote sensing proxies. Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been shown to be a good indicator of photosynthetic activity across various spatial scales. However, a global and spatially challenging estimate of terrestrial gross primary production (GPP) based on satellite SIF remains unresolved due to the confounding effects of species-specific physical and physiological traits and external factors, such as canopy structure or photosynthetic pathway (C-3 or C-4). Here we analyze an ensemble of far-red SIF data from OCO-2 satellite and ground observations at multiple sites, using the spectral invariant theory to reduce the effects of canopy structure and to retrieve a structure-corrected total canopy SIF emission (SIFtotal). We find that the relationships between observed canopy-leaving SIF and ecosystem GPP vary significantly among biomes. In contrast, the relationships between SIFtotal and GPP converge around two unique models, one for C-3 and one for C-4 plants. We show that the two single empirical models can be used to globally scale satellite SIF observations to terrestrial GPP. We obtain an independent estimate of global terrestrial GPP of 129.56 +/- 6.54 PgC/year for the 2015-2017 period, which is consistent with the state-of-the-art data- and process-oriented models. The new GPP product shows improved sensitivity to previously undetected 'hotspots' of productivity, being able to resolve the double-peak in GPP due to rotational cropping systems. We suggest that the direct scheme to estimate GPP presented here, which is based on satellite SIF, may open up new possibilities to resolve the dynamics of global terrestrial GPP across space and time.Peer reviewe

    White matter hyperintensities burden in the frontal regions is positively correlated to the freezing of gait in Parkinson’s disease

    ObjectivePrevious studies have reported that white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are associated with freezing of gait (FOG), but it is not clear whether their distribution areas have correlations with FOG in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and the potential influencing factors about WMHs.MethodsTwo hundred and forty-six patients with PD who underwent brain MRI were included. Participants were divided into PD with FOG (n = 111) and PD without FOG (n = 135) groups. Scheltens score was used to assess the WMHs burden in the areas of deep white matter hyperintensities (DWMHs), periventricular hyperintensities (PVHs), basal ganglia hyperintensities (BGHs), and infratentorial foci of hyperintensities (ITF). Whole brain WMHs volume was evaluated by automatic segmentation. Binary logistic regression was used to evaluate relationships between WMHs and FOG. The common cerebrovascular risk factors that may affect WMHs were evaluated by mediation analysis.ResultsThere were no statistical differences between PD with and without FOG groups in whole brain WMHs volume, total Scheltens score, BGHs, and ITF. Binary logistic regression showed that the total scores of DWMHs (OR = 1.094; 95% CI, 1.001, 1.195; p = 0.047), sum scores of PVHs and DWMHs (OR = 1.080; 95% CI, 1.003, 1.164; p = 0.042), especially the DWMHs in frontal (OR = 1.263; 95% CI, 1.060, 1.505 p = 0.009), and PVHs in frontal caps (OR = 2.699; 95% CI, 1.337, 5.450; p = 0.006) were associated with FOG. Age, hypertension, and serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) are positively correlated with scores of DWMHs in frontal and PVHs in frontal caps.ConclusionThese results indicate that WMHs distribution areas especially in the frontal of DWMHs and PVHs play a role in PD patients with FOG
