Metallic liquid hydrogen and likely Al2O3 metallic glass

Dynamic compression has been used to synthesize liquid metallic hydrogen at 140 GPa (1.4 million bar) and experimental data and theory predict Al2O3 might be a metallic glass at ~300 GPa. The mechanism of metallization in both cases is probably a Mott-like transition. The strength of sapphire causes shock dissipation to be split differently in the strong solid and soft fluid. Once the 4.5-eV H-H and Al-O bonds are broken at sufficiently high pressures in liquid H2 and in sapphire (single-crystal Al2O3), electrons are delocalized, which leads to formation of energy bands in fluid H and probably in amorphous Al2O3. The high strength of sapphire causes shock dissipation to be absorbed primarily in entropy up to ~400 GPa, which also causes the 300-K isotherm and Hugoniot to be virtually coincident in this pressure range. Above ~400 GPa shock dissipation must go primarily into temperature, which is observed experimentally as a rapid increase in shock pressure above ~400 GPa. The metallization of glassy Al2O3, if verified, is expected to be general in strong oxide insulators. Implications for Super Earths are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 14th Liquid and Amorphous Metals Conference, Rome 201

Theory and experiment research on the static capability and dynamic property of inflatable beams

    Get PDF
The paper analysis static load bearing capacity and dynamic properties of two examples of inflatable beams, the membrane material selected for the first example is the ETFE coated fabric, and the membrane material of the second example is airship envelop fabric, Uretek3216L. The load-displacement curve of inflated beam in bending is obtained and compared with the experimental data. The deflections calculated of ETFE inflatable beams show coincidence with measured curves, but the deflection calculated of airship envelop inflatable beam has deviations between calculated and experimental results. The dynamic properties of ETFE inflatable beams showed good coincidence with experimental results, but the first frequency of airship envelop inflatable beam have difference with experimental results

Cosmological constraints on unparticle dark matter

In unparticle dark matter (unmatter) models the equation of state of the unmatter is given by p=ρ/(2dU+1)p=\rho/(2d_U+1), where dUd_U is the scaling factor. Unmatter with such equations of state would have a significant impact on the expansion history of the universe. Using type Ia supernovae (SNIa), the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements and the shift parameter of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to place constraints on such unmatter models we find that if only the SNIa data is used the constraints are weak. However, with the BAO and CMB shift parameter data added strong constraints can be obtained. For the Λ\LambdaUDM model, in which unmatter is the sole dark matter, we find that dU>60d_U > 60 at 95% C.L. For comparison, in most unparticle physics models it is assumed dU<2d_U<2. For the Λ\LambdaCUDM model, in which unmatter co-exists with cold dark matter, we found that the unmatter can at most make up a few percent of the total cosmic density if dU<10d_U<10, thus it can not be the major component of dark matter.Comment: Replaced with revised version. BAO data is added to make a tighter constraint. Version accepted for publication on Euro.Phys.J.

Experimental method for biaxial tensile strength of fabrics and preliminary investigations

    Get PDF
This paper presents a novel experimental approach to determine the biaxial strength of fabrics. A double-layer cruciform specimen was proposed based on the improvement of previous test specimen. The design and manufacture process of the novel specimen was described in detail. Uniaxial and biaxial tests of a specific material were performed subsequently. Based on numerical simulation, the biaxial strength of the fabrics was preliminary investigated. And the correlation between uniaxial and biaxial strength of the material was discussed. The proposed experiments could characterize the biaxial strength of fabrics, and the biaxial strength of the fabrics at 1:1 tension is higher than the weft strength and little lower than the warp strength

Two-Boson Exchange Physics: A Brief Review

Current status of the two-boson exchange contributions to elastic electron-proton scattering, both for parity conserving and parity-violating, is briefly reviewed. How the discrepancy in the extraction of elastic nucleon form factors between unpolarized Rosenbluth and polarization transfer experiments can be understood, in large part, by the two-photon exchange corrections is discussed. We also illustrate how the measurement of the ratio between positron-proton and electron-proton scattering can be used to differentiate different models of two-photon exchange. For the parity-violating electron-proton scattering, the interest is on how the two-boson exchange (TBE), \gamma Z-exchange in particular, could affect the extraction of the long-sought strangeness form factors. Various calculations all indicate that the magnitudes of effect of TBE on the extraction of strangeness form factors is small, though can be large percentage-wise in certain kinematics.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, prepared for Proceedings of the fifth Asia-Pacific Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics (APFB2011), Seoul, Korea, August 22-26, 2011, to appear in Few-Body Systems, November 201

Mechanical Properties of Friction Stir-Welded Joints of Aluminum Alloys

    No full text
Mechanical properties, intergranular corrosion, and a chemical composition of the welded joint, produced with friction stir welding of a 6061T651 aluminum alloy were investigated. The results show that the welded seam is uniform, with a smooth surface. There are no deformation and defects, such as cracks or gas-filled porosity. The average tensile strength of welded joints is 73% of that of the base material, while the average yield strength and elongation are only 54% and 43% of those of the base material. After intergranular corrosion, microhardness changes evidently and corrosion resistance is lower in the root of the weld nugget zone. The change in microhardness is not pronounced in the weld nugget zone and welded surface, but the change in microhardness is well-pronounced and corrosion resistance is lower in the thermomechanically- and heat-affected zones.

Central limit theorem for multiplicative class functions on the symmetric group

Hambly, Keevash, O'Connell and Stark have proven a central limit theorem for the characteristic polynomial of a permutation matrix with respect to the uniform measure on the symmetric group. We generalize this result in several ways. We prove here a central limit theorem for multiplicative class functions on symmetric group with respect to the Ewens measure and compute the covariance of the real and the imaginary part in the limit. We also estimate the rate of convergence with the Wasserstein distance.Comment: 23 pages; the mathematics is the same as in the previous version, but there are several improvments in the presentation, including a more intuitve name for the considered function

Identification of a candidate gene for Rc-D1, a locus controlling red coleoptile colour in wheat

    Get PDF
Red coleoptile is an easily observed agronomic trait of wheat and has been extensively studied. However, the molecular mechanism of this trait has not yet been revealed. In this study, the MYB gene TaMYB-D1 was isolated from the wheat cultivar ‘Gy115’, which possesses red coleoptiles. This gene resided at the short arm of the homoelogous group 7 chromosomes. TaMYB-D1 was the only gene expressed in the coleoptiles of ‘Gy115’ and was not expressed in ‘Opata’ and ‘CS’, which have uncoloured coleoptiles. Phylogenetic analysis placed TaMYB-D1 very close to ZmC1 and other MYB proteins regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis. The encoded protein of TaMYB-D1 had an integrated DNA binding domain of 102 amino acids and a transcription domain with 42 amino acids, similar to the structure of ZmC1. Transient expression analysis in onion epidermal cells showed that TaMYB-D1 was located at the plant nucleus, which suggested its role as a transcription factor. The expression of TaMYB-D1 was accompanied with the expression of TaDFR and anthocyanin biosynthesis in the development of the coleoptile of ‘Gy115’. Transient expression analysis showed that only TaMYB-D1 induced a few ‘Opata’ coleoptile cells to synthesize anthocyanin in light, and the gene also induced a colour change to red in many cells with the help of ZmR. All of these results suggested TaMYB-D1 as the candidate gene for the red coleoptile trait of ‘Gy115’

Towards a quantitative phase-field model of two-phase solidification

We construct a diffuse-interface model of two-phase solidification that quantitatively reproduces the classic free boundary problem on solid-liquid interfaces in the thin-interface limit. Convergence tests and comparisons with boundary integral simulations of eutectic growth show good accuracy for steady-state lamellae, but the results for limit cycles depend on the interface thickness through the trijunction behavior. This raises the fundamental issue of diffuse multiple-junction dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Better final discussion. 1 reference adde
