    Cette étude trouve son origine et sa justification dans le souci de plus en plus explicite de relier les questions de développement et d'environnement. Ce document est divisé en quatre parties : - La première s'attache à circonscrire la notion de pauvreté et à poser le problème de ses relations avec les comportements et stratégies des agriculteurs de l'Afrique soudano-sahélienne. Elle précise ensuite quelques notions et hypothèses relatives à l'exploitation du milieu et à ses rapports avec la pauvreté. - La deuxième partie est consacrée à un rappel des principales dynamiques qui permettent de restituer dans leur contexte spatial et temporel les stratégies et comportements des agriculteurs de cette région : mutations récentes de l'environnement agro-climatique, croissance de la population et migrations, changements économiques et institutionnels. - La troisième partie traite du thème de la pauvreté, des comportements des agriculteurs vis-à-vis de l'exploitation du milieu et de leurs relations dans sept situations agraires caractéristiques de l'Afrique soudano-sahélienne : pastoralisme nord-sahélien, agropastoralisme sahélien, systèmes céréaliers des régions sahélo-soudaniennes, zones arachidières, zones cotonnières, agricultures pionnières, grands périmètres irrigués sahéliens. - La quatrième partie rassemble les principales conclusions des études précédentes et débouchent sur des propositions destinées à la recherche ainsi qu'au développemen

    Translational Genomics in Legumes Allowed Placing In Silico 5460 Unigenes on the Pea Functional Map and Identified Candidate Genes in Pisum sativum L.

    To identify genes involved in phenotypic traits, translational genomics from highly characterized model plants to poorly characterized crop plants provides a valuable source of markers to saturate a zone of interest as well as functionally characterized candidate genes. In this paper, an integrated view of the pea genetic map was developed. A series of gene markers were mapped and their best reciprocal homologs were identified on M. truncatula, L. japonicus, soybean, and poplar pseudomolecules. Based on the syntenic relationships uncovered between pea and M. truncatula, 5460 pea Unigenes were tentatively placed on the consensus map. A new bioinformatics tool, http://www.thelegumeportal.net/pea_mtr_translational_toolkit, was developed that allows, for any gene sequence, to search its putative position on the pea consensus map and hence to search for candidate genes among neighboring Unigenes. As an example, a promising candidate gene for the hypernodulation mutation nod3 in pea was proposed based on the map position of the likely homolog of Pub1, a M. truncatula gene involved in nodulation regulation. A broader view of pea genome evolution was obtained by revealing syntenic relationships between pea and sequenced genomes.     Genetic heterogeneity in hypokalemic periodic paralysis

    Abstract Hypokalemic periodic paralysis (hypoPP) is an autosomal dominant disorder belonging to a group of muscle diseases known to involve an abnormal function of ion channels. The latter includes hypokalemic and hyperkalemic periodic paralyses, and non-dystrophic myotonias. We recently showed genetic linkage of hypoPP to loci on chromosome lq31-32, co-localized with the DHP-sensitive calcium channel CACNL1A3. We propose to term this locus hypoPP-1. Using extended haplotypes with new markers located on chromosome lq31-32, we now report the detailed mapping of hypoPP-1 within a 7 cM interval. Two recombinants between hypoPP-1 and the flanking markers D1S413 and D1S510 should help to reduce further the hypoPP-1 interval. We used this new information to demonstrate that a large family of French origin displaying hypoPP is not genetically linked to hypoPP-1.     Large kidneys predict poor renal outcome in subjects with diabetes and chronic kidney disease

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Renal hypertrophy occurs early in diabetic nephropathy, its later value is unknown. Do large kidneys still predict poor outcome in patients with diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)?</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Seventy-five patients with diabetes and CKD according to a Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR, by 51Cr-EDTA clearance) below 60 mL/min/1.73 m<sup>2 </sup>or an Albumin Excretion Rate above 30 mg/24 H, had an ultrasound imaging of the kidneys and were cooperatively followed during five years by the Diabetology and Nephrology departments of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Bordeaux.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The patients were mainly men (44/75), aged 62 ± 13 yrs, with long-standing diabetes (duration:17 ± 9 yrs, 55/75 type 2), and CKD: initial GFR: 56.5 (8.5-209) mL/min/1.73 m<sup>2</sup>, AER: 196 (20-2358) mg/24 H. Their mean kidney lenght (108 ± 13 mm, 67-147) was correlated to the GFR (r = 0.23, p < 0.05). During the follow-up, 9/11 of the patients who had to start dialysis came from the half with the largest kidneys (LogRank: p < 0.05), despite a 40% higher initial isotopic GFR. Serum creatinine were initially lower (Small kidneys: 125 (79-320) μmol/L, Large: 103 (50-371), p < 0.05), but significantly increased in the "large kidneys" group at the end of the follow-up (Small kidneys: 129 (69-283) μmol/L, Large: 140 (50-952), p < 0.005 vs initial). The difference persisted in the patients with severe renal failure (KDOQI stages 4,5).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Large kidneys still predict progression in advanced CKD complicating diabetes. In these patients, ultrasound imaging not only excludes obstructive renal disease, but also provides information on the progression of the renal disease.</p

    Corticosterone and dopamine D2/D3 receptors mediate the motivation for voluntary wheel running in C57BL/6J mice

    Physical exercise can improve cognition but whether this is related to motivation levels is unknown. Voluntary wheel running is a rewarding activity proposed as a model of motivation to exercise. To question the potential effects of exercise motivation on subsequent behaviour, we used a pharmacological approach targeting some reward mechanisms. The stress hormone corticosterone has rewarding effects mediated by activation of low affinity glucocorticoid receptors (GR). To investigate whether corticosterone synthesis motivates exercise via activation of GRs and subsequently, impacts on behaviour, we treated C57BL/6J mice acutely with the inhibitor of corticosterone synthesis metyrapone (35 mg/kg) or repeatedly with the GR antagonist mifepristone (30 mg/kg) prior to 1-h running wheel sessions. To investigate whether reducing motivation to exercise impacts on behaviour, we antagonised running-induced dopamine D2/D3 receptors activation with sulpiride (25 or 50 mg/kg) and assessed locomotor, anxietyrelated and memory performance after 20 running sessions over 4 weeks. We found that corticosterone synthesis contributes to running levels, but the maintenance of running behaviour was not mediated by activation of GRs. Intermittent exercise was not associated with changes in behavioural or cognitive performance. The persistent reduction in exercise levels triggered by sulpiride also had limited impact on behavioural performance, although the level of performance for some behaviours was related to the level of exercise. Altogether, these findings indicate that corticosterone and dopamine D2/D3 receptor activation contribute to the motivation for wheel running, but suggest that motivation for exercise is not a sufficient factor to alter behaviour in healthy mice
