Leakage analysis of gasketed flange joints under combined internap pressure and thermal loading

    Get PDF
Leakage in Gasketed Flanged Joints (GFJs) have always been a great problem for the process industry. The sealing performance of a GFJ depends on its installation and applied loading conditions. This paper aims to finding the leak rate through ANSI class#150 flange joints using a compressed asbestos sheet (CAS) gasket under combined structural and thermal transient loading conditions using two different leak rate models and two different bolt-up levels. The first model is a Gasket Compressive Strain model in which strains are determined using finite element analysis. The other model is based on Porous Media Theory in which gasket is considered as porous media. Leakage rates are determined using both leak rate models and are compared against appropriate tightness classes and the effectiveness of each approach is presented

Review of Food Safety Policy in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Food safety is an integral part of food and nutrition security. Foodborne diseases (FBD) can occur when food safety measures are not applied. Unfortunately, most of the burden of foodborne illness is shouldered by children under five years of age and people living in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). The foundation of food safety is built upon a quality-safety culture, compliance with food laws, regulation, policy, traceability, and food safety management systems encompassing documentation, training, auditing, reporting and corrective action. This paper reviews four existing national policy documents in Nigeria, three of which include food safety components.  The fourth document, the National Policy on Food Safety and Its Implementation Strategy (NPFSIS), is Nigeria’s principal food safety policy document and was reviewed in more detail. This review focuses on the situational and analytical concepts of the policy framework of the National Food Safety System (NFSS) in Nigeria. It also examines the status of the implementation of the NPFSIS 2014 and its alignment with international best practices. It was undertaken to assess existing food safety policy documents in Nigeria, identify gaps, make recommendations, and proffer solutions. Contributing factors to gaps in vaccination coverage in conflict-affected populations

    Get PDF
This review compiles trends in literature related to major factors contributing to low vaccination coverage for refugees, internally displaced persons, and migrants fleeing war and conflict zones. More specifically, this review considers populations fleeing conflict zones to internally displaced camps or refugee camps in neighboring countries or border zones, as well as the prevalence of underimmunization in asylum seekers. Given the rising displacement of persons throughout the world due to ongoing and emerging conflicts, the public health significance and need for effective, well-planned, and increased vaccination coverage to reduce vaccine-preventable disease transmission and outbreaks is extremely important. The methods used involved compiling peer-reviewed articles using a PubMed search. This was done within a literature search period from January 1st, 2002 to December 31st, 2017 and resulted in a review of twenty-six articles. The results of this review can be used to determine methods to identify barriers and major contributing factors to effective vaccination methods and strategies in conflict-affected populations. There is limited but developing research on the direct relation between conflict and vaccine-preventable diseases or infectious diseases. There are also few immediate policy or practice solutions formulated to address the destruction of healthcare infrastructure in conflict zones. Few policy measures in place, further jeopardizes the health of vulnerable populations. Further research is needed to assess gaps in vaccination coverage for emerging conflict zones and regions of the world because of limitations to this strategy, limitations to strategies already in place, and insufficient studies to address this topic

Roolit jakoon : näyttelijöiden kokemuksia roolitetuksi tulemisesta

    Get PDF
Tutkimus antaa vastauksia siihen miksi roolit usein jakautuvat tietyllä tavalla. The present thesis charts both amateur and professional actors’ experiences of being cast and which aspects have affected the casting process. The topic of this research is the actor and his roles in the traditional text based theatre. Therefore the present thesis gives voice to both amateur and professional actors from different ages and backgrounds. Their casting experiences are examined from the following points of views: type casting, character role and the dream role. This thesis also depicts the pressure that appearances have on getting roles. Furthermore the differences and similarities between the operations of community theatre and institutionalized theatre are discussed. The most important aspect however is to hear the actors’ own voices. The survey material in addition to the professional actors has been collected conducting interviews. Moreover the amateur actors’ narrations have been put together by the enquiry study method. The writer reflects the interview material on her own experiences of being cast as an amateur and professional actor. This thesis also looks into the terms related to casting and subsequently charts their relevance. The writer appoints claims about the reasons and possibilities of casting, which are studied through the interview material. This thesis is also concerned with casting from a drama instructor’s point of view by studying of the importance of basic drama education with respect to teaching teamwork skills and appreciating all forms of roles. This survey reveals both amateur and professional actors’ need to talk about their experiences of being cast. The thesis shows that Finnish actors accept all sizes and types of roles with the same high work ethic, even though everyone has their own dreams and hopes concerning the roles. The thesis gives answers to the question why the roles are often being cast in a certain way

    Get PDF
By integrating physics laboratories with engineering design and computer science, students apply physics principles to ill-structured and complex problems, engage in knowledge transfer, and gain interest in STEM. The introductory physics labs at Purdue have been updated to include engineering design and computer science principles that ground physics in authentic problems. Integrated labs have been evaluated using student perception post-surveys, student course performance, interviews, and case-study observations. Preliminary results indicate that integrated physics labs promote transfer, enhanced metacognitive skills, student interest, and motivation

Decitabine, a DNA-demethylating agent, promotes differentiation via NOTCH1 signaling and alters immune-related pathways in muscle-invasive bladder cancer

Aberrant DNA methylation observed in cancer can provide survival benefits to cells by silencing genes essential for anti-tumor activity. DNA-demethylating agents such as Decitabine (DAC)/Azacitidine (AZA) activate otherwise silenced tumor suppressor genes, alter immune response and epigenetically reprogram tumor cells. In this study, we show that non-cytotoxic nanomolar DAC concentrations modify the bladder cancer transcriptome to activate NOTCH1 at the mRNA and protein level, increase double-stranded RNA sensors and CK5-dependent differentiation. Importantly, DAC treatment increases ICN1 expression (the active intracellular domain of NOTCH1) significantly inhibiting cell proliferation and causing changes in cell size inducing morphological alterations reminiscent of senescence. These changes were not associated with β-galactosidase activity or increased p16 levels, but instead were associated with substantial IL-6 release. Increased IL-6 release was observed in both DAC-treated and ICN1 overexpressing cells as compared to control cells. Exogenous IL-6 expression was associated with a similar enlarged cell morphology that was rescued by the addition of a monoclonal antibody against IL-6. Treatment with DAC, overexpression with ICN1 or addition of exogenous IL-6 showed CK5 reduction, a surrogate marker of differentiation. Overall this study suggests that in MIBC cells, DNA hypomethylation increases NOTCH1 expression and IL-6 release to induce CK5-related differentiation.Fil: Ramakrishnan, Swathi. Climate-related risks to cage aquaculture in the reservoirs of Northern Thailand

    Get PDF
Extreme or unusual weather is suspected to be a factor in mass mortality events of fish cage aquaculture in reservoirs. The most important climate-related risk was drought or low water levels, which also contributes the largest financial impact. Other climate-related risks perceived as important included: over-turning of stratified cooler and anoxic bottom water layers; prolonged cloud cover; sharp changes in temperature; heat waves; and cold spells. Risks are primarily managed at the farm level with techniques such as aeration, and reducing feed during stressful periods. This is a one-page draft for a larger article

Learning about climate-related risks: decisions of Northern Thailand fish farmers in a role-playing simulation game

    Get PDF
The findings of this study underline the importance of understanding decision-making behaviour around risks for climate risk management in fish farming. The study aimed to improve how farmers make investment decisions in their fish farms when faced with risks from floods. The simulation game provided novel situations of experimental, role-playing, and decision-making, revealing limitations in common assumptions about the ease of learning from previous experiences. Findings also suggest that decision-support systems for aquaculture should take into account how recent experiences, understanding of information, and other factors influence risk perceptions and decisions
