    Il était une fois l'Ifremer

The development of sustainable fishing and aquaculture, interactions with climate change and the preservation of marine biodiversity place the oceans at the center of major issues. In the marine sciences landscape, Ifremer (French Research Institute for the Exploitation of the Sea) plays a central role. It is the only French research organization whose activities are all linked to the sea. Resolutely focused on the challenges to come, Ifremer is no less part of a story. This is the story that Gilles Chatry, archivist at Ifremer, wishes to share with the public for the first time. Created in 1984 from the merger between Cnexo and ISTPM, Ifremer has its roots in the more distant past, in the 19th century, when science invested in marine fisheries. By examining the archives of Ifremer in particular, the author sketches an unknown institutional history. As in a journal, the reader goes back in time, following key dates to the rise of modern oceanology. This is the genesis of this organization - outstanding personalities, ambitious scientific programs, new vessels and measuring instruments - that the author brings to life through his richly documented and illustrated story. Lovers of maritime history, oceanography and oceanology will find something to feed their curiosity there

Long-term planning elements for public policies to prevent forest fires in the context of climate change

    No full text
By 2050, nearly half the surface area of heathland and forests in mainland France may be affected by a high level of exposure to forest fires (i.e. an increase in excess of 30%). Nonetheless preventive measures and control undertaken since the beginning of the 1990s have significantly reduced the damage caused by fire (20,000 ha destroyed by fire from 1991-2009 compared to 45,000 ha previously); these encouraging results may now be challenged by climate change. The prospective study commissioned by the three ministries (Agriculture, Environment and Internal Affairs) on the impact of climate change on the vulnerability of French Forests to fire hazards also forecasts that the current cost of fire prevention and fighting (more than half a billion euros, two thirds of which are accounted for by firefighting and one third fire prevention) will increase by at least 20%.À l’horizon 2050, près de la moitié de la surface des landes et forêts métropolitaines pourrait être concernée par un niveau élevé d’aléa feux de forêts (soit plus de 30 % d’augmentation).
