Is the Hospitality Industry Ready for the New Lease Accounting Standards?

    Get PDF
The days where companies can use off-balance sheet leases are coming to an end. The new lease accounting standards, ASU 842 and IFRS 16, released in early 2016, will be effective, respectively, on December 15, 2018, and January 1, 2019. Under the new standards, virtually all leases will be recognized on a lessee’s balance sheet. Hence, financial statements and ratios of companies that heavily use off-balance sheet leases will be considerably impacted. Our analysis of the off-balance sheet leases by the hospitality industry indicates that hospitality companies do extensively use these operating leases, which amounted to 51% of their assets in 2015. The expected widespread unfavorable impact on a lessee’s debt ratios and interest coverages could also affect a hospitality company’s borrowing rates and debt covenants. Given that the implementation is most likely time consuming, not just costly, the earlier the hospitality companies are prepared for the new standards the better

Managing Invisible Boundaries: How "Smart" is Smartphone Use in the Work and Home Domains?

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)The present study sought to examine the impact of technology in permeating the boundaries between individuals’ work and family domains, testing and extending the current theoretical model of boundary management. The first goal, to explore predictors of the boundary management styles (BMS) people use with respect to communication technology (CT), was accomplished by demonstrating that three factors predicted BMS for CT use: preferences for integration, identity centrality, and work/family norms. The second goal, to examine outcomes that could result from varying CT use boundary management styles, was also supported in that BMS for CT use was a predictor of work-family conflict and enrichment. However, one key component of the model was not supported in that perceived control over BMS did not moderate the relationship between BMS and outcomes. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed, as well as suggestions for future research on boundary theory and CT use. By exploring tangible boundary management behaviors, the present study offers interesting implications that could ultimately assist organizations in developing policies regarding CT use both at home and at work

Nitric acid scavenging by mineral and biomass burning aerosols

The abundance of gas phase nitric acid in the upper troposphere is overestimated by global chemistry-transport models, especially during the spring and summer seasons. Recent aircraft data obtained over the central US show that mineral aerosols were abundant in the upper troposphere during spring. Chemical reactions on mineral dust may provide an important sink for nitric acid. In regions where the mineral dust abundance is low in the upper troposphere similar HNO3 removal processes may occur on biomass burning aerosols. We propose that mineral and biomass burning aerosols may provide an important global sink for gas phase nitric acid, particularly during spring and summer when aerosol composition in the upper troposphere may be greatly affected by dust storms from east Asia or tropical biomass burning plumes

Data science and AI: Trends analysis

This study has the primary goal to analyze the growth of data science through the main search trends. This study was conducted by defining in high level the concept of data science as well as its main components. Supported in those elements, we identified the main trends. We used mainly data from google trends to determine the evolution of search by topics., research area, or simple expressions. It allowed us to reckon that artificial intelligence (AI)suffered a lack of interest until 2012. Then it became an increasingly popular field since 2014. This is due to the progression of machine learning and data science. Results show a cumulative search of data science since 2012.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
