    Mechanistic insights into sodium storage in hard carbon anodes using local structure probes

    Operando 23^{23}Na solid-state NMR and pair distribution function analysis experiments provide insights into the structure of hard carbon anodes in sodium-ion batteries. Capacity results from "diamagnetic" sodium ions first adsorbing onto pore surfaces, defects and between expanded layers, before pooling into larger quasi-metallic clusters/expanded carbon sheets at lower voltages.J.     Mammalian cell entry genes in Streptomyces may provide clues to the evolution of bacterial virulence

    Understanding the evolution of virulence is key to appreciating the role specific loci play in pathogenicity. Streptomyces species are generally non-pathogenic soil saprophytes, yet within their genome we can find homologues of virulence loci. One example of this is the mammalian cell entry (mce) locus, which has been characterised in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. To investigate the role in Streptomyces we deleted the mce locus and studied its impact on cell survival, morphology and interaction with other soil organisms. Disruption of the mce cluster resulted in virulence towards amoebae (Acanthamoeba polyphaga) and reduced colonization of plant (Arabidopsis) models, indicating these genes may play an important role in Streptomyces survival in the environment. Our data suggest that loss of mce in Streptomyces spp. may have profound effects on survival in a competitive soil environment, and provides insight in to the evolution and selection of these genes as virulence factors in related pathogenic organisms

    Stepwise Collapse of a Giant Pore Metal–Organic Framework

    Defect engineering is a powerful tool that can be used to tailor the properties of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Here, we incorporate defects through ball milling to systematically vary the porosity of the giant pore MOF, MIL-100 (Fe). We show that milling leads to the breaking of metal–linker bonds, generating additional coordinatively unsaturated metal sites, and ultimately causes amorphisation. Pair distribution function analysis shows the hierarchical local structure is partially retained, even in the amorphised material. We find that solvents can be used to stabilise the MIL-100 (Fe) framework against collapse, which leads to a substantial retention of porosity over the non-stabilised material

    Significance testing as perverse probabilistic reasoning

    Truth claims in the medical literature rely heavily on statistical significance testing. Unfortunately, most physicians misunderstand the underlying probabilistic logic of significance tests and consequently often misinterpret their results. This near-universal misunderstanding is highlighted by means of a simple quiz which we administered to 246 physicians at two major academic hospitals, on which the proportion of incorrect responses exceeded 90%. A solid understanding of the fundamental concepts of probability theory is becoming essential to the rational interpretation of medical information. This essay provides a technically sound review of these concepts that is accessible to a medical audience. We also briefly review the debate in the cognitive sciences regarding physicians' aptitude for probabilistic inference

    Hydrogen Storage represents one of the key technologies for the expansion of fuel cell activities, most notably in transport applications. For on board storage, vehicles need compact,light,safe and affordable storage and containment. Improved high pressure storage technology cannot meet the (now) accepted practical cruising range of approximately 500 kilometers. To realize sustainable mobility requires drastic advances in storage technology. What is required is nothing short of an'epoch-making breakthrough' in hydrogen storage materials. * At present no existing hydrogen storage material fulfills this pivotal role. Our programme centres on the Vision that new materials are the only viable contenders to meet this challenge. .....and that this International Grand Challenge of Hydrogen Storage has to be solved within this next 5 years to achieve a 2020 Vision of sustainable mobility.
