Asymptotic solvers for ordinary differential equations with multiple frequencies
We construct asymptotic expansions for ordinary differential equations with highly oscillatory forcing terms, focusing on the case of multiple, non-commensurate frequencies. We derive an asymptotic expansion in inverse powers of the oscillatory parameter and use its truncation as an exceedingly effective means to discretize the differential equation in question. Numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the method
A micropillar for cavity optomechanics
We present a new micromechanical resonator designed for cavity optomechanics.
We have used a micropillar geometry to obtain a high-frequency mechanical
resonance with a low effective mass and a very high quality factor. We have
coated a 60-m diameter low-loss dielectric mirror on top of the pillar and
are planning to use this micromirror as part of a high-finesse Fabry-Perot
cavity, to laser cool the resonator down to its quantum ground state and to
monitor its quantum position fluctuations by quantum-limited optical
interferometry
On phenomenon of scattering on resonances associated with discretisation of systems with fast rotating phase
Numerical integration of ODEs by standard numerical methods reduces a
continuous time problems to discrete time problems. Discrete time problems have
intrinsic properties that are absent in continuous time problems. As a result,
numerical solution of an ODE may demonstrate dynamical phenomena that are
absent in the original ODE. We show that numerical integration of system with
one fast rotating phase lead to a situation of such kind: numerical solution
demonstrate phenomenon of scattering on resonances that is absent in the

Evidence of Brillouin scattering in an ytterbium-doped double-clad fiber laser
We have designed and performed an experiment that permitted direct observation of Brillouin backscattering in an Yb-doped double-clad fiber laser. Fifteen Brillouin-shifted frequencies were observed for the first time to our knowledge. We clearly demonstrate that stimulated Brillouin scattering is directly responsible for both fast transient dynamics of the laser and reduction of the laser’s pulse width
Successful Auxiliary Liver Transplant Followed by Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in X-Linked Lymphoproliferative Disease Type 1
We described a five-year-old boy who presented with acute liver failure of indeterminate aetiology, requiring urgent liver transplant. Post-operative course was complicated by pancytopaenia, hypogammaglobulinaemia and cerebral lesions, histologically confirmed as EBV-driven post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease. Genetic testing showed XLP1 mutation, prompting matched-unrelated haematopoietic stem cell transplant to cure his primary immunodeficiency
High-precision measurement of the half-life of Ga
The beta-decay half-life of 62Ga has been studied with high precision using
on-line mass separated samples. The decay of 62Ga which is dominated by a 0+ to
0+ transition to the ground state of 62Zn yields a half-life of T_{1/2} =
116.19(4) ms. This result is more precise than any previous measurement by
about a factor of four or more. The present value is in agreement with older
literature values, but slightly disagrees with a recent measurement. We
determine an error weighted average value of all experimental half-lives of

Design of (ω-N-(O-acyl)hydroxy amid) aminodicarboxylic acid pyrrolidides as potent inhibitors of proline-specific peptidases
AbstractA novel class of competitive, acylating inhibitors for the proline-specific peptidases: dipeptidyl peptidase IV, dipeptidyl peptidase II and prolyl endopeptidase, has been developed. The inhibitor molecules combine the efficacy of aminoacyl pyrrolidides and the potential transacylating capability of diacyl hydroxyl amines. The N-terminal deblocked inhibitors are potent reversible inhibitors of porcine kidney dipeptidyl peptidase IV, human placenta dipeptidyl peptidase II exhibiting K1 values in the μM range. Boc-protected (ω-N-hydroxy acyl amid) aminodiacarboxylic acid pyrrolidides inhibit substrate hydrolysis by prolyl endopeptidases from different sources competitively reaching K, values of 30 nM to 60 μM. Additionally, α-N-BOC-(ω-N-hydroxy acetyl) glutaminyl pyrrolidide modifies human placenta prolyl endopeptidase in a time-dependent reaction
