THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE RED IMPORTED FIRE ANT ON THE METROPLEXES OF TEXAS
This research estimates the annual economic impact of the fire ant on key urban sectors in Texas. A study was conducted in 1998-1999 in the 5 metroplexes of Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston to estimate the costs of controlling and managing fire ants (Lard, et al). This study found that the annual expenditure for fire ant control and management by selected sectors in these metroplexes totaled more than 526 million for households, 25 million for schools, and $0.6 million for cities. These annual cost figures do not include all urban costs or costs borne by electrical utility companies, communication firms and cable companies. These results can be used to assess damages and estimate the potential costs and benefits of control and management programs, such as the community-based effort underway as part of the Texas Fire Ant Initiative.Crop Production/Industries,
A New Hybrid Framework to Efficiently Model Lines of Sight to Gravitational Lenses
In strong gravitational lens systems, the light bending is usually dominated
by one main galaxy, but may be affected by other mass along the line of sight
(LOS). Shear and convergence can be used to approximate the contributions from
less significant perturbers (e.g. those that are projected far from the lens or
have a small mass), but higher order effects need to be included for objects
that are closer or more massive. We develop a framework for multiplane lensing
that can handle an arbitrary combination of tidal planes treated with shear and
convergence and planes treated exactly (i.e., including higher order terms).
This framework addresses all of the traditional lensing observables including
image positions, fluxes, and time delays to facilitate lens modelling that
includes the non-linear effects due to mass along the LOS. It balances accuracy
(accounting for higher-order terms when necessary) with efficiency (compressing
all other LOS effects into a set of matrices that can be calculated up front
and cached for lens modelling). We identify a generalized multiplane mass sheet
degeneracy, in which the effective shear and convergence are sums over the
lensing planes with specific, redshift-dependent weighting factors.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure

Leading Questions to Leading Persons
Leading questions on current legal problems of wide general interest and importance were posed by the Editors of this review to nine leading public figures, each a dean of a law school. These questions were and are frankly difficult and controversial, but their answers are of vital importance to our legal system and to our society. Capsule answers given by these distinguished personages are believed to be interesting and significant. It is emphasized that only very short answers were requested. Brief answers such as these, of course, are not expected to be, nor do they pretend to be, complete or profound. Their purpose is to indicate succinctly the approach of outstanding American opinion makers to difficult socio-legal public problems

Impact of Summer Cattle Grazing on the Sierra Nevada Watershed: Aquatic Algae and Bacteria
Introduction. We evaluated periphytic algal and microbial communities to assess the influence of human and cattle impact on Sierra water quality. Methods. 64 sites (lakes and streams from Lake Tahoe to Sequoia National Park, California) were sampled for suspended indicator bacteria and algae following standardized procedures. The potential for nonpoint pollution was divided into three categories: cattle-grazing areas (C), recreation use areas (R), or remote wildlife areas (W). Results. Periphyton was found at 100% of C sites, 89% of R sites, but only 25% of W sites. Eleven species of periphytic algae were identified, including Zygnema, Ulothrix, Chlorella, Spirogyra, mixed Diatoms, and Cladophoria. Mean benthic algae coverage was 66% at C sites compared to 2% at W sites (P < 0.05). The prevalence of E. coli associated with periphyton was 100% at C sites, 25% of R sites, and 0% of W sites. Mean E. coli CFU/gm of algae detected was: C = 173,000, R = 700, W = 0. (P < 0.05). Analysis of neighboring water for E. coli bacteria >100 CFU/100 mL: C = 91%, R = 8%, W = 0 (P < 0.05). Conclusion. Higher periphytic algal biomass and uniform presence of periphyton-attached E. coli corresponded to watersheds exposed to summer cattle grazing. These differences suggest cattle grazing compromises water quality

Relationship between diffusion capacity and small airway abnormality in COPDGene.
Impaired single breath carbon monoxide diffusing capacity (DLCO) is associated with emphysema. Small airways disease (SAD) may be a precursor lesion to emphysema, but the relationship between SAD and DLCO is undescribed. We hypothesized that in mild COPD, functional SAD (fSAD) defined by computed tomography (CT) and Parametric Response Mapping methodology would correlate with impaired DLCO. Using data from ever-smokers in the COPDGene cohort, we established that fSAD correlated significantly with lower DLCO among both non-obstructed and GOLD 1-2 subjects. The relationship between DLCO with CT-defined emphysema was present in all GOLD stages, but most prominent in severe disease. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT00608764. Registry: COPDGene. The Disease Triangle as a Reusable Learning Object
The disease triangle is a widely used, practical conceptual model for teaching basic plant pathology. The concept is often used as a springboard to introduce students to advanced concepts on how diseases develop and the significance of plant diseases in the environment. This article describes development and recommended usage of an interactive learning object entitled "The Disease Triangle." This object provides three levels of instruction on the disease triangle concept, along with appropriate user activities, including concept mapping, and assessments. Research skills instruction to enhance further application of the concept is also recommended. This project was funded in part by the Ohio Board of Regents grant to Ohio State University Technology Enhanced Learning and Research (TELR

The structure of blocks with a Klein four defect group
We prove Erdmann’s conjecture [16] stating that every block with a Klein four defect group has a simple module with trivial source, and deduce from this that Puig’s finiteness conjecture holds for source algebras of blocks with a Klein four defect group. The proof uses the classification of finite simple groups
Demonstration of integrated microscale optics in surface-electrode ion traps
In ion trap quantum information processing, efficient fluorescence collection
is critical for fast, high-fidelity qubit detection and ion-photon
entanglement. The expected size of future many-ion processors require scalable
light collection systems. We report on the development and testing of a
microfabricated surface-electrode ion trap with an integrated high numerical
aperture (NA) micromirror for fluorescence collection. When coupled to a low NA
lens, the optical system is inherently scalable to large arrays of mirrors in a
single device. We demonstrate stable trapping and transport of 40Ca+ ions over
a 0.63 NA micromirror and observe a factor of 1.9 enhancement in photon
collection compared to the planar region of the trap.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure
