    African American police officers are concerned about the racial profiling of communities of color by their own agencies

    In the wake of the many tragic police shootings of young African-American men in recent years, racial profiling by police has emerged as a significant issue within communities of color. But how is this perceived by African-American police officers? In new survey research Lieutenant Charles P. Wilson, Shirley A. Wilson , and Malane Thou find that a majority of these officers believe that racial profiling not only exists, but that it is condoned by agency supervisors. They also find that these officers feel that their presence was important when dealing with communities of color. They argue that the service of African American police officers has tremendous value, both to the agencies that employ them and to the citizens of their communities

    A heterokaryon instability gene in the Rockefeller-Lindegren strains of Neurospora crassa and its possible relation to the het i gene in Oak Ridge-St. Lawrence strains

    The het I/i genes in the Oak Ridge-St. Lawrence (OR-SL) strains of Neurospora crassa are unique among the het genes in that they do not cause cell death in incompatible heterokaryons. Instead, within certain nuclear ratios, forced heterokaryons are unstable. They become homokaryotic for the het I component, and stop growing. Similar alleles have now been found in Rockefeller-Lindegren (RL) strains. The latter differ from those of the OR-SL strains in that the heterokaryons become homokaryotic over a wide range of initial nuclear ratios.     DSM-5 criteria for substance use disorders: recommendations and rationale.

    Since DSM-IV was published in 1994, its approach to substance use disorders has come under scrutiny. Strengths were identified (notably, reliability and validity of dependence), but concerns have also arisen. The DSM-5 Substance-Related Disorders Work Group considered these issues and recommended revisions for DSM-5. General concerns included whether to retain the division into two main disorders (dependence and abuse), whether substance use disorder criteria should be added or removed, and whether an appropriate substance use disorder severity indicator could be identified. Specific issues included possible addition of withdrawal syndromes for several substances, alignment of nicotine criteria with those for other substances, addition of biomarkers, and inclusion of nonsubstance, behavioral addictions.This article presents the major issues and evidence considered by the work group, which included literature reviews and extensive new data analyses. The work group recommendations for DSM-5 revisions included combining abuse and dependence criteria into a single substance use disorder based on consistent findings from over 200,000 study participants, dropping legal problems and adding craving as criteria, adding cannabis and caffeine withdrawal syndromes, aligning tobacco use disorder criteria with other substance use disorders, and moving gambling disorders to the chapter formerly reserved for substance-related disorders. The proposed changes overcome many problems, while further studies will be needed to address issues for which less data were available

    Discovery of the optical counterpart to the X-ray pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545

    We report optical and infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations that identify the counterpart to the 358.6-s X-ray transient pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545 with a moderately reddened V=14.2 B0Ve star. This identification makes SAX J2103.5+4545 the Be/X-ray binary with the shortest orbital period known, Porb= 12.7 days. The amount of absorption to the system has been estimated to be Av=4.2+-0.3, which for such an early-type star implies a distance of about 6.5 kpc. The optical spectra reveal major and rapid changes in the strength and shape of the Halpha line. The Halpha line was initially observed as a double peak profile with the ratio of the intensities of the blue over the red peak greater than one (V/R > 1). Two weeks later this ratio reversed (V/R< 1). Subsequently, in less than a month, the emission ceased and Halpha appeared in absorption. This fast spectral variability is interpreted within the viscous decretion disc model and demonstrates the significant role of the neutron star on the evolution of the circumstellar disc around the Be star. The implications of the small orbit and moderate eccentricity on the spin period of the neutron star are discussed.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Nationwide profiling of insecticide resistance in Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) in Cameroon

    The Asian mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Skuse), is an invasive mosquito which has become one of the most important vectors of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses worldwide. This species was reported for the first time in Cameroon in early 2000s and became the dominant Aedes species in the urban areas in the southern part of Cameroon but remain poorly characterized. Here, we assessed the susceptibility profile of A. albopictus collected throughout Cameroon and investigated the potential resistance mechanisms involved. Immature stages of A. albopictus were collected between March and July 2017 in 15 locations across Cameroon and reared until G1/G2 generation. Larval, adult bioassays, and synergists [piperonyl butoxide (PBO) and diethyl maleate (DEM)] assays were carried out according to WHO recommendations. F1534C mutation was genotyped in field collected adults (Go) using allele specific PCR. All tested populations were susceptible to both larvicides, temephos and Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), after larval bioassays. Adult bioassays revealed a high level of resistance of A. albopictus to 4% DDT with mortality rates ranging from 12.42% in Bafang to 75.04% in Kumba. The resistance was reported also in 0.05% deltamethrin, 0.25% permethrin, and 0.1% propoxur in some locations. A loss of susceptibility to 0.1% bendiocarb was found in one of three populations analysed. A full susceptibility to 1% fenitrothion were observed across the country. A full recovery or partial of susceptibility was observed in A. albopictus when pre-exposed to PBO or DEM and then to DDT and permethrin, respectively. The F1534C kdr mutation was not detected in A. albopictus. This study showed that the susceptibility profile of A. albopictus to insecticide vary according to the sampling location and insecticides used. These findings are useful to planning vector control program against arbovirus vectors in Cameroon and can be used as baseline data for further researches

    Patterns of Ecological Adaptation of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus and Stegomyia Indices Highlight the Potential Risk of Arbovirus Transmission in Yaoundé, the Capital City of Cameroon

    The dynamic of arbovirus vectors such as Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus remains poorly understood in large cities in central Africa. Here, we compared the larval ecology, geographical distribution and degree of infestation of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus in Yaoundé, the capital city of Cameroon, and estimated their Stegomyia indices revealing a significant potential risk of arbovirus transmission. An entomological survey was conducted in April–May 2018 in a cluster of houses randomly selected. Each selected house was inspected, the number of inhabitants was recorded, and potential and positive containers for Aedes were characterized. Stegomyia and pupae-based indices were estimated. Overall, 447 houses and 954 containers were inspected comprising 10,801 immature stages of Aedes with 84.95% of Ae. albopictus and 15.05% of Ae. aegypti. Both species bred mainly in discarded tanks and used tyres, associated with turbid water and the presence of plant debris inside containers. Aedes albopictus was the most prevalent species in almost all neighbourhoods. The house index, Breteau index, and container index were higher for Ae. albopictus (38.26%, 71.81%, and 29.61%) compared to those of Ae. aegypti (25.73%, 40.93%, and 16.88%). These indices are high compared to the thresholds established by Pan American Health Organization and World Health Organization, which suggests a high potential risk of arbovirus transmission

    NGC 7582: The Prototype Narrow-Line X-ray Galaxy

    NGC 7582 is a candidate prototype of the Narrow Line X-ray Galaxies (NLXGs) found in deep X-ray surveys. An ASCA observation shows the hard (> 3 keV) X-ray continuum of NGC 7582 drops 40% in ~6 ks, implying an AGN, while the soft band (< 3 keV) does not drop in concert with the hard continuum, requiring a separate component. The X-ray spectrum of NGC 7582 also shows a clear 0.5-2 keV soft (kT = 0.8 (+0.9,-0.3) keV or Gamma = 2.4 +/- 0.6; L(X) = 6 x 10**40 ergs s**-1) low--energy component, in addition to a heavily absorbed [N(H) = (6 +/- 2)\times 10**22 cm**-2 ] and variable 2-10 keV power law [Gamma = 0.7 (+0.3,-0.4); L(X) = (1.7-2.3) x 10**42 ergs s**-1]. This is one of the flattest 2-10 keV slopes in any AGN observed with ASCA. (The ROSAT HRI image of NGC 7582 further suggests extent to the SE.) These observations make it clear that the hard X-ray emission of NGC 7582, the most "narrow-line" of the NLXGs, is associated with an AGN. The strong suggestion is that all NLXGs are obscured AGNs, as hypothesized to explain the X-ray background spectral paradox. The separate soft X-ray component makes NGC 7582 (and by extension other NLXGs) detectable as a ROSAT source.Comment: text: Latex2e 10 pages, including 1 table, and 2 postscript figures via psfi
