    Examination of the Basque Collectives: Lessons from One of the World\u27s Most Successful Community Organization Efforts

    The system of Basque collectives is recognized as the world\u27s most effective worker owned system (Henk & Logan, 1982). It is a direct result of the community organization effort of Father Jose Maria Arizmendiarreta, who created an extremely progressive agenda under Spain\u27s repressive Franco regime. Father Jose Maria\u27s work will be explored in this paper and principles extracted that are important lessons for community organization teachers and practitioners. The potential values of worker ownership have long been recognized; the ability of community organizers, however, to realize this potential has generally fallen far short. The worker owned enterprises in the Basque Provinces of Spain stand out as an exception to this dismal rule. Father Jose Maria was the Basque priest and community organizer whose stimulus gave this model of organization the philosophy necessary to ensure its success

Respondents are assigned an achievement score which is an index based on responses to seven questions. The scores of low achievers and high achievers are compared to analyze associations with: validating factors (e.g., salary), personal factors (race and gender), and pre-MSW factors (e.g., undergraduate education)

    Trends in Annual Survival of Steller’s Eiders Molting at Izembek Lagoon on the Alaska Peninsula, 1993–2006

    Izembek Lagoon, located on the Alaska Peninsula, is an important molting area for the Pacific population of Steller’s Eiders (Polysticta stelleri) and was the site of consistent banding effort during 1993–2006. We used Pradel mark-recapture models to estimate annual survival and population growth rates for adult Steller’s Eiders molting at Izembek Lagoon. We designed 32 models that included effects of sex and year on survival, recapture rate, and seniority, as well as potential trends in survival and seniority. The top model incorporated a two-phase trend (1993–98, 1999–2003) in survival and seniority for each sex and fully sex- and year-specific recapture rates. Average annual adult survival was estimated at 0.86 (SE = 0.030) for females and 0.87 (SE = 0.018) for males. Average annual population growth rates since 1998 were estimated to be approximately 1.0 for both sexes. A brief warming event in the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (1997–98) coincided with the lowest estimates of annual survival, while a subsequent return to cooler conditions in the Bering Sea coincided with the highest estimates and an increasing trend in annual survival.La lagune d’Izembek, située dans la péninsule de l’Alaska, constitue une aire de mue importante pour la population d’eiders de Steller (Polysticta stelleri) du Pacifique. Elle a fait l’objet de travaux de baguage soutenus entre 1993 et 2006. Nous nous sommes servis des modèles de marquage et de recapture de Pradel pour estimer les taux de survie et d’accroissement de la population d’eiders de Steller adultes en période de mue à la lagune d’Izembek. Nous avons conçu 32 modèles qui compre-naient les effets du sexe et de l’année sur le taux de survie, le taux de recapture et l’ancienneté. Le meilleur des modèles comprenait une tendance diphasique (de 1993 à 1998, et de 1999 à 2003) en ce qui a trait aux taux de survie et d’ancienneté de chacun des sexes ainsi qu’en ce qui a trait aux taux de recapture entièrement en fonction du sexe et de l’année. Chez les adultes, le taux de survie moyen était estimé à 0,86 (SE = 0,030) pour la femelle et à 0,87 (SE = 0,018) pour le mâle. Depuis 1998, les taux annuels d’accroissement de la population étaient estimés à environ 1,0 dans le cas des deux sexes.     Interactive Effects of Weeds and Defoliating Insects in Soybean (Glycine Max).

    Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of simulated insect defoliation and full season weed competition on soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) growth and yield. Weeds were johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.), common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L.), and hemp sesbania (Sesbania exaltata (Raf.) Rybd. ex A. W. Hill) at 15, 3, and 12 plants/6 m of row. Simulated defoliation at R2 and R5 soybean growth stages was accomplished by removal of 0, 1, or 2 leaflets per soybean trifoliate, which approximated 0, 33, and 66% defoliation, respectively. Averaged across defoliation levels and stages, johnsongrass, common cocklebur, and hemp sesbania reduced soybean yields 30, 15, and 14%, respectively, in 1994 compared with no weed interference. In 1995, common cocklebur did not affect yield, whereas johnsongrass reduced yield 35%. As defoliation level increased, a linear decrease in soybean yield was observed. Averaged across weeds and defoliation stages, 33 and 66% defoliation reduced soybean yield 6 and 20% in 1994 and 12 and 33% in 1995, respectively. Defoliation at R5 resulted in 10% lower yield than defoliation at R2 in one of two years. Yield reduction due combinations of weeds and defoliation was additive. Field experiments evaluated the influence of hemp sesbania and sicklepod (Senna obtusifolia (L.) Irwin and Barneby) on insecticide deposition within the soybean canopy and resultant soybean looper (Pseudoplusia includens (Walker)) control. Dye-sensitive cards placed in top, middle, and bottom portions of the soybean canopy measured spray droplet deposition for the insecticide thiodicarb applied at 504 g ai/ha in 94 L/ha spray volume with a ground sprayer. Spray droplet deposition was highest on cards placed in the top of the soybean canopy, and weeds reduced deposition 26 to 43% compared with weed-free soybean. Thiodicarb deposition within the middle and bottom levels of the canopy was not reduced by weeds. Weeds, however, did not influence thiodicarb efficacy against soybean looper in the field or in laboratory feeding bioassays. Control of both weeds and defoliating pest is important; however, management strategies for soybean looper may not need to be altered when weeds are present

    Needs of caregivers in heart failure management: A qualitative study

It is available via the DOI in this record.Objectives: To identify the needs of caregivers supporting a person with heart failure and to inform the development of a caregiver resource to be used as part of a home-based selfmanagement programme. Methods: A qualitative study informed by thematic analysis involving 26 caregivers in individual interviews or a focus group. Results: Three distinct aspects of caregiver support in heart failure management were identified. Firstly, caregivers identified needs about supporting management of heart failure including: coping with the variability of heart failure symptoms, what to do in an emergency, understanding and managing medicines, providing emotional support, promoting exercise and physical activity, providing personal care, living with a cardiac device and supporting depression management. Secondly, as they make the transition to becoming a caregiver, they need to develop skills to undertake difficult discussions about the role; communicate with health professionals; manage their own mental health, well-being and sleep; and manage home and work. Thirdly, caregivers require skills to engage social support, and voluntary and formal services while recognising that the longterm future is uncertain. Discussion: The identification of the needs of caregiver has been used to inform the development of a home-based heart failure intervention facilitated by a trained health care practitioner.NIHR (Programme Grants for Applied Research
