    WWP2 ubiquitin ligase and its isoforms: New biological insight and promising disease targets

    A number of recent papers on the WWP2 E3 ubiquitin ligase and two novel WWP2 isoforms have revealed important biological insight and disease-specific functions, and also impacted on our understanding of ubiquitin ligases in cell cycle regulation, apoptosis and differentiation. Gene knockout studies suggest a developmental role for WWP2 in chondrogenesis via mechanisms involving cartilage-specific transcription factors. Furthermore, WWP2 isoforms have been shown to selectively target oncogenic signaling pathways linked to both the pTEN tumour suppressor and the TGFß/Smad signaling pathway. Here, it is suggested that WWP2 isoforms have now emerged as central physiological regulators as well as promising new disease targets, and that the challenge ahead is to now develop highly selective WWP2 inhibitors with utility in cartilage disease such as osteoarthritis and as new anticancer strategies

    Studying edge geometry in transiently turbulent shear flows

    In linearly stable shear flows at moderate Re, turbulence spontaneously decays despite the existence of a codimension-one manifold, termed the edge of chaos, which separates decaying perturbations from those triggering turbulence. We statistically analyse the decay in plane Couette flow, quantify the breaking of self-sustaining feedback loops and demonstrate the existence of a whole continuum of possible decay paths. Drawing parallels with low-dimensional models and monitoring the location of the edge relative to decaying trajectories we provide evidence, that the edge of chaos separates state space not globally. It is instead wrapped around the turbulence generating structures and not an independent dynamical structure but part of the chaotic saddle. Thereby, decaying trajectories need not cross the edge, but circumnavigate it while unwrapping from the turbulent saddle.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    Turbulent-laminar patterns in shear flows without walls

    Turbulent-laminar intermittency, typically in the form of bands and spots, is a ubiquitous feature of the route to turbulence in wall-bounded shear flows. Here we study the idealised shear between stress-free boundaries driven by a sinusoidal body force and demonstrate quantitative agreement between turbulence in this flow and that found in the interior of plane Couette flow -- the region excluding the boundary layers. Exploiting the absence of boundary layers, we construct a model flow that uses only four Fourier modes in the shear direction and yet robustly captures the range of spatiotemporal phenomena observed in transition, from spot growth to turbulent bands and uniform turbulence. The model substantially reduces the cost of simulating intermittent turbulent structures while maintaining the essential physics and a direct connection to the Navier-Stokes equations. We demonstrate the generic nature of this process by introducing stress-free equivalent flows for plane Poiseuille and pipe flows which again capture the turbulent-laminar structures seen in transition.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure

    COSMOGRAIL: the COSmological MOnitoring of GRAvItational Lenses X. Modeling based on high-precision astrometry of a sample of 25 lensed quasars: consequences for ellipticity, shear, and astrometric anomalies

    (abridged) Gravitationally lensed quasars can be used as powerful cosmological and astrophysical probes. We can (i) infer the Hubble constant based on the time-delay technique, (ii) unveil substructures along the l.o.s. toward distant galaxies, and (iii) compare the shape and the slope of baryons and dark matter distributions in galaxies. To reach these goals, we need high-accuracy astrometry and morphology measurements of the lens. In this work, we first present new astrometry for 11 lenses with measured time delays. Using MCS deconvolution on NIC2 HST images, we reached an astrometric accuracy of about 1-2.5 mas and an accurate shape measurement of the lens galaxy. Second, we combined these measurements with those of 14 other systems to present new mass models of these lenses. This led to the following results: 1) In 4 double-image quasars, we show that the influence of the lens environment on the time delay can easily be quantified and modeled, hence putting these lenses with high priority for time-delay determination. 2) For quadruple-image quasars, the difficulty often encountered in reproducing the image positions to milli-arcsec accuracy (astrometric anomaly) is overcome by explicitly including the nearest visible galaxy in the model. However, one anomalous system (J1131-1231) does not show any luminous perturber in its vicinity, and three others (WFI2026-4536, WFI2033-4723, and B2045+265) have problematic modeling. These 4 systems are the best candidates for a pertubation by a dark matter substructure. 3) We find a significant correlation between the PA of the light and of the mass distributions in lensing galaxies. In contrast with other studies, we find that the ellipticity of the light and of the mass also correlate well, suggesting that the overall spatial distribution of matter is not very different from the baryon distribution in the inner \sim 5 kpc of lensing galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics abridged abstrac

    TRAPPIST: a robotic telescope dedicated to the study of planetary systems

    We present here a new robotic telescope called TRAPPIST (TRAnsiting Planets and PlanetesImals Small Telescope). Equipped with a high-quality CCD camera mounted on a 0.6 meter light weight optical tube, TRAPPIST has been installed in April 2010 at the ESO La Silla Observatory (Chile), and is now beginning its scientific program. The science goal of TRAPPIST is the study of planetary systems through two approaches: the detection and study of exoplanets, and the study of comets. L'utilisation de plantes de couverture permet de combattre l'érosion, de maintenir la faune et la flore du sol, ainsi que de contrôler l'enherbement. C'est dans cette optique de durabilité que le CIRAD a mis en place des essais en Martinique avec Arachis pintoï comme plante de couverture d'un verger biologique d'agrumes, en considérant particulièrement les aspects économiques liés à son utilisation.     Infant Serum and Maternal Milk Vitamin B-12 Are Positively Correlated in Kenyan Infant-Mother Dyads at 1-6 Months Postpartum, Irrespective of Infant Feeding Practice.

    BackgroundVitamin B-12 is an essential nutrient required for many functions including DNA synthesis, erythropoiesis, and brain development. If maternal milk vitamin B-12 concentrations are low, infants may face elevated risks of deficiency when exclusively breastfed.ObjectiveWe evaluated cross-sectional associations between infant serum vitamin B-12 concentrations and maternal milk vitamin B-12 concentrations at 1-6 mo postpartum among an unsupplemented population in rural western Kenya, and assessed biological demographic, and dietary characteristics associated with adequate infant serum vitamin B-12.MethodsWe modeled 1) infant serum vitamin B-12 using maternal milk vitamin B-12 concentration with linear regression; and 2) adequate (>220 pmol/L) infant serum vitamin B-12 using hypothesized biological, demographic, and dietary predictors with logistic regression. In both models, we used generalized estimating equations to account for correlated observations at the cluster-level.ResultsThe median (quartile 1, quartile 3) infant serum vitamin B-12 concentration was 276 pmol/L (193, 399 pmol/L) and approximately one-third of infants had serum vitamin B-12 ≤220 pmol/L, indicating that they were vitamin B-12 depleted or deficient. There was a positive correlation between maternal milk and infant serum vitamin B-12 (r = 0.36, P < 0.001) and in multivariable analyses, maternal milk vitamin B-12 concentration was significantly associated with infant serum vitamin B-12 adequacy (P-trend = 0.03).ConclusionsDespite a high prevalence (90%) of maternal milk vitamin B-12 concentrations below the level used to establish the Adequate Intake (<310 pmol/L), there was a low prevalence of infant vitamin B-12 deficiency. We found few factors that were associated with infant vitamin B-12 adequacy in this population, including infant feeding practices, although maternal vitamin B-12 status was not measured. The contribution of maternal milk to infant vitamin B-12 status remains important to quantify across populations, given that maternal milk vitamin B-12 concentration is modifiable with supplementation.     COSMOGRAIL: the COSmological MOnitoring of GRAvItational Lenses IX. Time delays, lens dynamics and baryonic fraction in HE 0435-1223

    We present accurate time delays for the quadruply imaged quasar HE 0435-1223. The delays were measured from 575 independent photometric points obtained in the R-band between January 2004 and March 2010. With seven years of data, we clearly show that quasar image A is affected by strong microlensing variations and that the time delays are best expressed relative to quasar image B. We measured Delta_t(BC) = 7.8+/-0.8 days, Delta_t(BD) = -6.5+/-0.7 days and Delta_t_CD = -14.3+/-0.8 days. We spacially deconvolved HST NICMOS2 F160W images to derive accurate astrometry of the quasar images and to infer the light profile of the lensing galaxy. We combined these images with a stellar population fitting of a deep VLT spectrum of the lensing galaxy to estimate the baryonic fraction, fbf_b, in the Einstein radius. We measured f_b = 0.65+0.13-0.10 if the lensing galaxy has a Salpeter IMF and f_b = 0.45+0.04-0.07 if it has a Kroupa IMF. The spectrum also allowed us to estimate the velocity dispersion of the lensing galaxy, sigma_ap = 222+/-34 km/s. We used f_b and sigma_ap to constrain an analytical model of the lensing galaxy composed of an Hernquist plus generalized NFW profile. We solve the Jeans equations numerically for the model and explored the parameter space under the additional requirement that the model must predict the correct astrometry for the quasar images. Given the current error bars on f_b and sigma_ap, we did not constrain H0 yet with high accuracy, i.e., we found a broad range of models with chi^2 < 1. However, narrowing this range is possible, provided a better velocity dispersion measurement becomes available. In addition, increasing the depth of the current HST imaging data of HE 0435-1223 will allow us to combine our constraints with lens reconstruction techniques that make use of the full Einstein ring that is visible in this object.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, final version accepted for publication by A&

    Dans le cadre d'une agriculture durable préservant les ressources naturelles et respectueuse de l'environnement, l'utilisation de plantes de couverture adaptées aux conditions de culture en verger présente beaucoup d'intérêts. Elle permet de combattre l'érosion, de maintenir la faune et la flore du sol, de contrôler l'enherbement sans utilisation d'herbicide. C'est dans cette optique que l'Arachis pintoï, variété Amarillo, originaire du Brésil, a été introduite dans différents pays (U.S.A, Australie, Japon...). Il est intéressant de faire un bilan des essais menés au Cirad-Flhor en Martinique sur cette plante, en considérant particulièrement les aspects économiques liés à son utilisation. (Résumé d'auteur
