The decreasing returns on working time: An empirical analysis on panel country data
An empirical analysis is conducted on two panels of 18 OECD countries to test whether the elasticity of hourly productivity to working time is negative and decreasing with working time itself. If so, the decreasing returns on working time could be indicative of a fatigue effect that increases with working time. We find that the elasticity of productivity per hour to working time is negative and decreasing with working time, but its coefficient is not strongly significant. This study offers empirical support for the hypothesis of a fatigue effect that increases with working time, but with some reservations.Productivity, Working time, decreasing returns.
Unitary Fermi Gas in a Harmonic Trap
We present an {\it ab initio} calculation of small numbers of trapped,
strongly interacting fermions using the Green's Function Monte Carlo method
(GFMC). The ground state energy, density profile and pairing gap are calculated
for particle numbers using the parameter-free "unitary"
interaction. Trial wave functions are taken of the form of correlated pairs in
a harmonic oscillator basis. We find that the lowest energies are obtained with
a minimum explicit pair correlation beyond that needed to exploit the
degeneracy of oscillator states. We find that energies can be well fitted by
the expression where is the
Thomas-Fermi energy of a noninteracting gas in the trap and is a
pairing gap. There is no evidence of a shell correction energy in the
systematics, but the density distributions show pronounced shell effects. We
find the value for the pairing gap. This is smaller
than the value found for the uniform gas at a density corresponding to the
central density of the trapped gas.Comment: 2 figures, 2 table

Computational structures for robotic computations
The computational problem of inverse kinematics and inverse dynamics of robot manipulators by taking advantage of parallelism and pipelining architectures is discussed. For the computation of inverse kinematic position solution, a maximum pipelined CORDIC architecture has been designed based on a functional decomposition of the closed-form joint equations. For the inverse dynamics computation, an efficient p-fold parallel algorithm to overcome the recurrence problem of the Newton-Euler equations of motion to achieve the time lower bound of O(log sub 2 n) has also been developed
Anomalous Rashba spin-orbit interaction in InAs/GaSb quantum wells
We investigate theoretically the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in InAs/GaSb
quantum wells(QWs). We find that the Rashba spin-splitting (RSS) depends
sensitively on the thickness of the InAs layer. The RSS exhibits nonlinear
behavior for narrow InAs/GaSb QWs and the oscillating feature for wide
InAs/GaSb QWs. The nonlinear and oscillating behaviors arise from the weakened
and enhanced interband coupling. The RSS also show asymmetric features respect
to the direction of the external electric field.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures. Appl. Phys. Lett. (in press
Spin-dependent tunneling through a symmetric semiconductor barrier: the Dresselhaus effect
Spin-dependent tunneling through a symmetric semiconductor barrier is studied
including the k^3 Dresselhaus effect. The spin-dependent transmission of
electron can be obtained analytically. By comparing with previous work(Phys.
Rev. B 67. R201304 (2003) and Phys. Rev. Lett. 93. 056601 (2004)), it is shown
that the spin polarization and interface current are changed significantly by
including the off-diagonal elements in the current operator, and can be
enhanced considerably by the Dresselhaus effect in the contact regions.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, to appear in PR
Rank-ordered Multifractal Spectrum for Intermittent Fluctuations
We describe a new method that is both physically explicable and
quantitatively accurate in describing the multifractal characteristics of
intermittent events based on groupings of rank-ordered fluctuations. The
generic nature of such rank-ordered spectrum leads it to a natural connection
with the concept of one-parameter scaling for monofractals. We demonstrate this
technique using results obtained from a 2D MHD simulation. The calculated
spectrum suggests a crossover from the near Gaussian characteristics of small
amplitude fluctuations to the extreme intermittent state of large rare events.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Assessing the drivers of online impulse buying
Given the rapidly growing popularity of online impulse buying using digital and social media platforms, it has raised important interests about the antecedents of such consumer behaviour. Data analysis was conducted using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. The results from a survey of 310 online buyers suggest that trust holds the strongest correlation with the experiential value. This study provides new insights for marketing literature and online retailers
