Dependence of GCRs influx on the Solar North-South Asymmetry

We investigate the dependence of the amount of the observed galactic cosmic ray (GCR) influx on the solar North-South asymmetry using the neutron count rates obtained from four stations and sunspot data in archives spanning six solar cycles from 1953 to 2008. We find that the observed GCR influxes at Moscow, Kiel, Climax and Huancayo stations are more suppressed when the solar activity in the southern hemisphere is dominant compared with when the solar activity in the northern hemisphere is dominant. Its reduction rates at four stations are all larger than those of the suppression due to other factors including the solar polarity effect on the GCR influx. We perform the student's t-test to see how significant these suppressions are. It is found that suppressions due to the solar North-South asymmetry as well as the solar polarity are significant and yet the suppressions associated with the former are larger and more significant.Comment: 17 pages, 3figures, accepted to JAST

Elimination of Chrysanthemum stunt viroid (CSVd) from Meristem Tip Culture Combined with Prolonged Cold Treatment

Chrysanthemum production in Korea has recently been greatly affected by the spread of Chrysanthemum stunt viroid (CSVd) infection, necessitating the use of CSVd-free stocks to ensure successful chrysanthemum cultivation. We investigated the effects of low temperature (4°C), antiviral chemicals (ribavirin and amantadine) and a combination of these treatments on CSVd elimination by meristem tip cultures using plantlets that originated from CSVd-infected chrysanthemum ‘Ency’. Neither antiviral agents led to CSVd elimination, despite the suppression of meristem tip growth in a concentration dependent manner. However, the CSVd elimination rate increased up to 42.8% when meristem tips were excised after storage at 4°C for two months. The most effective results were obtained from a combination of low temperature for three months at 4°C followed by meristem tip culture on media containing 50 and 100 mgL-1 ribavirin. These results suggest that antiviral agents can also be useful for CSVd elimination if their treatment is combined with prolonged periods of low temperature. This is the first report of eradication of viroids from spray type chrysanthemum bred in Korea

Background and aims: the role of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in prevention of early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) in young adults under 50 years is uncertain. We evaluated the age-stratified associations (<50 vs. ≥50 years) :circulating 25(OH)D levels and the risk of CRC in a large sample of Korean adults. Methods: our cohort study included 236,382 participants (mean [standard deviation] age, 38.0 [9.0] years) who underwent a comprehensive health examination, including measurement of serum 25(OH)D levels. Serum 25(OH)D levels were categorized as follows: <10, 10–20, and ≥20 ng/mL. CRC, along with the histologic subtype, site, and invasiveness was ascertained through linkage with the national cancer registry. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs; 95% confidence intervals [CIs]) for incident CRC according to the serum 25(OH)D status, with adjustment for potential confounders. Results: during the 1,393,741 person-years of follow-up (median, 6.5 years; interquartile range, 4.5–7.5 years), 341 participants developed CRC (incidence rate, 19.2 per 105 person-years). Among young individuals aged <50 years, serum 25(OH)D levels were inversely associated with the risk of incident CRC with HRs (95% CIs) of 0.61 (0.43–0.86) and 0.41 (0.27–0.63) for 25(OH)D 10-19 and ≥20 ng/mL, respectively, with respect to the reference (<10 ng/mL) (p for trend <0.001, time-dependent model). Significant associations were evident for adenocarcinoma, colon cancer, and invasive cancers. For those aged ≥50 years, associations were similar, although slightly attenuated compared to younger individuals. Conclusions: serum 25(OH)D levels may have beneficial associations with the risk of developing CRC for both early-onset and late-onset disease. <br/

Satellite-borne sea surface temperature and sea surface height data, and in-situ temperature profiles have been assimilated into the DA-ESROM. The performance of the DA-ESROM appears to be efficient enough to be used in an operational ocean forecast system. Comparing with the results from Mitchell et al. (2005a), the DA-ESROM fairly well simulates the high variability of the Ulleung Warm Eddy and Dok Cold Eddy as well as the branching of the Tsushima Warm Current in the UB. The overall root-mean-square error between 100m temperature field reproduced by the DA-ESROM and the observed 100-dbar temperature field is 2.1°C, and the spatially averaged grid-to-grid correlation between the two temperature fields is high with a mean value of 0.79 for the intercomparison period. The DA-ESROM reproduces the development of strong southward North Korean Cold Current (NKCC) in summer consistent with the observational results, which is thought to be an improvement of the previous numerical models in the EJS. The reanalyzed products show that the NKCC is about 35 km wide, and flows southward along the Korean coast from spring to summer with maximum monthly mean volume transport of about 0.8 Sv in August-September.The major part of this works was conducted with financial support by Agency for Defense Development under the contract UD031003AD. BACKGROUND: To observe brain activation induced by functional electrical stimulation, voluntary contraction, and the combination of both using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: Nineteen healthy young men were enrolled in the study. We employed a typical block design that consisted of three sessions: voluntary contraction only, functional electrical stimulation (FES)-induced wrist extension, and finally simultaneous voluntary and FES-induced movement. MRI acquisition was performed on a 3.0 T MR system. To investigate activation in each session, one-sample t-tests were performed after correcting for false discovery rate (FDR; p < 0.05). To compare FES-induced movement and combined contraction, a two-sample t-test was performed using a contrast map (p < 0.01). RESULTS: In the voluntary contraction alone condition, brain activation was observed in the contralateral primary motor cortex (MI), thalamus, bilateral supplementary motor area (SMA), primary sensory cortex (SI), secondary somatosensory motor cortex (SII), caudate, and cerebellum (mainly ipsilateral). During FES-induced wrist movement, brain activation was observed in the contralateral MI, SI, SMA, thalamus, ipsilateral SII, and cerebellum. During FES-induced movement combined with voluntary contraction, brain activation was found in the contralateral MI, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), SMA, ipsilateral cerebellum, bilateral SII, and SI. The activated brain regions (number of voxels) of the MI, SI, cerebellum, and SMA were largest during voluntary contraction alone and smallest during FES alone. SII-activated brain regions were largest during voluntary contraction combined with FES and smallest during FES contraction alone. The brain activation extent (maximum t score) of the MI, SI, and SII was largest during voluntary contraction alone and smallest during FES alone. The brain activation extent of the cerebellum and SMA during voluntary contraction alone was similar during FES combined with voluntary contraction; however, cerebellum and SMA activation during FES movement alone was smaller than that of voluntary contraction alone or voluntary contraction combined with FES. Between FES movement alone and combined contraction, activated regions and extent due to combined contraction was significantly higher than that of FES movement alone in the ipsilateral cerebellum and the contralateral MI and SI. CONCLUSIONS: Voluntary contraction combined with FES may be more effective for brain activation than FES-only movements for rehabilitation therapy. In addition, voluntary effort is the most important factor in the therapeutic process

Abstract

Background

The antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles has resulted in their extensive application in health, electronic, consumer, medicinal, pesticide, and home products; however, silver nanoparticles remain a controversial area of research with respect to their toxicity in biological and ecological systems.

Results

This study tested the oral toxicity of silver nanoparticles (56 nm) over a period of 13 weeks (90 days) in F344 rats following Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) test guideline 408 and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). Five-week-old rats, weighing about 99 g for the males and 92 g for the females, were divided into four 4 groups (10 rats in each group): vehicle control, low-dose (30 mg/kg), middle-dose (125 mg/kg), and high-dose (500 mg/kg). After 90 days of exposure, clinical chemistry, hematology, histopathology, and silver distribution were studied. There was a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in the body weight of male rats after 4 weeks of exposure, although there were no significant changes in food or water consumption during the study period. Significant dose-dependent changes were found in alkaline phosphatase and cholesterol for the male and female rats, indicating that exposure to more than 125 mg/kg of silver nanoparticles may result in slight liver damage. Histopathologic examination revealed a higher incidence of bile-duct hyperplasia, with or without necrosis, fibrosis, and/or pigmentation, in treated animals. There was also a dose-dependent accumulation of silver in all tissues examined. A gender-related difference in the accumulation of silver was noted in the kidneys, with a twofold increase in female kidneys compared to male kidneys.

Conclusions

The target organ for the silver nanoparticles was found to be the liver in both the male and female rats. A NOAEL (no observable adverse effect level) of 30 mg/kg and LOAEL (lowest observable adverse effect level) of 125 mg/kg are suggested from the present study.</p

Performance-Based Evaluation of a Double-Deck Tunnel and Design Optimization

    Get PDF
The double-deck tunnel is well known as smart infrastructure because multiple sections can be used for various purposes. Although the stability of a double-deck tunnel is mainly governed by the intermediate slab, the effect of various governing factors on tunnel structural stability has not been fully investigated. In this study, performance-based evaluation method for a double-deck tunnel is suggested as a three-dimensional matrix considering the life cycle of a double-deck tunnel. Moreover, a customized software for design and maintenance of a double-deck tunnel is developed. A structural analysis solver based on a beam–spring model for a double-deck tunnel was embedded in this code. The effects of connection type as well as depth of tunnel, ground stiffness and traffic load on structural behavior of tunnel were investigated. From the analysis, it was found that the connection type between segment lining and intermediate slab significantly affects the behavior of segment lining: simply connected condition causes lesser stress and moment than fully fixed condition. The deeper the tunnel depth, the greater the member force of segment lining. In addition, as both the tunnel depth and the ground stiffness increase, the influence of connection type on the structural stability of the double-deck tunnel becomes insignificant

Structural and optical properties of position-retrievable low-density GaAs droplet epitaxial quantum dots for application to single photon sources with plasmonic optical coupling

    Get PDF
The position of a single GaAs quantum dot (QD), which is optically active, grown by low-density droplet epitaxy (DE) (approximately 4 QDs/μm2), was directly observed on the surface of a 45-nm-thick Al0.3Ga0.7As capping layer. The thin thickness of AlGaAs capping layer is useful for single photon sources with plasmonic optical coupling. A micro-photoluminescence for GaAs DE QDs has shown exciton/biexciton behavior in the range of 1.654 to 1.657 eV. The direct observation of positions of low-density GaAs DE QDs would be advantageous for mass fabrication of devices that use a single QD, such as single photon sources.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Observation of near-inertial wave reflections within the thermostad layer of an anticyclonic mesoscale eddy

The definitive version was published in Geophysical Research Letters 37 (2010): L01606, doi:10.1029/2009GL041601.Moored current observations in the southwestern East/Japan Sea of 16.5 months duration clearly captured two episodes of downward phase propagation (upward energy propagation) of near-inertial waves (NIWs). Time series of temperature and velocity from the mooring and ancillary information indicate that the mooring was located near the center of an anticyclonic eddy during these events. Considering the typical vertical structure of quasi-permanent eddy features in the region, the observed downward phase propagation appeared to occur within the seasonal thermocline and upper thermostad of the anticyclonic mesoscale eddy. Ray tracing simulation of NIW using the observed subinertial currents suggests that the upward energy propagation is caused by the reflection of the NIWs within the thermostad of the anticyclonic eddy, where the effect of the vertical shear of subinertial horizontal currents is larger than the buoyancy effect in controlling the propagation of NIWs.This work was supported by grants from the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs (Ocean Climate Variability Program), and the US NSF, grant OCE-0647949 to RWS

Meteorological characteristics and assessment of the effect of local emissions during high PM10 concentration in the Seoul Metropolitan Area

    Get PDF
In this study, we investigate the meteorological characteristics and the effect of local emissions during high PM10 concentrations in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) by utilizing data from a high-resolution urban meteorological observation system network (UMS-Seoul) and The Air Pollution Model (TAPM). For a detailed analysis, days with PM10 concentrations higher than 80 ??g m-3 for daily average PM10 concentration (classified as unhealthy by the Korean Ministry of Environment) in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) were classified into 3 Cases. Case I was defined as when the prevailing effect was from outside the SMA. Case II was defined as when the prevailing effect was a local effect with outside. Case III was defined as when the prevailing effect was local. Overall, high PM10 concentrations in the SMA mostly occurred under weak migratory anticyclone systems over the Korean Peninsula during warm temperatures. Prior to the PM10 concentration reaching the peak concentration, the pattern in each case was distinctive. After peak concentrations, however, the pattern for the 3 cases became less distinct. This study showed that nearly 50% of the high PM10 concentrations in the SMA occurred in spring and were governed by the conditions for Case II more than these for Cases I and III. In spring, the main sources of the high PM10 concentrations in the SMA were local emissions due to the predominance of weak winds and local circulation. The simulation showed that the non-SMA emissions were about 63 to 73% contribution to the spring high PM10 concentrations in the SMA. Specifically, local point sources including industrial combustion, electric utility, incineration and cement production facilities scattered around the SMA and could account for PM10 concentrations more than 10 ??g m-3 in the SMA
