In vitro permeation of progesterone from a gel through the shed skin of three different snake species

    Get PDF
The in vitro diffusion of progesterone from a gel formulation using the European Pharmacopoeia method for transdermal dosage forms is described. The membranes used were the dorsal and ventral portions of the shed skin of three different species of snake. Considerable differences are apparent between the dorsal and ventral sites and between the different species of snake. The dorsal area shows better permeability for progesterone and the permeability order for the different species is python>cobra>viper. These differences may be due to the thickness of the skin and the hinge:scale ratio. The results indicate that shed snake skin is not a model membrane for human skin

Towards a spatial decision support system for animal traceability.

This section presents the contributions of our work to the problems of bovine traceability and contact between animals using trajectory database concepts. This section describes how to delimitate problems and how to represent animal movements as trajectories. Afterwards, the algorithms for the identification of contacts between animals are presented for the calculation of contamination probabilities. In this work we define contamination algorithms for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). FMD is a highly contagious disease that attacks all cleft-hoofed animals, mainly bovines. It occurs at all ages, regardless of sex, breed, climate, etc. The virus spreads by direct contact of animals as well as through the air, water and food.Contrato nÂș 43134

A new WPAN Model for NS-3 simulator

    Get PDF
International audienceWireless sensor networks are one of the most challenging topics in research world due to the nature of the wireless communication and the constraints related to the sensor’s components. However, this field knows a very fast progress and new technologies are involved. One of the hottest trends of the future WSN is the I/WoT ‘Internet/Web of Things’. For the wireless medium access and radio transmission (MAC and PHY), I/WoT has chosen the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Some researchers have proposed simulation models to analyze this standard in different simulation environment. In this paper we propose a new WPAN model for the NS-3 simulator. This model implements most of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard feature and modes of operations. Furthermore, a 6LoWPAN Model is used to incorporate the IEEE 802.15.4 into the IPv6 architecture by interfacing the IPv6 model of NS-3 with our new IEEE 802.15.4 standard model. Thus, we believe that this WPAN work can be seen as a foundation for future I/WoT simulation on NS-3

A mitochondrial mutator plasmid that causes senescence under dietary restricted conditions

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Calorie or dietary restriction extends life span in a wide range of organisms including the filamentous fungus Podospora anserina. Under dietary restricted conditions, P. anserina isolates are several-fold longer lived. This is however not the case in isolates that carry one of the pAL2-1 homologous mitochondrial plasmids. RESULTS: We show that the pAL2-1 homologues act as 'insertional mutators' of the mitochondrial genome, which may explain their negative effect on life span extension. Sequencing revealed at least fourteen unique plasmid integration sites, of which twelve were located within the mitochondrial genome and two within copies of the plasmid itself. The plasmids were able to integrate in their entirety, via a non-homologous mode of recombination. Some of the integrated plasmid copies were truncated, which probably resulted from secondary, post-integrative, recombination processes. Integration sites were predominantly located within and surrounding the region containing the mitochondrial rDNA loci. CONCLUSION: We propose a model for the mechanism of integration, based on innate modes of mtDNA recombination, and discuss its possible link with the plasmid's negative effect on dietary restriction mediated life span extension

A Newly Identified Essential Complex, Dre2-Tah18, Controls Mitochondria Integrity and Cell Death after Oxidative Stress in Yeast

A mutated allele of the essential gene TAH18 was previously identified in our laboratory in a genetic screen for new proteins interacting with the DNA polymerase delta in yeast [1]. The present work shows that Tah18 plays a role in response to oxidative stress. After exposure to lethal doses of H2O2, GFP-Tah18 relocalizes to the mitochondria and controls mitochondria integrity and cell death. Dre2, an essential Fe/S cluster protein and homologue of human anti-apoptotic Ciapin1, was identified as a molecular partner of Tah18 in the absence of stress. Moreover, Ciapin1 is able to replace yeast Dre2 in vivo and physically interacts with Tah18. Our results are in favour of an oxidative stress-induced cell death in yeast that involves mitochondria and is controlled by the newly identified Dre2-Tah18 complex
