    Security Architecture for Tanzania Higher Learning Institutions’ Data Warehouse

    In this paper we developed security architecture for the higher learning institutions in Tanzania which considers security measures to be taken at different level of the higher learning institutions’ data warehouse architecture. The primary objectives of the study was to identify security requirements of the higher learning institutions data warehouses and then study the existing security systems in and finally develop and architecture based on the requirements extracted from the study. The study was carried at three different universities in Tanzania by carrying out interviews, study of the existing systems in respective institutions and a literature review of the existing data warehouses systems and architectures. The result was the security requirements identified which lead to the development of the security architecture comprising security in source systems, data, and services to be offered by the DW, applications which use DW, networks and other physical infrastructure focusing on security controls like authentication, role-based access control, role separation of privileged users, storage of data, secure transfer of data, protective monitoring/ intrusion detection, penetration testing, trusted/secure endpoints and physical protection.     Predictive Behavior of a Computational Foot/Ankle Model through Artificial Neural Networks

    Computational models are useful tools to study the biomechanics of human joints. Their predictive performance is heavily dependent on bony anatomy and soft tissue properties. Imaging data provides anatomical requirements while approximate tissue properties are implemented from literature data, when available. We sought to improve the predictive capability of a computational foot/ankle model by optimizing its ligament stiffness inputs using feedforward and radial basis function neural networks. While the former demonstrated better performance than the latter per mean square error, both networks provided reasonable stiffness predictions for implementation into the computational model

    Do primary care placements influence career choice: What is the evidence?

    BACKGROUND: The NHS is struggling with GP recruitment. The Health Education England (HEE) Wass Report (By Choice not by Chance), among its recommendations to boost GP numbers, highlighted undergraduate (UG) GP placement experience as an important influence on future career choice. AIM: To explore the UG influences on GP career choice. METHODS: Two junior doctors produced a pragmatic rapid appraisal of the literature on the UG influences on GP career choice for the Wass Report. The search strategy was supported by librarians and focused on rapidly accessing and summarising relevant literature. Databases searched, including Medline, EMBASE, HMIC & grey literature, revealed 294 items. Data extraction and synthesis was pragmatic. RESULTS: The international evidence suggests that UG GP experience can positively influence students towards a primary care career. Longitudinal placements are more influential than traditional blocks. UK literature is limited, but there are consistencies with the international evidence. The relevant studies identified are observational with risk of bias, but this is unavoidable within this research context. DISCUSSION: The implications of these results for medical school curricula are discussed with particular reference to Government plans to expand medical student numbers and establish new medical schools with explicit aims to produce more GPs

    Remote monitoring and discrete data capture of joint pain and other parameters via the NokiaN900 device: Enhancing patient/physician interaction

    The new generation cellular phones have multi-functional capabilities such as imaging, video, audio recording and messaging in addition to providing internet access. In this paper we present an innovative application in the field of remote health monitoring using N900 Nokia tablet, which will serve as a communicating device between the patient and healthcare providers like doctors and nurses. Patients with arthritis require regular objective monitoring of their affected joints by healthcare providers requiring that patients report their subjective pain levels to their physicians. The application has a patient's module allowing the patient to select their pain level on a sliding scale from a graphical representation of various human joints and send this as an SMS to the doctor. The healthcare providers can review the pain level, save it to a database and make an informed decision about possible recommendations based on the data received via SMS. The doctor's module allows the doctor to capture all the attributes of an affected joint discretely using the graphical representation of the joints and associated dialog boxes. The complete Graphical User Interface (GUI) development and data base design are discussed and test cases are presented. We plan to evaluate the application in a real healthcare environment for usability, its role in improving patient satisfaction and health outcomes
