In Vivo Effect of a Nisin–Biogel on the Antimicrobial and Virulence Signatures of Canine Oral Enterococci
Research Areas: Infectious Diseases ; Pharmacology & PharmacyABSTRACT - Periodontal disease is a relevant oral disease in dogs and nisin–biogel has been previously
proposed to be used in its control. Enterococci, as inhabitants of the oral cavity with a high genetic
versatility, are a reliable bacterial model for antimicrobial studies. Our goal was to evaluate the in vivo
influence of the long-term dental application of the nisin–biogel on the virulence and antimicrobial
signatures of canine oral enterococci. Twenty dogs were randomly allocated to one of two groups
(treatment group—TG with nisin–biogel dental application, or control group—CG without treatment)
and submitted to dental plaque sampling at day 0 and after 90 days (T90). Samples were processed
for Enterococcus spp. isolation, quantification, identification, molecular typing and antimicrobial and
virulence characterization. From a total of 140 enterococci, molecular typing allowed us to obtain
70 representative isolates, mostly identified as E. faecalis and E. faecium. No significant differences
(p > 0.05) were observed in the virulence index of the isolates obtained from samples collected from
the TG and CG at T90. At T90, a statistically significant difference (p = 0.0008) was observed in
the antimicrobial resistance index between the isolates from the TC and CG. Oral enterococci were
revealed to be reservoirs of high resistant and virulent phenotypesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
famĂlia e os que nĂŁo pedem.ABSTRACT: In Portugal, deliberate self-harm are increasingly common among adolescents. This
study aims to understand the impact of the roles associated with self-injurious behaviors on the
severity and diversity of these behaviors. It also aims to understand how family functioning
variables (e.g., communication and conflicts) influence the trajectory and development of these
behaviors, as well as the intentions of these young people to ask for help. The sample consisted
of 358 participants aged between 12 and 22 years old, from three schools in the district of
SetĂşbal, to whom the following instruments were applied: FACES IV, Family Climate
Inventory, Inventory of Deliberate Self- Harm Behaviours, Help-Seeking Questionnaire of
Representations about the Functions of Deliberate Self-Harm for Adolescents and
Sociodemographic Questionnaire. The most notable results show that intrapersonal functions
contribute to increased severity and diversity. There were also differences in communication
and family conflicts between adolescents who practice deliberate self-harm and those who do
not. Communication and Conflicts show significant correlations with method severity and
diversity. Additionally, help-seeking is associated only with family variables, more
specifically, the study found differences in family communication between adolescents who
ask the family for help and those who do not
The inclusion of students with Special Educational Needs in current school is based on democratic principles of social justice and equal opportunities by providing the right to education to all students regardless the problems they demonstrate.
This present study aims to collect, analyze, understand, and objectify the perceptions of teachers of Visual Education and Technical Education (2nd cycle) in terms of supporting students with EEN before and after the extinction of the teaching pair . The research strategy followed the qualitative methodology, using the interview. The research involved a limited number of respondents (EV and ET teachers that teach in schools of Minho) to obtain, objective and credible responses, with respect to the inclusion of pupils with EEN in the discipline of EV and ET and the difficulty or not to support these students with and without pedagogical pair.
The results arising from this research study, lead to conclude that the teachers interviewed believe the discipline of EV and ET is beneficial for students with EEN. When referring to the teaching pair they underlined their non- agreement with its extinction, because the kind of work and even the type of material and teaching resources that are used during classes requires a more individualized support, especially for pupils with EEN, so it was easier and more intensive the support for pupils with EEN, when existed the pedagogical pair

Freezing injury in primary and secondary needles of Mediterranean pine species of contrasting ecological niches
• Pine seedlings show a marked ontogenetic difference between
primary and secondary needles, the latter prevailing with a different timing
among species.
• Using the electrolyte leakage method following an artificial
freezing test, we aimed at (1) determining the differences in freezing
tolerance between primary and secondary needles in eight pines of
contrasting thermal habitats: P. canariensis, P. pinea, P. halepensis, P. brutia, P. pinaster, P. nigra, P. sylvestris and P. radiata, (2) evaluating the relation
between freezing tolerance and sclerophylly and (3) relating freezing
tolerance with the climate of origin.
• Primary needles were significantly more sensitive to freezing
than secondary needles in Pinus halepensis, P. brutia, P. pinaster and P. nigra, whereas no differences were found in
P. canariensis, P. pinea and P. radiata. LT50 was uncorrelated with needle sclerophylly but very highly
correlated with the mean temperature of the coldest month at the seed
source.
• Results support an adaptive role of secondary needles in the
mountain Mediterranean pines P. nigra, P. pinaster and P. brutia, while the more complex responses in
coastal Mediterranean pines can be interpreted in the light of seedling
Biomass allocation and foliage heteroblasty in hard pine species respond differentially to reduction in rooting volume
Rooting space is considered as a resource in plants, but comparative studies on the biomass allocation plasticity in response to rooting volume (RV) are rare. We compared responses in growth, biomass allocation and ontogenetic heteroblasty in nine hard pine species of contrasted ecology. Seedlings were cultivated in containers of 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.8 and 7 L for two growing seasons (425 days). Reduction in RV caused a reduction in plant absolute and relative growth rate and biomass allocated to stems but it increased biomass allocated to roots. RV affected to a lesser extent and in a less consistent direction allocation to leaves. Species that grew faster (higher relative growth rate) had a steeper decrease in growth with the reduction in RV. Ontogenetic heteroblasty, evaluated as the proportion of secondary needles in the needle biomass, showed highly different plasticity patterns in response to RV. Decrease in RV caused negligible or no change either in the most ontogenetically delayed Mediterranean pines or in the most ontogenetically advanced pines, the mesic Pinus sylvestris and P. uncinata. By contrast, ontogenetically intermediate species showed steep reaction norms in response to reduction in RV. While P. pinaster and P. brutia showed marked rejuvenation, P. nigra accelerated the development of adult foliage. © 2011 Springer-Verlag

The role of maternal age, growth, and environment in shaping offspring performance in an aerial conifer seed bank
11 Pág.Maternal effects have been demonstrated to affect offspring performance in many organisms, and in plants, seeds are important mediators of these effects. Some woody plant species maintain long-lasting canopy seed banks as an adaptation to wildfires. Importantly, these seeds stored in serotinous cones are produced by the mother plant under varying ontogenetic and physiological conditions. This research was supported by the Spanish Government via the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU) grants AGL2015-68274-C03-1-R and RTI2018-094691-B-C32 and by a predoctoral research fellowship from the Spanish MICIU (BES-2016-077347).Peer reviewe
