The generic context sharing protocol GCSP : Application to signaling in a cross-network and multi-provider environment

This paper proposes a new signaling paradigm and a new signaling protocol called the Generic Context Sharing Protocol (GCSP) for the construction of a global control plane over present and future communication networks. After identifying the special nature of the control plane software involved in the setup of a conversational service instance it examines the various mechanisms for information sharing which leads to our new proposal. We show that this new data-based protocol is better suited to control plane requirements than the present day’s command-oriented signaling mechanisms. We indicate the basic principles of the protocol and we give a brief description of the generic context. We show the place of this proposal in the present day research efforts and we mention a practical implementation case.8th IFIP/IEEE International conference on Mobile and Wireless CommunicationRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

Achieving multi-provider and cross-network services is a difficult and expensive problem today. The objective of our thesis is to simplify the realization of such services, for this reason we proposed new control plane mechanisms. In a first part we present a new theoretical framework for the concepts of the control plan. Then in 2nd part we identify the difficulties of achieving multi-provider and cross-network services. Then we show that one of the origins of these difficulties comes from the cooperative nature of the control plane which poses problems that we identify. This precision of the origin of the difficulties allowed us in a 3rd part, to understand that the current mechanisms of signaling are not optimal for the requirements of the control plane. Thus we propose a change of paradigm for signaling more adapted to the control plane requirements. In the 4th part, in order to implement this new signaling, we propose a new generic method to structure the data of the local context which we call the Generic Context. In the 5th part, we propose a new signaling protocol that we call the Generic Context Sharing Protocol (GCSP). GCSP implements the new signaling paradigm. Finally, in the 6th part, in order to show the validity of our approach, we implement it in an industrial product. Thus we propose a new Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) architecture and signaling mediators which solves several technical and financial constraints from which the old CTI architecture suffered
