The band spectrum of periodic potentials with PT-symmetry
A real band condition is shown to exist for one dimensional periodic complex
non-hermitian potentials exhibiting PT-symmetry. We use an exactly solvable
ultralocal periodic potential to obtain the band structure and discuss some
spectral features of the model, specially those concerning the role of the
imaginary parameters of the couplings. Analytical results as well as some
numerical examples are provided.Comment: 14 pages, 19 included figures (13 coloured). Submitted to J. Phys.
An amplitude-phase (Ermakov-Lewis) approach for the Jackiw-Pi model of bilayer graphene
In the context of bilayer graphene we use the simple gauge model of Jackiw
and Pi to construct its numerical solutions in powers of the bias potential V
according to a general scheme due to Kravchenko. Next, using this numerical
solutions, we develop the Ermakov-Lewis approach for the same model. This leads
us to numerical calculations of the Lewis-Riesenfeld phases that could be of
forthcoming experimental interest for bilayer graphene. We also present a
generalization of the Ioffe-Korsch nonlinear Darboux transformationComment: FTC, 11 pp, 5 figure
Esquemes argumentatius i coneixement científic.
“In medio stat virtus”: Insights into hybrid E/M phenotype attitudes
Epithelial-mesenchymal plasticity (EMP) refers to the ability of cells to dynamically interconvert between epithelial (E) and mesenchymal (M) phenotypes, thus generating an array of hybrid E/M intermediates with mixed E and M features. Recent findings have demonstrated how these hybrid E/M rather than fully M cells play key roles in most of physiological and pathological processes involving EMT. To this regard, the onset of hybrid E/M state coincides with the highest stemness gene expression and is involved in differentiation of either normal and cancer stem cells. Moreover, hybrid E/M cells are responsible for wound healing and create a favorable immunosuppressive environment for tissue regeneration. Nevertheless, hybrid state is responsible of metastatic process and of the increasing of survival, apoptosis and therapy resistance in cancer cells. The present review aims to describe the main features and the emerging concepts regulating EMP and the formation of E/M hybrid intermediates by describing differences and similarities between cancer and normal hybrid stem cells. In particular, the comprehension of hybrid E/M cells biology will surely advance our understanding of their features and how they could be exploited to improve tissue regeneration and repair
Two-Dimensional Electron Gas in InGaAs/InAlAs Quantum Wells
We designed and performed low temperature DC transport characterization
studies on two-dimensional electron gases confined in lattice-matched
InGaAs/InAlAs quantum wells grown by
molecular beam epitaxy on InP substrates. The nearly constant mobility for
samples with the setback distance larger than 50nm and the similarity between
the quantum and transport life-time suggest that the main scattering mechanism
is due to short range scattering, such as alloy scattering, with a scattering
rate of 2.2 ps. We also obtain the Fermi level at the
InGaAs/InAlAs surface to be 0.36eV above
the conduction band, when fitting our experimental densities with a
Poisson-Schr\"odinger model.Comment: Accepted in Applied Physics Letter
SU(1,1) symmetry of multimode squeezed states
We show that a class of multimode optical transformations that employ linear
optics plus two-mode squeezing can be expressed as SU(1,1) operators. These
operations are relevant to state-of-the-art continuous variable quantum
information experiments including quantum state sharing, quantum teleportation,
and multipartite entangled states. Using this SU(1,1) description of these
transformations, we obtain a new basis for such transformations that lies in a
useful representation of this group and lies outside the often-used restriction
to Gaussian states. We analyze this basis, show its application to a class of
transformations, and discuss its extension to more general quantum optical
networks
Functionalised poly (vinyl alcohol)/graphene oxide as polymer composite electrolyte membranes
Crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based composite films were prepared as polyelectrolyte membranes for low temperature direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFC). The membranes were functionalised by means of the addition of graphene oxide (GO) and sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO) and crosslinked with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA). The chemical structure was corroborated and suitable thermal properties were found. Although the addition of GO and SGO slightly decreased the proton conductivity of the membranes, a significant reduction of the ethanol solution swelling and crossover was encountered, more relevant for those functionalised with SGO. In general, the composite membranes were stable under simulated service conditions. The addition of GO and SGO particles permitted to buffer the loss and almost retain similar proton conductivity than prior to immersion. These membranes are alternative polyelectrolytes, which overcome current concerns of actual commercial membranes such as the high cost or the crossover phenomenon
Application of Pseudo-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics to a Complex Scattering Potential with Point Interactions
We present a generalization of the perturbative construction of the metric
operator for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with more than one perturbation
parameter. We use this method to study the non-Hermitian scattering
Hamiltonian: H=p^2/2m+\zeta_-\delta(x+a)+\zeta_+\delta(x-a), where \zeta_\pm
and a are respectively complex and real parameters and \delta(x) is the Dirac
delta function. For regions in the space of coupling constants \zeta_\pm where
H is quasi-Hermitian and there are no complex bound states or spectral
singularities, we construct a (positive-definite) metric operator \eta and the
corresponding equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian h. \eta turns out to be a
(perturbatively) bounded operator for the cases that the imaginary part of the
coupling constants have opposite sign, \Im(\zeta_+) = -\Im(\zeta_-). This in
particular contains the PT-symmetric case: \zeta_+ = \zeta_-^*. We also
calculate the energy expectation values for certain Gaussian wave packets to
study the nonlocal nature of \rh or equivalently the non-Hermitian nature of
\rH. We show that these physical quantities are not directly sensitive to the
presence of PT-symmetry.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figure
A Methodological Approach for Testing the Viability of Seeds Stored in Short-Term Seed Banks
[EN] Efficient management of `active¿ seed banks ¿ specifically aimed at the short-term storage at room temperature of seeds to be used locally in conservation/regeneration programmes of endemic or endangered plant species ¿ requires establishing the optimal storage time to maintain high seed viability, for each stored species. In this work, germination of seeds of the halophytes Thalictrum maritimum, Centaurea dracunculifolia and Linum maritimum has been investigated. The seeds had been stored for different periods of time in the seed bank of `La Albufera¿ Natural Park (Valencia, SE Spain) after collection in salt marshes of the Park, where small populations of the three species are present. Seeds of T. maritimum and C. dracunculifolia have a relatively short period of viability at room temperature, and should not be stored for more than three years. On the other hand, L. maritimum seeds maintain a high germination percentage and can be kept at room temperature for up to 10 years. T. maritimum seeds, in contrast to those of the other two species, did not germinate in in vitro tests nor when sown directly on a standard substrate, unless a pre-treatment of the seeds was applied, mechanical scarification being the most effective. These results will help to improve the management of the seed bank, to generate more efficiently new plants for reintroduction and reinforcement of populations of these species in their natural ecosystems within the Natural ParkForte Gil, J.; Yabor, L.; Bellido Nadal, A.; Collado Cerveró, F.; Ferrer-Gallego, P.; Vicente, O.; Boscaiu, M. The Chevreton Tensor and Einstein-Maxwell Spacetimes Conformal to Einstein Spaces
In this paper we characterize the source-free Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes
which have a trace-free Chevreton tensor. We show that this is equivalent to
the Chevreton tensor being of pure-radiation type and that it restricts the
spacetimes to Petrov types \textbf{N} or \textbf{O}. We prove that the trace of
the Chevreton tensor is related to the Bach tensor and use this to find all
Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes with a zero cosmological constant that have a
vanishing Bach tensor. Among these spacetimes we then look for those which are
conformal to Einstein spaces. We find that the electromagnetic field and the
Weyl tensor must be aligned, and in the case that the electromagnetic field is
null, the spacetime must be conformally Ricci-flat and all such solutions are
known. In the non-null case, since the general solution is not known on closed
form, we settle with giving the integrability conditions in the general case,
but we do give new explicit examples of Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes that are
conformal to Einstein spaces, and we also find examples where the vanishing of
the Bach tensor does not imply that the spacetime is conformal to a -space.
The non-aligned Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes with vanishing Bach tensor are
conformally -spaces, but none of them are conformal to Einstein spaces.Comment: 22 pages. Corrected equation (12
