Empiricism and stochastics in cellular automaton modeling of urban land use dynamics
An increasing number of models for predicting land use change in regions of rapidurbanization are being proposed and built using ideas from cellular automata (CA)theory. Calibrating such models to real situations is highly problematic and to date, serious attention has not been focused on the estimation problem. In this paper, wepropose a structure for simulating urban change based on estimating land usetransitions using elementary probabilistic methods which draw their inspiration fromBayes' theory and the related ?weights of evidence? approach. These land use changeprobabilities drive a CA model ? DINAMICA ? conceived at the Center for RemoteSensing of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (CSR-UFMG). This is based on aneight cell Moore neighborhood approach implemented through empirical land useallocation algorithms. The model framework has been applied to a medium-size townin the west of São Paulo State, Bauru. We show how various socio-economic andinfrastructural factors can be combined using the weights of evidence approach whichenables us to predict the probability of changes between land use types in differentcells of the system. Different predictions for the town during the period 1979-1988were generated, and statistical validation was then conducted using a multipleresolution fitting procedure. These modeling experiments support the essential logicof adopting Bayesian empirical methods which synthesize various information aboutspatial infrastructure as the driver of urban land use change. This indicates therelevance of the approach for generating forecasts of growth for Brazilian citiesparticularly and for world-wide cities in general
Arterial spin labeled MRI detects clinically relevant increases in myocardial blood flow with vasodilatation
ObjectivesThis study sought to determine whether arterial spin labeled (ASL) cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is capable of detecting clinically relevant increases in regional myocardial blood flow (MBF) with vasodilator stress testing in human myocardium.BackgroundMeasurements of regional myocardial perfusion at rest and during vasodilatation are used to determine perfusion reserve, which indicates the presence and distribution of myocardial ischemia. ASL CMR is a perfusion imaging technique that does not require any contrast agents, and is therefore safe for use in patients with end-stage renal disease, and capable of repeated or continuous measurement.MethodsMyocardial ASL scans at rest and during adenosine infusion were incorporated into a routine CMR adenosine induced vasodilator stress protocol and was performed in 29 patients. Patients who were suspected of having ischemic heart disease based on first-pass imaging also underwent x-ray angiography. Myocardial ASL was performed using double-gated flow-sensitive alternating inversion recovery tagging and balanced steady-state free precession imaging at 3-T.ResultsSixteen patients were found to be normal and 13 patients were found to have visible perfusion defect based on first-pass CMR using intravenous gadolinium chelate. In the normal subjects, there was a statistically significant difference between MBF measured by ASL during adenosine infusion (3.67 ± 1.36 ml/g/min), compared to at rest (0.97 ± 0.64 ml/g/min), with p < 0.0001. There was also a statistically significant difference in perfusion reserve (MBFstress/MBFrest) between normal myocardial segments (3.18 ± 1.54) and the most ischemic segments in the patients with coronary artery disease identified by x-ray angiography (1.44 ± 0.97), with p = 0.0011.ConclusionsThis study indicates that myocardial ASL is capable of detecting clinically relevant increases in MBF with vasodilatation and has the potential to identify myocardial ischemia
No entanto, as desigualdades persistem e as ideologias

Glucose and lipid dysmetabolism in a rat model of prediabetes induced by a high-sucrose diet
[Abstract] Glucotoxicity and lipotoxicity are key features of type 2 diabetes mellitus, but their molecular nature during the early stages of the disease remains to be elucidated. We aimed to characterize glucose and lipid metabolism in insulin-target organs (liver, skeletal muscle, and white adipose tissue) in a rat model treated with a high-sucrose (HSu) diet. Two groups of 16-week-old male Wistar rats underwent a 9-week protocol: HSu diet (n = 10)—received 35% of sucrose in drinking water; Control (n = 12)—received vehicle (water). Body weight, food, and beverage consumption were monitored and glucose, insulin, and lipid profiles were measured. Serum and liver triglyceride concentrations, as well as the expression of genes and proteins involved in lipid biosynthesis were assessed. The insulin-stimulated glucose uptake and isoproterenol-stimulated lipolysis were also measured in freshly isolated adipocytes. Even in the absence of obesity, this rat model already presented the main features of prediabetes, with fasting normoglycemia but reduced glucose tolerance, postprandial hyperglycemia, compensatory hyperinsulinemia, as well as decreased insulin sensitivity (resistance) and hypertriglyceridemia. In addition, impaired hepatic function, including altered gluconeogenic and lipogenic pathways, as well as increased expression of acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase 1 and fatty acid synthase in the liver, were observed, suggesting that liver glucose and lipid dysmetabolism may play a major role at this stage of the disease.Portugal.
