    En el trabajo de tesis, cuyo resumen se publica, el autor hace algunas referencias sobre la introducción de la vid en América del Sur y posteriormente en la Argentina. Analiza las crisis que ha soportado la industria vitivinícola y hace una comparación entre ellas. Llega en su estudio a determinar que, para lograr la estabilización definitiva del mercado de vinos, es necesario modificar la estructuración sobre la que está montadla actualmente, no solo en su faz industrial sino también comercial, recalcando que la solución no podrá lograrse sin suprimir la coexistencia de gremios con intereses distintos y opuestos, como son los que representan a los vinateros sin bodegas y bodegueros trasladistas por una parte y a las grandes bodegas por otra; reconociendo que, si bien los primeros están expuestos a la especulación de los grandes establecimientos, su permanencia como tales, ocasiona en contra de sus intereses, serios trastornos a la industria impidiendo la regulación definitiva de la misma.Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias y Forestale

    The Need for Prenatal Programs in Areas of Low Socioeconomic Status

    Adverse birth outcomes are a continual issue throughout the United States despite current research and major medical advances over the past few decades. One of the target goals set forth by Healthy People 2010 is for 90% of pregnant women to begin receiving prenatal care in the first trimester. According to Healthy People 2010, prenatal care includes three major areas which are: assessment of risk, treatment for current medical condition and education. Approximately three-quarters of all pregnant women receive some type of prenatal care at some point during their pregnancy. This number varies greatly over different levels of socioeconomic status (SES). Research suggests that pregnant women in areas of low SES are more likely to receive prenatal care late in pregnancy or not at all (Sunil T et al., 2008). Receiving little or no prenatal care throughout pregnancy can result in poor birth outcomes, pregnancy associated complications and infant mortality. According to the CDC, it is projected that approximately one-half of all pregnancy associated dealths could have been prevented with early prenatal care. These adverse events include birth defects, stillbirths, pre-term birth, neonatal and post-neonatal deal, SGA (small-gestational age), among many others.     Medical-grade silicone coated with rhamnolipid R89 is effective against Staphylococcus spp. Biofilms

    Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are considered two of the most important pathogens, and their biofilms frequently cause device-associated infections. Microbial biosurfactants recently emerged as a new generation of anti-adhesive and anti-biofilm agents for coating implantable devices to preserve biocompatibility. In this study, R89 biosurfactant (R89BS) was evaluated as an anti-biofilm coating on medical-grade silicone. R89BS is composed of homologues of the mono- (75%) and di-rhamnolipid (25%) families, as evidenced by mass spectrometry analysis. The antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus spp. planktonic and sessile cells was evaluated by microdilution and metabolic activity assays. R89BS inhibited S. aureus and S. epidermidis growth with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC99) of 0.06 and 0.12 mg/mL, respectively and dispersed their pre-formed biofilms up to 93%. Silicone elastomeric discs (SEDs) coated by R89BS simple adsorption significantly counteracted Staphylococcus spp. biofilm formation, in terms of both built-up biomass (up to 60% inhibition at 72 h) and cell metabolic activity (up to 68% inhibition at 72 h). SEM analysis revealed significant inhibition of the amount of biofilm-covered surface. No cytotoxic effect on eukaryotic cells was detected at concentrations up to 0.2 mg/mL. R89BS-coated SEDs satisfy biocompatibility requirements for leaching products. Results indicate that rhamnolipid coatings are effective anti-biofilm treatments and represent a promising strategy for the prevention of infection associated with implantable devices

    Performance of ALICE pixel prototypes in high energy beams

    The two innermost layers of the ALICE inner tracking system are instrumented with silicon pixel detectors. Single chip assembly prototypes of the ALICE pixels have been tested in high energy particle beams at the CERN SPS. Detection efficiency and spatial precision have been studied as a function of the threshold and the track incidence angle.     Beam Test Performance and Simulation of Prototypes for the ALICE Silicon Pixel Detector

    The silicon pixel detector (SPD) of the ALICE experiment in preparation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is designed to provide the precise vertex reconstruction needed for measuring heavy flavor production in heavy ion collisions at very high energies and high multiplicity. The SPD forms the innermost part of the Inner Tracking System (ITS) which also includes silicon drift and silicon strip detectors. Single assembly prototypes of the ALICE SPD have been tested at the CERN SPS using high energy proton/pion beams in 2002 and 2003. We report on the experimental determination of the spatial precision. We also report on the first combined beam test with prototypes of the other ITS silicon detector technologies at the CERN SPS in November 2004.     Trauma coagulopathy and its outcomes

    Background and Objectives: Trauma coagulopathy begins at the moment of trauma. This study investigated whether coagulopathy upon arrival in the emergency room (ER) is correlated with increased hemotransfusion requirement, more hemodynamic instability, more severe anatomical damage, a greater need for hospitalization, and hospitalization in the intensive care unit (ICU). We also analyzed whether trauma coagulopathy is correlated with unfavorable indices, such as acidemia, lactate increase, and base excess (BE) increase. Material and Methods: We conducted a prospective, monocentric, observational study of all patients (n = 503) referred to the Department of Emergency and Acceptance, IRCCS Fondazione Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia, for major trauma from 1 January 2018 to 30 January 2019. Results: Of the 503 patients, 204 had trauma coagulopathy (group 1), whereas 299 patients (group 2) did not. Group 1 had a higher hemotransfusion rate than group 2. In group 1, 15% of patients showed hemodynamic instability compared with only 8% of group 2. The shock index (SI) distribution was worse in group 1 than in group 2. Group 1 was more often hypotensive, tachycardic, and with low oxygen saturation, and had a more severe injury severity score than group 2. In addition, 47% of group 1 had three or more body districts involved compared with 23% of group 2. The hospitalization rate was higher in group 1 than in group 2 (76% vs. 58%). The length of hospitalization was >10 days for 45% of group 1 compared with 28% of group 2. The hospitalization rate in the ICU was higher in group 1 than in group 2 (22% vs. 14.8%). The average duration of ICU hospitalization was longer in group 1 than in group 2 (12.5 vs. 9.78 days). Mortality was higher in group 1 than in group 2 (3.92% vs. 0.98%). Group 1 more often had acidemia and high lactates than group 2. Group 1 also more often had BE <−6. Conclusions: Trauma coagulopathy patients, upon arrival in the ER, have greater hemotransfusion (p = 0.016) requirements and need hospitalization (p = 0.032) more frequently than patients without trauma coagulopathy. Trauma coagulopathy seems to be more present in patients with a higher injury severity score (ISS) (p = 0.000) and a greater number of anatomical districts involved (p = 0.000). Head trauma (p = 0.000) and abdominal trauma (p = 0.057) seem related to the development of trauma coagulopathy. Males seem more exposed than females in developing trauma coagulopathy (p = 0.018). Upon arrival in the ER, the presence of tachycardia or alteration of SI and its derivatives can allow early detection of patients with trauma coagulopathy

    Inhibitory effects of lipopeptides and glycolipids on C. albicans - Staphylococcus spp. dual-species biofilms

    Microbial biofilms strongly resist host immune responses and antimicrobial treatments and are frequently responsible for chronic infections in peri-implant tissues. Biosurfactants (BSs) have recently gained prominence as a new generation of anti-adhesive and antimicrobial agents with great biocompatibility and were recently suggested for coating implantable materials in order to improve their anti-biofilm properties. In this study, the anti-biofilm activity of lipopeptide AC7BS, rhamnolipid R89BS and sophorolipid SL18 was evaluated against clinically relevant fungal/bacterial dual-species biofilms (Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis) through quantitative and qualitative in vitro tests. C. albicans - S. aureus and C. albicans - S. epidermidis cultures were able to produce a dense biofilm on the surface of the polystyrene plates and on medical-grade silicone discs. All tested BSs demonstrated an effective inhibitory activity against dual-species biofilms formation in terms of total biomass, cell metabolic activity, microstructural architecture and cell viability, up to 72h on both these surfaces. In co-incubation conditions, in which BSs were tested in free soluble form, rhamnolipid R89BS (0.05 mg/ml) was the most effective among the tested biosurfactants against the formation of both dual-species biofilms, reducing on average 94% and 95% of biofilm biomass and metabolic activity at 72h of incubation, respectively. Similarly, rhamnolipid R89BS silicone surface coating proved to be the most effective in inhibiting the formation of both dual-species biofilms, with average reductions of 93% and 90%, respectively. Scanning Electron Microscopy observations showed areas of treated surfaces that were free of microbial cells or in which thinner and less structured biofilms were present, compared to controls. The obtained results endorse the idea that coating of implant surfaces with BSs may be a promising strategy for the prevention of C. albicans -Staphylococcus spp. colonization on medical devices, and can potentially contribute to the reduction of the high economic efforts undertaken by healthcare systems for the treatment of these complex fungal-bacterial infections

    Similar dispersal patterns between two closely related birds with contrasting migration strategies

    Studying dispersal is crucial to understand metapopulation and sink-source dynamics and invasion processes. The capability to disperse is especially important for species living in fragmented habitats like wetlands. We investigated the distribution of natal and breeding dispersal distances and philopatry in Spanish populations of two closely related reedbed-nesting birds, the Moustached Warbler Acrocephalus melanopogon and the Eurasian Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus. These warblers are morphologically very similar, but differ in migration strategy and, in our study area, in population size. Our aims were to find the best model for dispersal distances and to assess the occurrence of intra- or interspecific differences in dispersal patterns. We used ringing data from the Spanish marking scheme and selected recaptures to avoid including migrating individuals. In both species, most individuals were philopatric but dispersing birds were able to cross large distances (up to more than 100 km), suggesting the capability to compensate for habitat fragmentation. We found the heavy-tailed Cauchy distribution to be the best conceptual description for our data, in all cases but natal dispersal of Moustached Warblers. Among Eurasian Reed Warblers, natal philopatry was lower than breeding philopatry. We found no significant interspecific differences. This does not confirm the hypothesis of higher dispersal ability in long distance migrants (like Eurasian Reed Warblers) than in resident/short distance migrant bird species (like Moustached Warblers). The similarity in dispersal patterns among the two warblers may be explained by their close phylogenetic relatedness, similar constraints imposed on both species by a patchy habitat or similar evolutionary pressures.We are grateful to the many ringers who collected the data during years of fieldwork in Spain.     The ALICE Silicon Pixel Detector System (SPD)

    The ALICE silicon pixel detector (SPD) comprises the two innermost layers of the ALICE inner tracker system. The SPD includes 120 detector modules (half-staves) each consisting of 10 ALICE pixel chips bump bonded to two silicon sensors and one multi-chip read-out module. Each pixel chip contains 8192 active cells, so that the total number of pixel cells in the SPD is ≈ 107. The on-detector read-out is based on a multi-chip-module containing 4 ASICs and an optical transceiver module. The constraints on material budget and detector module dimensions are very demanding
