A parallel algorithm for the partial single-input pole assignment problem

    Get PDF
AbstractFor a linear control system, we introduce a parallel algorithm to assign a desired subset of eigenvalues to a single-input linear invariant dynamic system. We obtain a sequential algorithm as a particular case. The proposed algorithms are conceptually simple and are based on the computation of left eigenvectors of the state matrix. In addition, the parallel algorithm parallelizes easily as the numerical examples show

MR imaging features of high-grade gliomas in murine models: How they compare with human disease, reflect tumor biology, and play a role in preclinical trials

Murine models are the most commonly used and best investigated among the animal models of HGG. They constitute an important weapon in the development and testing of new anticancer drugs and have long been used in preclinical trials. Neuroimaging methods, particularly MR imaging, offer important advantages for the evaluation of treatment response: shorter and more reliable treatment end points and insight on tumor biology and physiology through the use of functional imaging DWI, PWI, BOLD, and MR spectroscopy. This functional information has been progressively consolidated as a surrogate marker of tumor biology and genetics and may play a pivotal role in the assessment of specifically targeted drugs, both in clinical and preclinical trials. The purpose of this Research Perspectives was to compile, summarize, and critically assess the available information on the neuroimaging features of different murine models of HGGs, and explain how these correlate with human disease and reflect tumor biology. This work was supported by the Programme for Advanced Medical Education from Fundaçâo Champalimaud, Fundaçâo Calouste Gulbenkian, Ministério da Saúde and Fundaçâo para a Ciência e Tecnologia, Portugal, to the first author (A.R.B.), and by grants from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation SAF 2008–01327 and the Community of Madrid S-BIO-2006–0170, to the last author (S.G.C.).Peer Reviewe

Calibration of QM-MOURA three-axis magnetometer and gradiometer

Abstract. MOURA instrument is a three-axis magnetometer and gradiometer designed and developed for Mars MetNet Precursor mission. The initial scientific goal of the instrument is to measure the local magnetic field in the surroundings of the lander i.e. to characterize the magnetic environment generated by the remanent magnetization of the crust and the superimposed daily variations of the field produced either by the solar wind incidence or by the thermomagnetic variations. Therefore, the qualification model (QM) will be tested in representative scenarios like magnetic surveys on terrestrial analogues of Mars and monitoring solar events, with the aim to achieve some experience prior to the arrival to Mars. In this work, we present a practical first approach for calibration of the instrument in the laboratory; a finer correction after the comparison of MOURA data with those of a reference magnetometer located in San Pablo de los Montes (SPT) INTERMAGNET Observatory; and a comparative recording of a geomagnetic storm as a demonstration of the compliance of the instrument capabilities with the scientific objectives

Acoustic estimation of abundance and distribution of anchovy in the NW Mediterranean

In order to estimate the abundance and the distribution of the anchovy in the Northwest Mediterranean, a standardised series of acoustic evaluation cruises was carried out in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1995. The series showed that there was agreement between the biomass estimations and the registered landings in the area. On the other hand, some areas were identified where the recruits were largely localisedESTIMACIÓN ACÚSTICA DE LA ABUNDANCIA Y DISTRIBUCIÓN DE ANCHOA EN EL NOROESTE MEDITERRÁNEO. Una serie estandarizada de campañas de evaluación acústica ha sido realizada durante los años 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 y 1995, para estimar la abundancia y distribución de la anchoa en el Noroeste del Mediterráneo. In this chapter, we focus on the role of the photomorphogenic signal to trigger the synthesis of photosynthetic genes and pigments during the greening process and later on, during photosynthetic plant development, with emphasis on the regulation of gene expression.Fil: Iñigo, Sabrina. Unlocking the mystery of the mid‑Cretaceous Mysteriomorphidae (Coleoptera: Elateroidea) and modalities in transiting from gymnosperms to angiosperms

    Get PDF
The monospecific family Mysteriomorphidae was recently described based on two fossil specimens from the Late Cretaceous Kachin amber of northern Myanmar. The family was placed in Elateriformia incertae sedis without a clear list of characters that define it either in Elateroidea or in Byrrhoidea. We report here four additional adult specimens of the same lineage, one of which was described using a successful reconstruction from a CT-scan analysis to better observe some characters. The new specimens enabled us to considerably improve the diagnosis of Mysteriomorphidae. The family is definitively placed in Elateroidea, and we hypothesize its close relationship with Elateridae. Similarly, there are other fossil families of beetles that are exclusively described from Cretaceous ambers. These lineages may have been evolutionarily replaced by the ecological revolution launched by angiosperms that introduced new co-associations with taxa. These data indicate a macroevolutionary pattern of replacement that could be extended to other insect groups
