Aumento de la fertilidad mediante técnicas de procesamiento avanzado de semen: caso clínico
Current equine reproductive clinic aims to improve subfertile stallions semen quality, (which is furthermore affected by the processing protocol) and maintain this quality during storage. The aim of this paper is to present a case referred to the Hospital Clínico Veterinario Complutense, of a stallion with low sperm quality, and 0% fertility rate in the first batch of mares served. Due to these results it was decided to perform a special semen processing protocol, developed by our laboratory, in order to increase its quality throughout a colloidal centrifugation technique with EquiPure® This system is able to increase semen quality and maintain itduring cooling preservation, obtaining results of around 57,1% of total fertility, which validates this technique as an effective method for subfertile stallions semen processing.La clínica reproductiva equina actual persigue mejorar la calidad seminal de sementales subfértiles, (la cual, además, se ve afectada por el procesamiento del semen) y que ésta se conserve durante el almacenamiento. El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar un caso clínico remitido al Hospital Clínico Veterinario Complutense, sobre un semental que presenta una baja calidad seminal, siendo la fertilidad del primer lote de yeguas del 0%. Ante estos resultados se decide realizar un procesado del semen, desarrollado por nuestro laboratorio, enfocado a aumentar su calidad mediante un protocolo de centrifugación coloidal con EquiPure® (Nidacon International AB). La aplicación de este protocolo consigue aumentar la calidad seminal y mantenerla durante la conservación en refrigeración, obteniéndose unos resultados de fertilidad total del 57,1%, lo que lo valida como método efectivo para el procesado del semen en casos de sementales subfértiles
Stable expression of α1-antitrypsin Portland in MDA-MB-231 cells increased MT1-MMP and MMP-9 levels, but reduced tumour progression.
The membrane bound matrix metalloproteinase MT1-MMP plays roles in modulating cell movement, independent of its abilities to remodel the extracellular matrix. Unlike many MMPs, MT1-MMP is activated in the Golgi prior to secretion by a pro-protein convertase, primarily furin. Regulation of the activation of pro-MT1-MMP has been methodically investigated, as altering the level of the active protein has broad implications in both activating other proMMPs, including pro-MMP-2, and many subsequent remodelling events. Our previous work in MCF-7 cells has demonstrated that modest, and not extremely high, levels of active MT1-MMP manifests into altered cell morphology and movement. At this low but optimal amount of MT1-MMP protein, changes to MT1-MMP levels are always mirrored by MMP-9 and pERK levels, and always opposite to MMP-2 levels. In this study, stable expression of the furin inhibitor α1- antitrypsin Portland (α1-PDX) in MDA-MB-231 cells increased overall MT1-MMP levels, but cells maintained a 21% proportion of pro-MT1-MMP. The increase in MT1- MMP was mirrored by increases in MMP-9 and pERK, but a decrease in MMP-2. These changes were associated with increased NF-κB transcription. In vitro analysis showed that α1-PDX decreased cell protrusions and migration, and this manifested as decreased tumourigenesis when examined in vivo using a chick CAM assay
Spontaneous intratumoral bleeding and rupture of giant gastric stromal tumor (> 30 cm) in a young patient
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Few cases of GIST bigger than 15 cm have been reported in medical literature, all primarily in elderly patients. We report an unusual case, in which a giant gastric GIST – in a young patient – presented as spontaneous intratumoral bleeding followed by intraluminal rupture.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 37-year-old man was admitted with an acute onset of abdominal pain. CT showed a 32 × 25 cm mass with some cystic lesions and areas of calcification. Twelve hours after admission the patient presented with an episode of upper GI bleeding, and a significant decrease of tumor size and hemoglobin level. An upper endoscopy showed a large bulge in the posterior aspect of the gastric wall, and a small ulcer with continuous bleeding coming from a central orifice. A subtotal gastrectomy was carried out. Pathological examination showed a giant gastric GIST measuring 32 × 25 × 21 cm and weighing 3.750 g. Immunohistochemical staining demonstrated positive reactivity to C-kit protein, CD34, and α-smooth muscle actin; but negative reactivity to S-100 protein.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Intratumoral bleeding is a very rare presentation of GIST; preoperative diagnosis is always made difficult by the absence of pathognomonic signs or symptoms. Emergency local excision with negative margins associated with adjuvant therapy with imatinib mesylate remains the main modality of treatment for high risk GISTs.</p
Project Reach: Implementation of Evidence-Based Psychotherapy Within Integrated Healthcare for Hurricane Harvey Affected Individuals
Project Reach was established to deliver evidence-based mental healthcare services to children and adults affected by Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath. Through Project Reach, an innovative multi-component assessment and treatment service is utilized to identify and treat in integrated healthcare settings both children and adults exhibiting significant behavioral health concerns in Houston. The aim is to provide sustainable, integrated mental health services through primary care and school-based settings to post-Harvey affected individuals whose emotional needs remain unmet. This paper describes the design and implementation of Project Reach as well as special considerations for implementation. The overall goal of Project Reach is to form a platform for expanding integrated services for those affected by Harvey that will maximize behavioral health outcomes while reducing cost and improving access
Perspectives on the implementation of screening and treatment for depression and alcohol Use disorder in primary care in Colombia
Q2Depression and alcohol use disorder (AUD) greatly contribute to the burden of disease worldwide, and have large impact on
Colombia’s population. In this study, a qualitative analysis evaluates the implementation of a technology-supported model
for screening, decision support, and digital therapy for depression and AUD in Colombian primary care clinics. Patient,
provider, and administrator interviews were conducted, exploring attitudes towards depression and AUD, attitudes towards
technology, and implementation successes and challenges. Researchers used qualitative methods to analyze interview themes.
Despite stigma around depression and AUD, the model improved provider capacity to diagnose and manage patients, helped
patients feel supported, and provided useful prevalence data for administrators. Challenges included limited provider time
and questions about sustainability. The implementation facilitated the identifcation, diagnosis, and care of patients with
depression and AUD. There is ongoing need to decrease stigma, create stronger networks of mental health professionals,
and transition intervention ownership to the healthcare center.Revista Internacional - Indexad
RECAMBIO TEMPORAL DE ESPECIES DE LEPIDÓPTEROS NOCTURNOS EN FUNCIÓN DE LA TEMPERATURA Y LA HUMEDAD EN UNA ZONA DE SELVA CADUCIFOLIA EN YUCATÁN, MÉXICO
The aim of this paper is to estimate the temporal of turnover pattern of moths species in relation to two environmental gradients: temperature (° C) and relative humidity(%). Using a light trap method, a community of moths were sampled for a period of 12 months, in the Kaxil Kiuic Biocultural Reserve located in Yucatán, Mexico. It was demonstrated that species turnover exhibits a strong temporal pattern in relation to temperature and relative humidity variation between climatic periods. The warm and dry period (March to July) had the highest dissimilatity in species composition, determined mainly by families: Noctuidae, Geometridae and Crambidae. This study provides information on the temporal pattern of temporal species turnover for families with high species richness of Neotropical moths. The results obtained have implications for conservation of moth biodiversity, since they allow a base line to be established, focused on detecting the effects of climatic variations on species composition.El principal objetivo de este trabajo es cuantificar el recambio temporal de mariposas nocturnas y su relación con dos gradientes ambientales: temperatura (° C) y humedad relativa (%). Utilizando una trampa de luz se realizó un muestreo por un periodo de 12 meses de una comunidad de mariposas nocturnas en la Reserva Biocultural Kaxil Kiuic (RBKK), ubicada enYucatán, México. Se observó que el recambio de especies exhibe un marcado patrón temporal en relación con la variación de la temperatura y humedad relativa entre periodos climáticos. El periodo cálido y seco (marzo a julio) presentó la mayor disimilitud en la composición de especies, determinada principalmente por las familias: Noctuidae, Crambidae y Geometridae. Los resultados obtenidos tienen implicaciones para la conservación de la biodiversidad de mariposas nocturnas, ya que permiten establecer una línea base enfocada a detectar la influencia de las variaciones climáticas sobre la composición de especies
Cientópolis: motorizando la ciencia ciudadana
En ciertas situaciones como la toma, clasificación y etiquetado de muestras, el científico realiza un gran número de tareas simples, repetitivas, que no pueden ser automatizadas y que podrían ser ejecutadas por personas sin formación en la materia si se las entrena y asiste con herramientas. En el pasado, en proyectos de conservación, astronomía y biología, entre otros, este tipo de tareas se ha delegado de manera efectiva a voluntarios. Cuando se convoca a ciudadanos voluntarios para colaborar con los científicos, se habla de ciencia ciudadana. Encontrar e involucrar a esos voluntarios, sumado a coordinar y reconocer su trabajo, es una tarea compleja. Definir y conducir proyectos de ciencia ciudadana presenta desafíos en tres áreas críticas: metodologías, tecnologías y construcción de comunidades de voluntarios. El proyecto Cientópolis (http://cientopolis.org) tiene como objetivo producir avances en estas tres áreas y socializarlos con la comunidad. En la actualidad, Cientópolis brinda espacios para compartir conocimiento y experiencias, ofrece herramientas para la construcción de proyectos de toma de muestras con dispositivos móviles y construcción colaborativa de conocimiento, da acceso a una comunidad creciente de ciudadanos científicos y explora estrategias de ludificación para consolidar y sostener dicha comunidad.Trabajo presentado por el Laboratorio de Investigación y Formación en Informática Avanzada (LIFIA
Search for gravitational waves associated with the August 2006 timing glitch of the Vela pulsar
The physical mechanisms responsible for pulsar timing glitches are thought to excite quasinormal mode oscillations in their parent neutron star that couple to gravitational-wave emission. In August 2006, a timing glitch was observed in the radio emission of PSR B0833-45, the Vela pulsar. At the time of the glitch, the two colocated Hanford gravitational-wave detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave observatory (LIGO) were operational and taking data as part of the fifth LIGO science run (S5). We present the first direct search for the gravitational-wave emission associated with oscillations of the fundamental quadrupole mode excited by a pulsar timing glitch. No gravitational-wave detection
candidate was found. We place Bayesian 90% confidence upper limits of 6.3 x 10^(-21) to 1.4 x 10^(-20) on the peak intrinsic strain amplitude of gravitational-wave ring-down signals, depending on which spherical harmonic mode is excited. A dynamic route choice model for public transport networks with boarding queues
The concepts of optimal strategy and hyperpath were born within the framework of static frequency-based public transport assignment, where it is assumed that travel times and frequencies do not change over time and no overcrowding occurs. However, the formation of queues at public transport stops can prevent passengers from boarding the first vehicle approaching and can thus lead to additional delays in their trip. Assuming that passengers know from previous experience that for certain stops/lines they will have to wait for the arrival of the 2nd, 3rd, …, k-th vehicle, they may alter their route choices, thus resulting in a different assignment of flows across the network. The aim of this paper is to investigate route choice behaviour changes as a result of the formation and dispersion of queues at stops within the framework of optimal travel strategies.
