An Investigation Of Sub-Pixel Cloud/clear-Sky Contamination Using Hyper-Spectral AVIRIS Data

    Get PDF
Cloud and clear sky contamination due to sub-pixel clouds remains as a troubling issue for scientific applications that rely on remotely sensed data. Sub-pixel level clouds may not be detected by a standard cloud filtering process, and thus can cause uncertainties in satellite-based meteorological property retrievals. In this study, using collocated data from Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) data, sub-pixel cloud and clear-sky contamination were studied over the west coast of Northern California. The hyper-spectral data from AVIRIS have a spatial resolution on the order of 11.5 m for the study case, thus can be used for carefully examining the sub pixel cloud related bias in GOES data. This study suggest that significant sub-pixel cloud and clear-sky contamination exist, and should be considered for future applications that use measurements from passive sensors such as GOES. Lastly, simulated AVIRIS radiance values from a radiative transfer model were used to explore the possibility of using AVIRIS data for future aerosol studies

The Acute Effects of Pre-Conditioning Activities with a Weighted Vest on Subsequent Linear Sprint and Change of Direction Performance in Physical Education Students

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a post activation potential application response in sprinting and change of direction performance. Fifteen physically active, healthy men (age 23.5±2.0 years, height 175.0±7.6 cm, body weight 72.2±8.5 kg, body fat 15.7±2.9 %) voluntarily participated in this study. Cross sectional research design with a single group (n=15) and repeated tests was used and applicants participated in sprint and pro-agility tests 8 minutes after the pre-conditioning (PC) with weight wests that corresponded 5% and 10% of their body weights in different days without pre-conditioning. For PC, 8 minutes before for each 30m sprint and pro-agility tests, they did a resisted running with a weight vest corresponding 5% and 10% of their body weights. Analysis shows that, sprint after PC activity as resistance running with %5 and %10 of body weight (p<0.05) and agility (p<0.05) data showed statistically significant difference. According to the results of Bonferroni post-hoc correction, 30m sprint test times, which were performed 8 minutes after the PC which includes a 30m sprint with weight vests corresponding to 5% of their body weight, showed an increase from control test times, 4.34±0.23 seconds to 4.40±0.24 seconds respectively. This 0.07 second increase is statistically significant (p<0.05). In our study, PAP effect being observed as negative, might be related with the lower body weight percentages of resisted running exercise which was selected for PAP

Effect of Expanded Perlite Aggregate Size on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Ultra Lightweight Concrete Produced with Expanded Perlite Aggregate

    Get PDF
In this study, ultra-light weight concrete (ULWC) with heat-insulating properties is produced by using different size expanded perlite aggregates and various admixtures. The compressive strength, 4 point bending strength, freezing and thawing resistance, water absorption, dry unit weight, ultra sound velocities and thermal conductivity of the samples were determined by applying appropriate tests. The effect of different size expanded perlite aggregate on the properties of ULWC were also investigated in this study and it was found that as the expanded perlite aggregate diameter increased, the void volume uniformity, water absorption percentage and freezing-thawing resistance increased while the unit volume weight of ULWC samples, ultrasound speed velocities, thermal conductivity and compressive strength were decreased. The changes in the masses and compressive strength of ULWC samples subjected to freezing and thawing cycles were examined. The compressive strength loss was found to be between 5 % and 47 % while the weight loss was between 1 % and 3.5 % after 15 freezing and thawing cycles. Finally, the effects of the admixtures on the fresh properties of ULWC were examined and it was determined that the use of 4.5 kg of air-entraining material in one cubic meter of concrete mix is the most ideal ratio and the use of more than 0.01 % by volume of polypropylene fiber is caused settlements in fresh concrete mixtures
