Evaluation of the damages caused by lightning current flowing through bearings
A laboratory for lightning current tests was set up allowing the generation of the lightning currents foreseen by the Standards. Lightning tests are carried out on different objects, aircraft materials and components, evaluating the direct and indirect effects of lightning. Recently a research was carried out to evaluate the effects of the lightning current flow through bearings with special reference to wind power generator applications. For this purpose, lightning currents of different amplitude were applied to bearings in different test conditions and the damages caused by the lightning current flow were analyzed. The influence of the load acting on the bearing, the presence of lubricant and the bearing rotation were studied
Quantum simulation of an extra dimension
We present a general strategy to simulate a D+1-dimensional quantum system
using a D-dimensional one. We analyze in detail a feasible implementation of
our scheme using optical lattice technology. The simplest non-trivial
realization of a fourth dimension corresponds to the creation of a bivolume
geometry. We also propose single- and many-particle experimental signatures to

En este artĂculo se muestra que el modelo esfĂ©rico de Lagrange para las integrales elĂpticas es interpretable como un computador analĂłgico. AdemĂĄs del lema fundamental que sustenta la analogĂa, se presentan ejemplos de cĂĄlculo para las amplitudes de la suma y la diferencia de dos amplitudes elĂpticas dadas. En el computador analĂłgico, estas operaciones se materializan por medio de construcciones con regla y compĂĄs esfĂ©ricos. A lo largo de la presentaciĂłn, se discuten las ventajas y desventajas del procedimiento propuesto. Al final, se esbozan algunas conclusiones sobre los mĂ©todos usados y sobre un posible mĂ©todo hĂbrido para la aproximaciĂłn numĂ©rica de las amplitudes elĂpticas
Simulation of gauge transformations on systems of ultracold atoms
We show that gauge transformations can be simulated on systems of ultracold
atoms. We discuss observables that are invariant under these gauge
transformations and compute them using a tensor network ansatz that escapes the
phase problem. We determine that the Mott-insulator-to-superfluid critical
point is monotonically shifted as the induced magnetic flux increases. This
result is stable against the inclusion of a small amount of entanglement in the

Topological Wilson-loop area law manifested using a superposition of loops
We introduce a new topological effect involving interference of two meson
loops, manifesting a path-independent topological area dependence. The effect
also draws a connection between quark confinement, Wilson-loops and topological
interference effects. Although this is only a gedanken experiment in the
context of particle physics, such an experiment may be realized and used as a
tool to test confinement effects and phase transitions in quantum simulation of

Asteroseismology using quadrupolar f-modes revisited: breaking of universal relationships in the slow hadron-quark conversion scenario
In this work, we consider polar perturbations and we calculate the frequency
and damping time of the quadrupolar fundamental f -mode of compact objects,
constructed using a wide range of model-independent hybrid equations of state
that include quark matter. We give special attention to the impact of the
hadron-quark conversion speed that, in the slow case, gives rise to a branch of
slow stable hybrid stars. Moreover, we study the validity of universal
relationships proposed in the literature and find out that none of them remains
valid when slow stable hybrid stars are taken into account. This fact could
constrain the applicability of asteroseismology methods with fundamental modes
designed to estimate the properties of pulsating compact objects. We hope that
this result could be tested with the start up of the third-generation
gravitational wave observatories, which might shed some light on the f -mode

Sorption and fractionation of dissolved organic matter and associated phosphorus in agricultural soil
Molibility of dissolved organic matter (DOM) strongly affects the export of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from oils to surface waters. To study the sorption an mobility of dissolved organic C and P (DOC, DOP) in soil, the pH-dependent sorption of DOM to samples from Ap, EB, and Bt horizons from a Danish agircultural Humic Hapludult was investigated and a kinetic model applicable in field-scale model tested. Sorption experiments of 1 to 72 h duration were conducted at two pH levels (pH 5.0 and 7.0) and six initial DOC concentrtions (0-4.7 mmol L-1). Most sorption/desorption occurred during the first few hours. Dissolved organic carbon and DOP sorption decreased strongly with increased pH and desorption dominated at pH 7, especially for DOC. Due to fractionation during DOM sorption/desorption at DOC concentrations up to 2 mmol L-1, the solution fraction of DOM was enriched in P indicating preferred leaching of DOP. The kinetics of sorption was expressed as a function of how far the solution DOC or DOP concentrations deviate from "equilibrium". The model was able to simulate the kinetics of DOC and DOP sorption/desorption at all concentrations investigated and at both pH levels making it useful for incorporation in field-scale models for quantifying DOC and DOP dynamics
Vitamin D deficiency in myotonic dystrophy type 1
Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a multisystemic
disorder affecting, among others, the endocrine
system, with derangement of steroid hormones functions.
Vitamin D is a steroid recognized for its role in calcium
homeostasis. In addition, vitamin D influences muscle
metabolism by genomic and non-genomic actions,
including stimulation of the insulin-like-growth-factor 1
(IGF1), a major regulator of muscle trophism. To verify
the presence of vitamin D deficit in DM1 and its possible
consequences, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D),
calcium, parathormone (PTH), and IGF1 levels were
measured in 32 DM1 patients and in 32 age-matched
controls. Bone mineral density (BMD) and proximal
muscle strength were also measured by DXA and a
handheld dynamometer, respectively. In DM1 patients,
25(OH)D levels were reduced compared to controls, and a
significant decrease of IGF1 was also found. 25(OH)D
levels inversely correlated with CTG expansion size,
while IGF1 levels and muscle strength directly correlated
with levels of 25(OH)D lower than 20 and 10 ng/ml,
respectively. A significantly higher percentage of DM1
patients presented hyperparathyroidism as compared to
controls. Calcium levels and BMD were comparable
between the two groups. Oral administration of cholecalciferol
in 11 DM1 patients with severe vitamin D deficiency
induced a normal increase of circulating 25(OH)D,
ruling out defects in intestinal absorption or hepatic
hydroxylation. DM1 patients show a reduction of circulating
25(OH)D, which correlates with genotype and may
influence IGF1 levels and proximal muscle strength. Oral
supplementation with vitamin D should be considered in
DM1 and might mitigate muscle weakness
