The production process in basketball: Empirical evidence from Spanish league

    Get PDF
The main objective of this paper is to provide an empirical assessment of the production process in a basketball team. We estimate a logit model in which the output produced by a team is the game outcome (win or loss) and the inputs are those play characteristics that impact on that outcome. From the results obtained it is clear that, on average, there is a substantial difference between the impact of each play characteristic on a basketball team’s winning probability and that probability varies as the quality/quantity of the inputs used changes, albeit not proportionally.sports economics, team sport, professional basketball, productive process, logit model

The Endoplasmic Reticulum Glucosyltransferase Recognizes Nearly Native Glycoprotein Folding Intermediates

The UDP-Glc:glycoprotein glucosyltransferase (GT), a key player in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) quality control of glycoprotein folding, only glucosylates glycoproteins displaying non-native conformations. To determine whether GT recognizes folding intermediates or irreparably misfolded species with nearly native structures, we generated and tested as GT substrates neoglycoprotein fragments derived from chymotrypsin inhibitor 2 (GCI2) bearing from 53 to 64 (full-length) amino acids. Fragment conformations mimicked the last stage-folding structures adopted by a glycoprotein entering the ER lumen. GT catalytic efficiency (V(max)/K(m)) remained constant from GCI2-(1-53) to GCI2-(1-58) and then steadily declined to reach a minimal value with GCI2-(1-64). The same parameter showed a direct hyperbolic relationship with solvent accessibility of the single Trp residue but only in fragments exposing hydrophobic amino acid patches. Mutations introduced (GCI2-(1-63)V63S and GCI2-(1-64)V63S) produced slight structural destabilizations but increased GT catalytic efficiency. This parameter presented an inverse exponential relationship with the free energy of unfolding of canonical and mutant fragments. Moreover, the catalytic efficiency showed a linear relationship with the fraction of unfolded species in water. It was concluded that the GT-derived quality control may be operative with nearly native conformers and that no alternative ER-retaining mechanisms are required when glycoproteins approach their proper folding.Fil: Caramelo, Julio Javier. Performance of MIMO systems in measured indoor channels with transmitter noise

    Get PDF
This study analyzes the impact of transmitter noise on the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with linear and nonlinear receivers and precoders. We show that the performance of MIMO linear and decision-feedback receivers is not significantly influenced by the presence of transmitter noise, which does not hold true in the case of MIMO systems with precoding. Nevertheless, we also show that this degradation can be greatly alleviated when the transmitter noise is considered in the MIMO precoder design. A MIMO testbed developed at the University of A Coruña has been employed for experimentally evaluating how much the transmitter noise impacts the system performance. Both the transmitter noise and the receiver noise covariance matrices have been estimated from a set of 260 indoor MIMO channel realizations. The impact of transmitter noise has been assessed in this realistic scenario.Galicia. Consellería de Economía e Industria; 10TIC003CTGalicia. Magnetic-field effects in defect-controlled ferromagnetic Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs semiconductors

We have studied the magnetic-field and concentration dependences of the magnetizations of the hole and Mn subsystems in diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs. A mean-field approximation to the hole-mediated interaction is used, in which the hole concentration p(x) is parametrized in terms of a fitting (of the hole effective mass and hole/local moment coupling) to experimental data on the Tc critical temperature. The dependence of the magnetizations with x, for a given temperature, presents a sharply peaked structure, with maxima increasing with applied magnetic field, which indicates that application to diluted-magnetic-semiconductor devices would require quality-control of the Mn-doping composition. We also compare various experimental data for Tc(x) and p(x) on different Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs samples and stress the need of further detailed experimental work to assure that the experimental measurements are reproducible.Comment: RevTeX 4, 3 two-column pages, 4 colour figures; to appear in J Appl Phy

Hybrid Supervised-Unsupervised Channel Estimation Scheme with Dynamic Transmission of Pilots

The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11063-010-9161-x[Abstract] Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) digital communications standards typically include pilot symbols in the definition of the transmit signals with the purpose of acquiring the Channel State Information (CSI) using supervised algorithms at the receiver side. Such pilot symbols convey no information and, therefore, system throughput, spectral efficiency and transmit energy consumption are all penalized. In this article, we propose to acquire the CSI combining supervised and unsupervised algorithms. Our strategy avoids the periodical transmission of unnecessary pilots by using a simple decision criterion to determine the time instants when the performance obtained with an unsupervised algorithm degrades or, equivalently, the time instants when pilots are required. We show the performance of this scheme for MIMO systems with Decision-feedback equalizers at the receiver.Galicia. Interpreting systems of continuity equations in spaces of probability measures through PDE duality

    Get PDF
We introduce a notion of duality solution for a single or a system of transport equations in spaces of probability measures reminiscent of the viscosity solution notion for nonlinear parabolic equations. Our notion of solution by duality is, under suitable assumptions, equivalent to gradient flow solutions in case the single/system of equations has this structure. In contrast, we can deal with a quite general system of nonlinear non-local, diffusive or not, system of PDEs without any variational structure
