Report of the sensor cooler technology panel

The Sensor Cooler Technology Panel identified three major areas in which technology development must be supported in order to meet the system performance requirements for the Astrotech 21 mission set science objectives. They are: long life vibration free refrigerators; mechanical refrigeration for 2 K to 5 K; and flight testing of emerging prototype refrigerators. A development strategy and schedule were recommended for each of the three areas

Sense of Belonging of New Members who are First-Generation College Students: A Single-Institution Qualitative Case Study

While there is research to suggest that first-generation college students benefit from and have a greater sense of belonging as a result of involvement in student organizations, there is limited research on how first-generation college students develop a sense of belonging specifically through their involvement as new members of a fraternity or sorority. This study, constructed within a single-institution qualitative case study framework, highlighted the unique role that organizational involvement, mentorship, emotional support, and first-generation status and identity can play in the development of sense of belonging for fraternity and sorority new members that are first-generation college students

Orthographic facilitation in oral vocabulary acquisition

An experiment investigated whether exposure to orthography facilitates oral vocabulary learning. A total of 58 typically developing children aged 8-9 years were taught 12 nonwords. Children were trained to associate novel phonological forms with pictures of novel objects. Pictures were used as referents to represent novel word meanings. For half of the nonwords children were additionally exposed to orthography, although they were not alerted to its presence, nor were they instructed to use it. After this training phase a nonword-picture matching posttest was used to assess learning of nonword meaning, and a spelling posttest was used to assess learning of nonword orthography. Children showed robust learning for novel spelling patterns after incidental exposure to orthography. Further, we observed stronger learning for nonword-referent pairings trained with orthography. The degree of orthographic facilitation observed in posttests was related to children's reading levels, with more advanced readers showing more benefit from the presence of orthography

Constituting monetary conservatives via the 'savings habit': New Labour and the British housing market bubble

The ongoing world credit crunch might well kill off the most recent bubble dynamics in the British housing market by driving prices systematically downwards from their 2007 peak. Nonetheless, the experience of that bubble still warrants analytical attention. The Labour Government might not have been responsible for consciously creating it, but it has certainly grasped the opportunities the bubble has provided in an attempt to enforce a process of agential change at the heart of the British economy. The key issue in this respect is the way in which the Government has challenged the legitimacy of passive welfare receipts in favour of establishing a welfare system based on incorporating the individual into an active asset-holding society. The housing market has taken on new political significance as a means for individuals first to acquire assets and then to accumulate wealth on the back of asset ownership. The ensuing integration of the housing market into an increasingly reconfigured welfare system has permeated into the politics of everyday life. It has been consistent with individuals remaking their political subjectivities in line with preferences for the type of conservative monetary policies that typically keep house price bubbles inflated

HI distribution and kinematics of NGC 1569

We present WSRT observations of high sensitivity and resolution of the neutral hydrogen in the starburst dwarf galaxy NGC 1569. Assuming a distance of 2.2 Mpc, we find a total HI mass of 1.3 * 10^8 M_sun to be distributed in the form of a dense, clumpy ridge surrounded by more extended diffuse HI containing a few additional discrete features, such as a Western HI Arm and an HI bridge reaching out to a small counterrotating companion cloud. About 10% by mass of all HI in NGC 1569 is at unusually high velocities. Some of this HI may be associated with the mass outflow evident from H-alpha measurements, but some may also be associated with NGC 1569's HI companion and intervening HI bridge, in which case, infall rather than outflow might be the cause of the discrepant velocities. No indication of a large bubble structure was found in position-velocity maps of the high-velocity HI. The galaxy as a whole is in modest overall rotation, but the HI gas lacks any sign of rotation within 60'' (0.6 kpc) from the center, i.e. over most of the optical galaxy. Here, turbulent motions resulting from the starburst appear to dominate over rotation. In the outer disk, the rotational velocities reach a maximum of 35 \pm 6 km/s, but turbulent motion remains significant. Thus, starburst effects are still noticeable in the outer HI disk, although they are no longer dominant beyond 0.6 kpc. Even excluding the most extreme high-velocity HI clouds, NGC 1569 still has an unusually high mean HI velocity dispersion of sigma_v=21.3 km/s, more than double that of other dwarf galaxies.Comment: Figure 11a,b and Figure 14 separately in jpg forma
