One person with two DNA profiles: a(nother) case of mosaicism or chimerism

Nuclear DNA markers, such as short tandem repeats (STR), are widely used for crime investigation and paternity testing. STR were used to determine whether a piece of tissue regurgitated by a dog was part of the penis of a dead, emasculated, man. Unexpectedly, when analyzing the recovered material and a blood sample from the deceased, five out of the 18 loci differed. According to the results, one could have concluded that these samples originated from two different persons. However, taking into account contextual information and data from complementary genetic analyses, the most likely hypothesis was that the deceased was a genetic mosaic or a chimera. Within a forensic genetic context, such genetic peculiarities may prevent associating the perpetrator of an offense with a stain left at a crime scene or lead to false paternity exclusions. Fast recognition of mosaics or chimeras, adapted sampling scheme, as well as careful interpretation of the data should allow avoiding such pitfall

    Model Rocket Workshop

This project was done in order to determine whether the theoretical analysis of the trajectory of the launching of a model rocket and its actual experimental trajectory match. To do so, a rocket model was built and launched, its trajectory being recorded by an altimeter. The theoretical and experimental results did not correspond, allowing us to argue why this could have happened.2015/201

Fanconi anemia protein FANCD2 inhibits TRF1 polyADP-ribosylation through tankyrase1-dependent manner

    Get PDF
Background: Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare autosomal recessive syndrome characterized by developmental abnormalities, progressive bone marrow failure, and predisposition to cancer. The key FA protein FANCD2 crosstalks with members of DNA damage and repair pathways that also play a role at telomeres. Therefore, we investigated whether FANCD2 has a similar involvement at telomeres. Results: We reveal that FANCD2 may perform a novel function separate to the FANCD2/BRCA pathway. This function includes FANCD2 interaction with one of the telomere components, the PARP family member tankyrase-1. Moreover, FANCD2 inhibits tankyrase-1 activity in vitro. In turn, FANCD2 deficiency increases the polyADP-ribosylation of telomere binding factor TRF1. Conclusions: FANCD2 binding and inhibiting tankyrase-1PARsylation at telomeres may provide an additional step within the FA pathway for the regulation of genomic integrity

Post-partum surgical wound infections: incidence after caesarean section in an Italian hospital

Introduction. Despite international recommendations and gen- eral agreement on the fact that more complications arise after caesarean section, Italy ranks first in the number of caesarean sections performed each year. Aim of this cohort study was to estimate the incidence of post-partum wound infections following caesarean section in a sample of low-risk women and to examine the main risk factors correlated. Methods. 430 mothers were included in the study. A data col- lection form was completed with woman?s obstetric history, details of the operation and of any infection that occurred during hospital staying. A post-discharge telephone call-up surveillance after delivery was also performed Results. A total of 20 (4.7%) SSIs were recorded. Through post-discharge surveillance, 85% of infections were identified. The time between membrane rupture and start of the operation was found to be associated with the development of infection (p = 0.04). No statistically significant association with any of the other risk factors was found. Discussion and conclusion. From the comparison of current practices with international guideline recommendations we could identify critical points that will need to be addressed in correc- tive and training interactions, specifically, choice and timing of administration of antibiotics in antimicrobial prophylaxis and timing of showering and shaving
