    Comparative Study of Vibration Response in Steel and Braided-Carbon-Fiber Bicycle Handlebars: A Numerical-Experimental Approach with Various Sensors

    \ua9 2024 by the authors. The comfort and safety of a cyclist are directly influenced by the vibrational behavior of the handlebar. Hence, the objective of this article is to comparatively assess the vibrational characteristics of two bicycle handlebars: one made of steel and the other made of braided composite material. The transmissibility function represents the relationship between the excitation applied to both handlebars through their stems and the corresponding response in the handle area, which was experimentally obtained by applying a random vibrating signal (constant amplitude of 0.01 g2/Hz) using a shaker. This signal was applied in a frequency range between 100 Hz and 1200 Hz, and the response was measured at one of the two cantilevered ends of the handlebar. Different sensors, including a laser vibrometer and a control accelerometer in the shaker, were utilized. The transmissibility, natural frequencies and damping functions were obtained. Subsequently, another experimental analysis was carried out with the instrumented handlebars mounted on a bicycle, placing three accelerometers and a GPS meter and traveling through a real test circuit, with a rough surface, speed bumps and areas with shaped warning bands. Power Spectral Density (PSD) curves were obtained for the steel and carbon-fiber-composite handlebars in order to quantify the signal intensity. Finally, a fatigue analysis was carried out in order to evaluate the expected life of both handlebars under the experimentally applied load, which is considered the reference cycle. This study offers a comparative analysis of the vibration behavior exhibited by steel and carbon-fiber-composite bicycle handlebars under experimentally applied load. In conclusion, data on natural frequencies, damping functions and fatigue life expectancy for both handlebar materials were obtained. Our study provides valuable insights into the vibrational behavior and performance characteristics of steel and carbon-fiber-composite bicycle handlebars, contributing to the understanding of their comfort and safety implications for cyclists

    Comparative study of alkali roasting and leaching of chromite ores and titaniferous minerals

    Extraction of titanium and chromium oxides may be achieved via roasting the respective minerals with alkali at high temperatures, followed by water and organic acid leaching. In this study, sodium and potassium hydroxides are used as alkali for roasting of chromite ores and ilmenite mineral concentrates. The thermodynamic analysis of the roasting process is discussed in terms of designing the process. Samples of chromite and titaniferous minerals were roasted with NaOH and KOH in a temperature range of 400 °C–1000 °C in an oxidising atmosphere. The roasted chromite and ilmenite samples were further processed in order to extract water-soluble Na2CrO4 from the reacted chromite and purify titanium dioxide from titaniferous minerals, respectively. The TiO2 purity obtained after roasting at 400 °C with NaOH and double leaching was 49.2 wt.%, whereas when using KOH the purity was 54.5 wt.%. The highest TiO2 purity obtained after roasting at 1000 °C for 2 h and double leaching with water and organic acids was 84 wt.%. At low temperature (400 °C) the recovery of chromium was higher for chromite roasted with KOH than for chromite roasted with NaOH. However, at high temperatures (700 °C and 1000 °C) chromium recoveries were similar when roasting with both hydroxides.     Development of a fatigue life prediction methodology for welded steel semi-trailer components based on a new criterion

    This paper presents a procedure developed to predict the fatigue life in components made of steel, based on the mechanical properties of the base material and Thermally Affected Zones (TAZs) owing to welding. The fatigue life cycles of the studied components are obtained based on a certain survival probability provided by a Weibull distribution. This procedure is thought to be applied on semi-trailer components, and therefore it is proposed for the steels that are typically used in its manufacturing. A criterion for the adjustment of the exponent and the stress stroke of the fatigue life curve in welded joints is proposed in which the parameters that define the alternating stress versus the number of cycles to failure (S-N) curve are obtained exclusively from the ratio between the base material yield stress of a given steel and the strength of its Thermally Affected Zone. This procedure is especially useful for steels that do not have a complete characterization of their fatigue parameters. These developments are implemented in a subroutine that can be applied in commercial codes based on Finite Element Method (FEM) to obtain a fatigue life prediction. Finally, a numerical-experimental validation of the developed procedure is carried out by means of a semi-trailer axle bracing support fatigue analysis

    Clinical study of cervicogenic headache

    The cervicogenic headache was studied to get a deeper insight into the pathogenetic mechanisms, and clinical presentation forms. Material and Methods. Eleven female patients, ranging from 34 to 81 years-old, with cervicogenic headaches, were studied and correlated with NMR images of the cervical spine. Results. Intense neck pain irradiated to parietal, occipital, temporal regions, and shoulders were correlated with NMR images of the degenerated cervical spine. Also, lumbar spine pathology, osteoporosis, gallstones, and cholecystitis were found. The following associated neurological, neurobehavioral, and metabolic diseases comorbidities were observed, such as blood hypertension, diabetes, obesity, hypothyroidism, partial epilepsy, tremor, familial stress, memory, sleep disorders, and dizziness. Also, we found mixed cervicogenic headaches and migraines in 50% of cases studied. Conclusion. The headache and the associated images of cervical pathology have been clinically interpreted as cardinal signs of cervicogenic headache. A mixed cervicogenic mixed type was observed

    Citicoline may prevent cognitive decline in patients with cerebrovascular disease

    Introduction: Neuroprotective drugs such as citicoline could improve cognitive performance and quality of life. We studied the effect of citicoline treatment and its association with Vascular Risk Factors (VRF) and APOE on cognition in patients with Subjective Cognitive Complaints (SCC) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Methods: This is an observational and prospective study with citicoline during 12 months follow-up. Eighty-one subjects who met criteria for SCC/MCI, aged 50–75 years with VRF were included and prescribed citicoline 1g/day. Subjects with previous cognitive impairment and any other central nervous system affection were excluded. Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test and paired samples t-test were used to analyze the change in neuropsychological performance. Results: Mean age of the sample was 68.2 (SD 6.8) years and 26 (32.09%) were females. Fifteen subjects (24.6%) were APOE-ε4 carriers, fifty-six (76.7%) had hypertension, fifty-eight (79.5%) had dyslipidemia, twenty-one (28.8%) had diabetes mellitus and twenty-six (35.6%) had cardiopathy. Thirty-two (43.8%) subjects were diagnosed as SCC and forty-one (56.16%) as MCI. During the follow-up, Tweny-six patients (81.25%) in the group of SCC remained stable, six subjects (18.8%) converted to MCI. Twelve patients (29.9%) with MCI reverted to SCC and twenty-nine patients (70.7%) remained stable. At follow-up, SCC subjects had an improvement in the global language domain (p=0.03), naming (p<0.001), attention (p=0.01) and visuospatial abilities (p<0.01). MCI group showed an improvement in the screening test (p=0.03), delayed memory (p<0.01), global cognition (p=0.04) and in cognitive flexibility (p=0.03). Presence of APOE-ε4 had no impact on the above findings. Discussion: SCC subjects showed an improvement in language and attention domains, while those with MCI performed better after 12 months in total scores of MoCA and RBANS domains, some converting back to SCC. This supports the idea that citicoline may prevent cognitive decline in patients with cognitive deficits

    Self-similarity in general relativity is briefly reviewed and the differences between self-similarity of the first kind and generalized self-similarity are discussed. The covariant notion of a kinematic self-similarity in the context of relativistic fluid mechanics is defined. Various mathematical and physical properties of spacetimes admitting a kinematic self-similarity are discussed. The governing equations for perfect fluid cosmological models are introduced and a set of integrability conditions for the existence of a proper kinematic self-similarity in these models is derived. Exact solutions of the irrotational perfect fluid Einstein field equations admitting a kinematic self-similarity are then sought in a number of special cases, and it is found that; (1) in the geodesic case the 3-spaces orthogonal to the fluid velocity vector are necessarily Ricci-flat and (ii) in the further specialisation to dust the differential equation governing the expansion can be completely integrated and the asymptotic properties of these solutions can be determined, (iii) the solutions in the case of zero-expansion consist of a class of shear-free and static models and a class of stiff perfect fluid (and non-static) models, and (iv) solutions in which the kinematic self-similar vector is parallel to the fluid velocity vector are necessarily Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) models.Comment: 29 pages, AmsTe

    (123)I-FP-CIT SPECT imaging in early diagnosis of dementia in patients with and without a vascular component.

    Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) are the most common cause of dementia. Cerebral ischemia is a major risk factor for development of dementia. (123)I-FP-CIT SPECT (DaTScan) is a complementary tool in the differential diagnoses of patients with incomplete or uncertain Parkinsonism. Additional application of DaTScan enables the categorization of Parkinsonian disease with dementia (PDD), and its differentiation from pure AD, and may further contribute to change the therapeutic decision. The aim of this study was to analyze the vascular contribution towards dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). We evaluated the utility of DaTScan for the early diagnosis of dementia in patients with and without a clinical vascular component, and the association between neuropsychological function, vascular component and dopaminergic function on DaTScan. One-hundred and five patients with MCI or the initial phases of dementia were studied prospectively. We developed an initial assessment using neurologic examination, blood tests, cognitive function tests, structural neuroimaging and DaTScan. The vascular component was later quantified in two ways: clinically, according to the Framingham Risk Score (FRS) and by structural neuroimaging using Wahlund Scale Total Score (WSTS). Early diagnosis of dementia was associated with an abnormal DaTScan. A significant association was found between a high WSTS and an abnormal DaTScan (p < 0.01). Mixed AD was the group with the highest vascular component, followed by the VaD group, while MCI and pure AD showed similar WSTS. No significant associations were found between neuropsychological impairment and DaTScan independently of associated vascular component. DaTScan seems to be a good tool to discriminate, in a first clinical assessment, patients with MCI from those with established dementia. There was bigger general vascular affectation observable in MRI or CT in patients with abnormal dopaminergic uptake seen on DaTScan
