    Anomalous ionization seen in the spectra of B supergiants

    An IUE survey of B supergiants has been conducted to study the persistence with spectral type of the ultraviolet resonance lines of N V, C IV and Si IV. N V is seen as late as B2.5Ia, C IV until B6Ia and Si IV throughout the range from B1.5 to B9. This is in fairly good agreement with the Auger ionization model of Cassinelli and Olson (1979). The terminal velocities are derived for the 20 stars in the sample and it is found that the ratio v(T)/v(esc) decreases monotonically with spectral type from the value of 3.0 that it has in the O spectral range to the value 1.0 at B9Ia

    Unitary representations of super Lie groups and applications to the classification and multiplet structure of super particles

    It is well known that the category of super Lie groups (SLG) is equivalent to the category of super Harish-Chandra pairs (SHCP). Using this equivalence, we define the category of unitary representations (UR's) of a super Lie group. We give an extension of the classical inducing construction and Mackey imprimitivity theorem to this setting. We use our results to classify the irreducible unitary representations of semidirect products of super translation groups by classical Lie groups, in particular of the super Poincar\'e groups in arbitrary dimension.     X-ray Emission from Magnetically Torqued Disks of Oe/Be Stars

    We focus attention on the Oe/Be stars to test the concept that the disks of these stars form by magnetic channeling of wind material toward the equator. Calculations are made of the X-rays expected from the Magnetically Torqued Disk (MTD) model for Be stars discussed by Cassinelli et al. (2002), by Maheswaran (2003), and by Brown et al. (2004). The dominant parameters in the model are the β\beta value of the velocity law, the rotation rate of the star, SoS_o, and the ratio of the magnetic field energy density to the disk gravitational energy density, γ\gamma. The model predictions are compared with the ROSATROSAT observations obtained for an O9.5 star ζ\zeta Oph from \Berghofer et al. (1996) and for 7 Be stars from Cohen et al. (1997). Extra considerations are also given here to the well studied Oe star ζ\zeta Oph for which we have ChandraChandra observations of the X-ray line profiles of the triad of He-like lines from the ion Mg XI.Comment: 28 pages with 6 figures.     Constructing Extremal Compatible Quantum Observables by Means of Two Mutually Unbiased Bases

    We describe a particular class of pairs of quantum observables which are extremal in the convex set of all pairs of compatible quantum observables. The pairs in this class are constructed as uniformly noisy versions of two mutually unbiased bases (MUB) with possibly different noise intensities affecting each basis. We show that not all pairs of MUB can be used in this construction, and we provide a criterion for determining those MUB that actually do yield extremal compatible observables. We apply our criterion to all pairs of Fourier conjugate MUB, and we prove that in this case extremality is achieved if and only if the quantum system Hilbert space is odd-dimensional. Remarkably, this fact is no longer true for general non-Fourier conjugate MUB, as we show in an example. Therefore, the presence or the absence of extremality is a concrete geometric manifestation of MUB inequivalence, that already materializes by comparing sets of no more than two bases at a time

    In the last 50 years, great changes occurred in Italy in poultry production. Local breeds were abandoned and high performing genetic hybrids spread by few industries. The globalization of poultry trade led to a worldwide loss of avian genetic resources . The indigenous breeds survived by fancy breeders, and conservation programs are required to preserve them. One of the most important step in a conservation program is to create a cryobank of genetic resources. For avian species, the most feasible way to preserve gametes is cryopreservation of semen. Researches in this field started in the late Fifties and were soon abandoned because of the bad quality of semen after freezing/thawing procedure. In 1995, Tselutin published a protocol to freeze avian semen, obtaining the same fertility rate than fresh semen. This procedure, consisting in few simple steps, was based on the initial dilution of semen and a first equilibration time at 5\ub0C, addition of DMA as cryoprotectant and a very fast second equilibration time, then dropping semen directly in a liquid nitrogen bath to form frozen semen pellets, finally thawing at high temperature for few seconds. On the basis of Tselutin\u2019s procedure, the aim of this thesis was to set the best conditions to cryopreserve semen of the Italian endangered local breed Mericanel della Brianza, and of the commercial Hubbard meat type strain. The four experiments described in this work focused on the study of the most performing conditions of the cryopreservation procedure for semen from the two genetic lines chosen. Semen quality of MdB and Hubbard roosters was studied soon after collection and after freezing/thawing in experiment 1 and 2. Semen quality was tested in cryopreserved semen through the evaluation of viability, motility, mitochondria status and DNA fragmentation. In vivo fertility of cryopreserved semen from Hubbard males was evaluated through heterologous in protocol 2. The sensitivity to cryopreservation of semen according to the initial quality was studied in protocol 4; viability and motility were considered to assess sperm quality

    SURFACE FUNCTIONALIZATION OF 3D GLASS-CERAMIC POROUS SCAFFOLDS FOR ENHANCED MINERALIZATION IN VITRO

    Bone reconstruction after tissue loosening due to traumatic, pathological or surgical causes is in increasing demand. 3D scaffolds are a widely studied solution for supporting new bone growth. Bioactive glass–ceramic porous materials can offer a three-dimensional structure that is able to chemically bond to bone. The ability to surface modify these devices by grafting biologically active molecules represents a challenge, with the aim of stimulating physiological bone regeneration with both inorganic and organic signals. In this research work glass ceramic scaffolds with very high mechanical properties and moderate bioactivity have been functionalized with the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The material surface was activated in order to expose hydroxyl groups. The activated surface was further grafted with ALP both via silanization and also via direct grafting to the surface active hydroxyl groups. Enzymatic activity of grafted samples were measured by means of UV–vis spectroscopy before and after ultrasonic washing in TRIS–HCl buffer solution. In vitro inorganic bioactivity was investigated by soaking the scaffolds after the different steps of functionalization in a simulated body fluid (SBF). SEM observations allowed the monitoring of the scaffold morphology and surface chemical composition after soaking in SBF. The presence of ALP enhanced the in vitro inorganic bioactivity of the tested material

    Optically thick clumps: not the solution to the Wolf-Rayet wind momentum problem?

    The hot star wind momentum problem η = Mν∞/(L/c)» much greater than 1 is revisited, and it is shown that the conventional belief, that it can be solved by a combination of clumping of the wind and multiple scattering of photons, is not self-consistent for optically thick clumps. Clumping does reduce the mass loss rate M, and hence the momentum supply, required to generate a specified radio emission measure epsilon, while multiple scattering increases the delivery of momentum from a specified stellar luminosity L. However, in the case of thick clumps, when combined the two effects act in opposition rather than in unison since clumping reduces multiple scattering. From basic geometric considerations, it is shown that this reduction in momentum delivery by clumping more than offsets the reduction in momentum required, for a specified ε. Thus the ratio of momentum deliverable to momentum required is maximal for a smooth wind and the momentum problem remains for the thick clump case. In the case of thin clumps, all of the benefit of clumping in reducing η lies in reducing M for a given ε so that extremely small filling factors f ≈ 10-4 are needed. It is also shown that clumping affects the inference of M from radio ε not only by changing the emission measure per unit mass but also by changing the radio optical depth unity radius Rrad, and hence the observed wind volume, at radio wavelengths. In fact, for free-free opacity proportional to αn2, contrary to intuition, Rrad increases with increasing clumpiness

    Within recent years, there has been growing interest in the prediction of bull fertility through in vitro assessment of semen quality. A model for fertility prediction based on early evaluation of semen quality parameters, to exclude sires with potentially low fertility from breeding programs, would therefore be useful. The aim of the present study was to identify the most suitable parameters that would provide reliable prediction of fertility. Frozen semen from 18 Italian Holstein-Friesian proven bulls was analyzed using computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) (motility and kinetic parameters) and flow cytometry (FCM) (viability, acrosomal integrity, mitochondrial function, lipid peroxidation, plasma membrane stability and DNA integrity). Bulls were divided into two groups (low and high fertility) based on the estimated relative conception rate (ERCR). Significant differences were found between fertility groups for total motility, active cells, straightness, linearity, viability and percentage of DNA fragmented sperm. Correlations were observed between ERCR and some kinetic parameters, and membrane instability and some DNA integrity indicators. In order to define a model with high relation between semen quality parameters and ERCR, backward stepwise multiple regression analysis was applied. Thus, we obtained a prediction model that explained almost half (R 2=0.47, P<0.05) of the variation in the conception rate and included nine variables: five kinetic parameters measured by CASA (total motility, active cells, beat cross frequency, curvilinear velocity and amplitude of lateral head displacement) and four parameters related to DNA integrity evaluated by FCM (degree of chromatin structure abnormality Alpha-T, extent of chromatin structure abnormality (Alpha-T standard deviation), percentage of DNA fragmented sperm and percentage of sperm with high green fluorescence representative of immature cells). A significant relationship (R 2=0.84, P<0.05) was observed between real and predicted fertility. Once the accuracy of fertility prediction has been confirmed, the model developed in the present study could be used by artificial insemination centers for bull selection or for elimination of poor fertility ejaculates

    Collisionless Damping of Fast MHD Waves in Magneto-rotational Winds

    We propose collisionless damping of fast MHD waves as an important mechanism for the heating and acceleration of winds from rotating stars. Stellar rotation causes magnetic field lines anchored at the surface to form a spiral pattern and magneto-rotational winds can be driven. If the structure is a magnetically dominated, fast MHD waves generated at the surface can propagate almost radially outward and cross the field lines. The propagating waves undergo collisionless damping owing to interactions with particles surfing on magnetic mirrors that are formed by the waves themselves. The damping is especially effective where the angle between the wave propagation and the field lines becomes moderately large (∼20\sim 20 to 80∘80^{\circ}). The angle tends naturally to increase into this range because the field in magneto-rotational winds develops an increasingly large azimuthal component. The dissipation of the wave energy produces heating and acceleration of the outflow. We show using specified wind structures that this damping process can be important in both solar-type stars and massive stars that have moderately large rotation rates. This mechanism can play a role in coronae of young solar-type stars which are rapidly rotating and show X-ray luminosities much larger than the sun.     Bone marrow-derived cells can acquire cardiac stem cells properties in damaged heart

    Experimental data suggest that cell-based therapies may be useful for cardiac regeneration following ischaemic heart disease. Bone marrow (BM) cells have been reported to contribute to tissue repair after myocardial infarction (MI) by a variety of humoural and cellular mechanisms. However, there is no direct evidence, so far, that BM cells can generate cardiac stem cells (CSCs). To investigate whether BM cells contribute to repopulate the Kit+ CSCs pool, we transplanted BM cells from transgenic mice, expressing green fluorescent protein under the control of Kit regulatory elements, into wild-type irradiated recipients. Following haematological reconstitution and MI, CSCs were cultured from cardiac explants to generate 'cardiospheres', a microtissue normally originating in vitro from CSCs. These were all green fluorescent (i.e. BM derived) and contained cells capable of initiating differentiation into cells expressing the cardiac marker Nkx2.5. These findings indicate that, at least in conditions of local acute cardiac damage, BM cells can home into the heart and give rise to cells that share properties of resident Kit+ CSCs
