Much of this data is made available via interactive websites - which involve links, downloads, on page interaction, and referrals to additional online pages. To meet the earth science data and information needs of many data users representing numerous different science domains, over 80 specialized websites are supported by multiple distributed organizations under the ESDIS umbrella

    Improved breeding and seed production of climbing perch (<em>Anabas testudineus</em>) in controlled tanks and cage systems

    The climbing perch (Anabas testudineus) is a valuable fish species with significant potential for aquaculture. However, a low survival rate was observed at its early development stages, requiring an optimized protocol for sustainable aquaculture production. This paper presents an improved breeding and seed production technology for climbing perch. Mature climbing perch were induced to spawn using salmon gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog (sGnRHa) at a dose of 30 µg/kg-1 body weight of the breeder. The female broodfish spawn 9–10 hours after hormone injection. Developmental stages were defined based on the morphological features of the embryos from the first cleavage to the hatching stage. The first cleavage began at approximately 18–20 minutes after fertilization. Newly hatched larvae were observed within 18–20 h at 30°C, having an average larval size of 0.389±0.042 mm (total length). Successful breeding entails a selection of suitable algal species, an optimal aquaculture environment, regular feeding rates, consistent monitoring of larval development, and effective management of water quality. Survival rates from the larval stage to fry were achieved at 84.69% and 77.60%, respectively, while the survival rate to the fingerlings stage was 72.51%. Therefore, by implementing an optimized protocol, aquaculture practitioners can maximize the production potential of climbing perch while ensuring sustainable cultivation practices. The findings from this research contribute to the advancement of climbing perch aquaculture by providing valuable insights for the successful cultivation and increased economic profitability of A. testudineus species in hatchery productions

    Unique Aspects of the Design of Phase I/II Clinical Trials of Stem Cell Therapy

    This chapter will review the unique aspects and limitations of the design of phase I/II (safety and efficacy) clinical trials of stem cell therapy. Although the classical pharmacologic principles applicable to drugs are not applicable to biologic (live cell) therapeutic agents, an important stage in the development of any new therapeutic agent is the establishment of an optimal dosage and delivery route. This can be particularly challenging when the treatment is a biologic agent, such as stem cells, that may exert its therapeutic effects via complex or poorly understood mechanisms. To date, clinical studies have shown inconsistent findings regarding the relationship between cell dose and clinical outcomes. This can be at least partially attributed to variations in donor cell type, source, characteristics, dosing/concentration, delivery route, underlying mechanisms of action, and efficacy endpoints tested. The current recommendations will be reviewed herein to give new investigators a general understanding of the unique issues that need to be considered and addressed when designing a stem cell therapy phase I/II clinical trial

    The state as a stimulator of wastewater treatment policy: a comparative assessment of three subnational cases in central Mexico

    River basin management and decentralisation reforms are promoted worldwide for solving water pollution problems. In Mexico, governmental efforts have been made to operate wastewater treatment plants countrywide, but federal administrations have not achieved their intended outcomes. Acknowledging the role of governance in the implementation of wastewater treatment policy, this paper analyses three cases in central Mexico and addresses the question: How does the governance context affect the implementation of the wastewater treatment policy in central Mexico? A governance assessment tool is applied to answer the question. The assessment allows an understanding of the governance context and is paired with a comparative case study design. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and documents reviews. The results indicate that the governance context mainly restricts the implementation of the wastewater treatment policy. In all subnational three cases, the river basin management and decentralisation reforms have not reached their objectives. By comparing the three cases, we found that the state level can play a relevant role to decrease fragmentation and to increase the coherence of the wastewater treatment policy. Therefore, strengthening the involvement of the state government and the improvement of mechanisms that limit political machinations can increase the supportiveness of the governance context

    Vibrio parahaemolyticus is the leading cause of food-borne diseases, and several pathogenic strains cause global gastroenteritis outbreaks. Here, we report a draft genome sequence of V. parahaemolyticus SNUVpS-1, which was isolated from seafood in a fishery market in the Republic of Korea and contained TL, toxR, and toxRSold genes.     Antimicrobial effect of hypochlorous acid on pathogenic microorganisms

    Disinfection is essential in terms of the public health or environmental hygiene. Hypochlorous acid (HOCL) solutionwas developed as a disinfectant in Korea. We evaluated the germicidal activity of HOCL against various pathogenic microbes.Thirty-one ATCC strains were exposed to HOCL solution at various concentrations (20, 40 and 80 ppm) for 1 minute. Allthe strains of bacteria, yeasts and mycobacteria were killed at 80 ppm after exposure to HOCL.     Swabbing for respiratory viral infections in older patients: a comparison of rayon and nylon flocked swabs

    The purpose of this study was to compare the sampling efficacy of rayon swabs and nylon flocked swabs, and of oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal specimens for the detection of respiratory viruses in elderly patients. Samples were obtained from patients 60 years of age or above who were newly admitted to Sorlandet Hospital Arendal, Norway. The patients were interviewed for current symptoms of a respiratory tract infection. Using rayon swabs and nylon flocked swabs, comparable sets of mucosal samples were harvested from the nasopharynx and the oropharynx. The samples were analysed using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods. A total of 223 patients (mean age 74.9 years, standard deviation [SD] 9.0 years) were swabbed and a virus was recovered from 11% of the symptomatic patients. Regardless of the sampling site, a calculated 4.8 times higher viral load (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.3–17, p = 0.017) was obtained using the nylon flocked swabs as compared to the rayon swabs. Also, regardless of the type of swab, a calculated 19 times higher viral load was found in the samples from the nasopharynx as compared to the oropharynx (95% CI 5.4–67.4, p < 0.001). When swabbing for respiratory viruses in elderly patients, nasopharyngeal rather than oropharyngeal samples should be obtained. Nylon flocked swabs appear to be more efficient than rayon swabs

    Isolation and Molecular Characterization of Streptococcal Species recovered from Clinical Infections in Farmed Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in the Philippines

    Streptococcosis cause severe losses for global tilapia farming especially in developing countries. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize streptococci recovered from Nile tilapia farmed in the Philippines. Moribund and apparently healthy fish were sampled from grow-out cages, ponds and hatcheries. Clinical signs observed included exophthalmia, eye opacity, ascites, lethargy, erratic swimming, and haemorrhages. Results showed that both Streptococcus iniae and Streptococcus agalactiae were associated with disease in these sites. Consistent with global reports, including those from Southeast Asia, S. agalactiae was more widespread than S. iniae. Molecular serotyping of the S. agalactiae isolates identified the serotype Ia and serotype Ib. Histopathological findings were meningitis, meningoencephalitis and septicaemia. Identical virulence profiles were found for all strains of S. iniae, while S. agalactiae strains were separated into virulence profile I and profile II. All strains were susceptible to the tested antibiotics and resistant to oxolinic acid. Only S. agalactiae serotype Ib showed resistance to sulphamethoxazole-trimethoprim. This is the first study from the Philippines to characterize the streptococci involved in disease outbreaks in tilapia aquaculture. Outputs from this study will promote development of efficacious disease control strategies in tilapia farming for the Philippines and in Southeast Asia
