FRESH VEGETABLE PRICE LINKAGE BETWEEN GROWER/SHIPPERS, WHOLESALERS AND RETAILERS
This study focused on the transmission of price adjustments between grower/shippers and wholesalers and between wholesale handlers and retailers of nine fresh vegetables (only the results associated with bell peppers are reported in this paper). Results among the nine vegetable products were not consistent with respect to the magnitude of adjustments or the time periods involved in the adjustments. In response to wholesale price changes, upward price adjustments at the retail level occur more quickly than do downward price adjustments. Price transmission relationships also varied among the vegetable products between the wholesaler and grower. Overall, the results indicate that factors in addition to changes in upstream prices are impacting retailers' and wholesalers' pricing decisions.Demand and Price Analysis,
Microwave remote sensing from space
Spaceborne microwave remote sensors provide perspectives of the earth surface and atmosphere which are of unique value in scientific studies of geomorphology, oceanic waves and topography, atmospheric water vapor and temperatures, vegetation classification and stress, ice types and dynamics, and hydrological characteristics. Microwave radars and radiometers offer enhanced sensitivities to the geometrical characteristics of the earth's surface and its cover, to water in all its forms--soil and vegetation moisture, ice, wetlands, oceans, and atmospheric water vapor, and can provide high-resolution imagery of the earth's surface independent of cloud cover or sun angle. A brief review of the historical development and principles of active and passive microwave remote sensing is presented, with emphasis on the unique characteristics of the information obtainable in the microwave spectrum and the value of this information to global geoscientific studies. Various spaceborne microwave remote sensors are described, with applications to geology, planetology, oceanography, glaciology, land biology, meteorology, and hydrology. A discussion of future microwave remote sensor technological developments and challenges is presented, along with a summary of future missions being planned by several countries

Individual Differences and Predictive Validity in Student Modeling
This paper evaluates the student modeling procedure in the ACT Programming Tutor (APT). APT is a practice environment that provides assistance to students as they write short programs. The tutor is constructed around a set of several hundred programming rules called the ideal student model, that allows the program to solve exercises along with the student. As the student works the tutor maintains an estimate of the probability that the student has learned the rules in the ideal model, in a process we call knowledge tracing. The cognitive model, and the learning and performance assumptions that underlie knowledge tracing are described. The assumptions that underlie knowledge tracing also yield performance predictions. These predictions provide a good fit to students' performance in completing tutor exercises, but a more important issue is how well the model predicts students' performance outside the tutor enviroimient. A previous study showed that the model provides a good fit to average posttest performance across students, but is less sensitive to individual differences. This paper describes a method of individualizing learning and performance estimates on-line in the tutor and assesses the validity of the resulting performance predictions
Voltage control of nuclear spin in ferromagnetic Schottky diodes
We employ optical pump-probe spectroscopy to investigate the voltage
dependence of spontaneous electron and nuclear spin polarizations in hybrid
MnAs/n-GaAs and Fe/n-GaAs Schottky diodes. Through the hyperfine interaction,
nuclear spin polarization that is imprinted by the ferromagnet acts on
conduction electron spins as an effective magnetic field. We demonstrate tuning
of this nuclear field from <0.05 to 2.4 kG by varying a small bias voltage
across the MnAs device. In addition, a connection is observed between the diode
turn-on and the onset of imprinted nuclear polarization, while traditional
dynamic nuclear polarization exhibits relatively little voltage dependence.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review B Rapid Communications. 15 pages, 3

Research and Development of Automated Eddy Current Testing for Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels
Eddy current testing (ET) was used to scan bare metallic liners used in the fabrication of composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) for flaws which could result in premature failure of the vessel. The main goal of the project was to make improvements in the areas of scan signal to noise ratio, sensitivity of flaw detection, and estimation of flaw dimensions. Scan settings were optimized resulting in an increased signal to noise ratio. Previously undiscovered flaw indications were observed and investigated. Threshold criteria were determined for the system software's flaw report and estimation of flaw dimensions were brought to an acceptable level of accuracy. Computer algorithms were written to import data for filtering and a numerical derivative filtering algorithm was evaluated
Cumulative and Differential Effects of Early Child Care and Middle Childhood Out-of-School Time on Adolescent Functioning.
Effects associated with early child care and out-of-school time (OST) during middle childhood were examined in a large sample of U.S. adolescents (N = 958). Both higher quality early child care AND more epochs of organized activities (afterschool programs and extracurricular activities) during middle childhood were linked to higher academic achievement at age 15. Differential associations were found in the behavioral domain. Higher quality early child care was associated with fewer externalizing problems, whereas more hours of early child care was linked to greater impulsivity. More epochs of organized activities was associated with greater social confidence. Relations between early child care and adolescent outcomes were not mediated or moderated by OST arrangements in middle childhood, consistent with independent, additive relations of these nonfamilial settings
The Independent and Interactive Effects of the Big Five Personality Dimensions upon Dispositional Coping and Coping Effectiveness in Sport.
We examined the independent and interactive effects of the Big-Five personality traits on dispositional coping and coping effectiveness among athletes. Participants were 400 athletes (mean age 22.97, s =7.00) from the United Kingdom. The athletes completed measures of personality, dispositional coping, and coping effectiveness. The Big-Five personality traits independently predicted the use of higher-order coping dimensions. Extraversion, agreeableness, and openness positively predicted task-oriented coping. Neuroticism positively predicted distraction-oriented coping, whereas agreeableness, extraversion and conscientiousness were negative predictors. Both extraversion and neuroticism positively predicted disengagement-oriented coping, whereas agreeableness and conscientiousness were negative predictors. Only neuroticism predicted coping effectiveness, which emerged as a negative predictor. Findings also showed a two-way interaction effect for predicting task-oriented coping between neuroticism and openness, and between extraversion and neuroticism. A further two-way interaction effect for predicting distraction-oriented coping was found between agreeableness and conscientiousness. These findings reinforce the need to investigate not only independent, but also interactive effects of personality dimensions upon sport-related dispositional coping
Exchange-coupling constants, spin density map, and Q dependence of the inelastic neutron scattering intensity in single-molecule magnets
The Q dependence of the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) intensity of
transitions within the ground-state spin multiplet of single-molecule magnets
(SMMs) is considered. For these transitions, the Q dependence is related to the
spin density map in the ground state, which in turn is governed by the
Heisenberg exchange interactions in the cluster. This provides the possibility
to infer the exchange-coupling constants from the Q dependence of the INS
transitions within the spin ground state. The potential of this strategy is
explored for the M = +-10 -> +- 9 transition within the S = 10 multiplet of the
molecule Mn12 as an example. The Q dependence is calculated for powder as well
as single-crystal Mn12 samples for various exchange-coupling situations
discussed in the literature. The results are compared to literature data on a
powder sample of Mn12 and to measurements on an oriented array of about 500
single-crystals of Mn12. The calculated Q dependence exhibits significant
variation with the exchange-coupling constants, in particular for a
single-crystal sample, but the experimental findings did not permit an
unambiguous determination. However, although challenging, suitable experiments

Developing autonomous learning in first year university students using perspectives from positive psychology
Autonomous learning is a commonly occurring learning outcome from university study, and it is argued that students require confidence in their own abilities to achieve this. Using approaches from positive psychology, this study aimed to develop confidence in firstâyear university students to facilitate autonomous learning. Psychological character strengths were assessed in 214 students on day one at university. Two weeks later their top three strengths were given to them in study skills modules as part of a psychoâeducational intervention designed to increase their selfâefficacy and selfâesteem. The impact of the intervention was assessed against a control group of 40 students who had not received the intervention. The results suggested that students were more confident after the intervention, and that levels of autonomous learning increased significantly compared to the controls. Character strengths were found to be associated with selfâefficacy, selfâesteem and autonomous learning in ways that were theoretically meaningful
