Physical exercise is a non-pharmacological alternative to act on the indicators of the metabolic syndrome (MS). Functional resistance training (FRT), recruits a greater number of muscle groups, which can lead to greater energy expenditure. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between the basal metabolic rate (BMR) and the heart rate variability (HRV) in FRT in individuals with MS. The study was a non-randomized clinical trial consisting of 32 subjects who had MS and were divided into functional resistance training group (FRTG) and control group (CG). The HRV was collected with a cardiofrequency meter, the vagal indices were selected and the analysis of BMR was performed by bioimpedance. Correlation was observed for the HF index with BMR only prior to FRT. Therefore, there is no significant correlation between vagal indices and BMR in individuals with MS after performing RFT.O exercício físico é uma alternativa não farmacológica para agir sobre os indicadores da síndrome metabólica (SM).

Introduction: Currently the Brazilian pediatric population has been exposed to risk factors caused by physical inactivity and poor diet, resulting in an increase in the Body Mass Index (BMI), which can lead to vascular problems even in childhood. Objectives: to verify the influence of BMI on pressure levels. Methods: The sample consisted of 61 children of both sexes, chronological age between six and seven years and regularly enrolled / attending school. These children were evaluated in their respective hemodynamic variables (systolic and diastolic blood pressure), body weight, height.. Results: Mean and standard deviation of participants' ages were 7 (± 0.3) years, SBP had 89.4 (± 10) and DBP of 57 (± 6.9), eutrophic patients had 88, 7 (± 1.1) for SBP and 56 (± 5) for DBP and for those with Overweight / Obesity (SO) 109 (± 5) for SBP and 70.7 (± 8.2) for PAD, with p value = 0.0001, Pearson's correlation for BMI with SBP and DBP was moderate for both, but with beta of 1.53 in linear regression for SBP and 0.96 for DBP. Conclusion: BMI directly influences systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels and the control of overweight / obesity is necessary at the initial ages of life.

Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most common causes of neuropathies, which can be caused by molecular imbalances that impair metabolic pathways. Studies in rats showed the importance of sirtuins (SIRT), deacetylases that use NAD+ as a cofactor, which have a widespread function in metabolism, and their relation when food deprived or calorie restricted. Additionally, diabetic neuropathy presents different structural biomarkers that cause morphological alterations in fibers that can be partially treated. SIRT1 is the principal sirtuin, which acts on hypothalamus, liver, kidney, among other organs, up regulating or down regulating the expression of some genes or enzymes crucial in the process of glucose absorption

BACKGROUND: The family narratives are true contextual cues in the representation of the experiences of illness of depressive child. The family members use healthcare services in an attempt to understand the disease so that describe the everyday practices in the living with the child. OBJECTIVE: This original article aims to present childhood depression with its various nuances and its many consequences in the family context. METHODS: The universe of this study involved 24 families in the age group ranging from 45 to 70 years who searched the care services at Children's Psychosocial Care Center (CAPSi). Through the records, a survey of the family members was performed, from case reports, in the course of medical and psychological consultations. This is a purposive sample, which was selected by approximation the inclusion criteria, a sample of 12 family members of both sexes. The attention focused on the use of narrative interview - which is recognized as a genre of sociolinguistic research - fully recorded. RESULTS: The family member has its convivial trajectory with the disease through a specific identity and enunciation with the child. The family narratives show up symbolic portraits to the rescue of the guiding elements of the depressive situation. The family narratives are shown as spaces of reinterpretation of pain and psychological distress. The disorder explained in the narratives of childhood depression inserted in understanding plays a crucial role in exposing the intensity of pain and psychological distress. CONCLUSION: It is fundamental important in clinical care the psychiatric practice inserted into the historical and social context of the family members who have their own living narrative with the disease

    Get PDF
Abstract\ud \ud \ud \ud Background\ud \ud Considered as a moment of psychological vulnerability, adolescence is remarkably a risky period for the development of psychopathologies, when the choice of the correct therapeutic approach is crucial for achieving remission. One of the researched therapies in this case is electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The present study reviews the recent and classical aspects regarding ECT use in adolescents.\ud \ud \ud \ud Methods\ud \ud Systematic review, performed in November 2012, conformed to the PRISMA statement.\ud \ud \ud \ud Results\ud \ud From the 212 retrieved articles, only 39 were included in the final sample. The reviewed studies bring indications of ECT use in adolescents, evaluate the efficiency of this therapy regarding remission, and explore the potential risks and complications of the procedure.\ud \ud \ud \ud Conclusions\ud \ud ECT use in adolescents is considered a highly efficient option for treating several psychiatric disorders, achieving high remission rates, and presenting few and relatively benign adverse effects. Risks can be mitigated by the correct use of the technique and are considered minimal when compared to the efficiency of ECT in treating psychopathologies

Ebola: an international public health emergency

    Get PDF
The outbreak of Ebola in West Africa could become one of the worst infectious-disease-driven humanitarian crises of recent times. With more than 3000 deaths since the first case was confirmed in March 2014, the international community has recognized Ebola as a public health emergency of international concern and a clear threat to global health security. The complexity of dealing with this Ebola outbreak has highlighted the need for traditional actors, such as WHO and the CDC, to embrace the wider health and humanitarian community. The epidemic reinforces the need for nations to investment in health infrastructure and disease surveillance to keep pace with other developments in Africa. If Ebola arrives in high-income and middleincome nations, it should be contained quickly. The crisis shows the importance of sufficient levels of multilateral funding for WHO. The world needs a strong WHO, with the financing and political influence to fulfil its historic mission
