Glomus tumor of the oral cavity : report of a rare case and literature review
Glomus tumor is a benign neoplasm composed of a perivascular proliferation of glomic cells that resembles the normal glomus body. Usually, it appears as a solitary, symptomatic small blue-red nodule, located in the deep dermis or subcutis of upper or lower extremities of young to middle-aged adults. Cases affecting the oral cavity are very rare, with only 23 well-documented cases reported in the English-language literature. Herein, we present a rare case of glomus tumor of the upper lip, and review the literature of cases involving the mouth302185190CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQNão te
Pigmented odontogenic keratocyst : report of a rare case and review of the literature
Pigmented odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is very rare and its etiology remains uncertain. To the best of our knowledge, only 9 cases of pigmented OKC have been published in English-language literature. This report describes a pigmented OKC in a 14-year-old black male patient. Radiographically, the lesion appeared as a well-circumscribed, unilocular, and radiolucent image. A surgical excision was performed. Histopathological examination revealed an OKC. Additionally, a brownish, sparsed, intracytoplasmic pigmentation was observed in the basal cell layer, which was positive for Fontana-Masson staining. Immunohistochemistry reactions revealed positive dendritic cells for S-100 protein, HMB45 and Melan A. No clinical and imaging signs of recurrence were observed after 24 months. In conclusion, melanin apparently does not represent a factor for distinct biological behavior in OKC
A review of oral biopsies in children and adolescents: a clinicopathological study of a case series
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathological features of oral lesions in children and
adolescents diagnosed in an Oral Pathology Laboratory.
Study design: Between 2000 and 2010, all oral lesions diagnosed in patients younger than 18 years old, from the
Oral Pathology Laboratory, Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil, were selected for the study. The clinical
data were obtained from the patient charts filed in the Laboratory. All cases were microscopically reviewed and the
diagnosis classified into 10 categories.
Results: From the 2395 lesions, 315 (13.1%) occurred in this age group. The lesions were more common in the
female gender (59%) during the second decade of life (69%). The inflammatory/reactive lesions were the most
common (64.4%), followed by the epithelial and soft tissue neoplasms (8.6%). The mucocele (33.3%) was the most
common lesion, with the lip mucosa representing the most affected site (48%). In 61.5% there was concordance
between clinical hypothesis of diagnosis and histopathological diagnosis.
Conclusions: Inflammatory/reactive lesions were the most common biopsied lesions and the lip the most frequent
site. Similar studies are important, reinforced by the low correlation between clinical diagnosis and histopathological diagnosis
Oral paracoccidioidomycosis in a non-endemic region from Brazil: a short case series
Although the paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is endemic in Brazil, the occurrence in most states from the North and Northeastern Brazil is very unusual. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic features of a case series of oral PCM in a non-endemic region from Brazil (Northeastern region), discussing the clinical and histopathological differential diagnoses of the oral manifestations of the disease. Between 2000 and 2017, all cases of oral PCM were retrieved from the Oral Pathology Laboratory, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, located at Northeastern Brazil. Clinical data, such as age, gender, origin, occupation, site, symptoms, time of complaints, clinical presentation, number of lesions, and clinical hypotheses of diagnosis, were collected from the clinical charts. All cases were histologically reviewed in hematoxylin-eosin and Gomori-Grocott staining. Six cases were identified. All patients were male, with a mean age of 53.8 years (ranging from 40 to 73 years). Four cases appeared as multiple ulcers and two presented single lesions (buccal mucosa and hard palate). Clinically, in five cases, squamous cell carcinoma was considered in the differential diagnosis. The common histopathological features consisted of hyperplastic epithelium, intraepithelial microabscesses, and formation of granulomatous chronic inflammatory reaction in a fibrous connective tissue with severe chronic inflammatory reaction. Yeasts were observed either inside of multinucleated giant cells or extracellularly. Although rare in non-endemic regions, oral PCM should be considered in the differential diagnosis of oral chronic ulcers, mainly those multiple
Awareness on oral cancer among patients attending dental school clinics in Brazil
Oral cancer is considered a public health problem worldwide. Dental schools may play an important role in educating patients about oral cancer. This study aimed at evaluating the knowledge of patients attending clinics at two dental schools in Brazil. From March 2017 to April 2017, 251 patients who were attending clinics at two dental schools in Recife, Brazil, were included in the study. Patients were contacted in the waiting rooms of the clinic. Each participant completed a self-administered questionnaire, which consists of 21 questions, including socio-demographic and specific information on the disease. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and a chi-square test (with a 5% significance level) was used to assess the correlation between the variables, education and family income and other variables. Most participants were women (64.9%) with a mean age of 42.72 years. Most participants were knowledgeable about oral cancer and identified tobacco use (48.6%), alcohol consumption (25.1%), and solar radiation (12%) as the primary risk factors for the disease. Only 36.7% of the participants reported having received counselling on oral cancer, of which 18.3% received the information from a dentist. All patients with an income higher than six minimum wages were aware about oral cancer (p = 0.001). These findings emphasize the importance of educational programs in dental schools as well providing integrated services for patients seeking care at school clinics, including population?s awareness on oral cancer

Hydrogel of polysaccharide of sugarcane molasses as carrier of bone morphogenetic protein in the reconstruction of critical bone defects in rats
PURPOSE: To evaluate the benefit of using carriers such as the biopolymer gel (hidrogel of polysaccharide of sugarcane molasses) associated with the bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP's) in the repair of critical bone defects in calvaria of Wistar rats. METHODS: Forty-two rats were submitted to a surgical calvaria bone defects. These animals were divided into two experimental groups, positive control group and negative control group. The Group I the calvaria defect was filled up with biopolymer gel, biological membrane, BMP and lyophilized graft. The Group II was treated with biopolymer gel, BMP and lyophilized graft. And the group III (positive control group) was treated with BMP, lyophilized graft and biological membrane. In the negative control group (Group IV) a defect was made in the rat calvaria and the animals were sacrificed immediately after the surgery. The animals of experimental groups and positive control group were slaughtered after subsequent periods of 90 and 180 days. In these periods, the histological analysis and image assessment by cone bean tomographic imaging were obtained. RESULTS: There was highest bone tissue formation with statistically significant results in the groups that associated biopolymer gel and membrane (Group I), followed by the group III (BMP, lyophilized graft and biological membrane). The lower bone formation occurred in the group not using the sugarcane biopolymer gel (Group II). The radiolucent areas of the analyzes of 180 days among the groups studied were respectively, 14.98 mm², 26.65 mm² and 35.81 mm². CONCLUSION: The biopolymer gel showed to be an excellent bone morphogenetic protein carrier, probably by facilitating the controlled release of these proteins in the process of bone repair
