How academic was Plato’s Academy?: a judicious historical review
Thanks to Plato (and Hekademos, perhaps, not to mention Horace), there are 'academies' littering the Western world's educational sphere - from the Academy of Athens (founded 1926) to Athens Academy (a college preparatory school in Georgia, USA). And 'academic' has entered global Englishes as both noun and adjective. My title plays on one of the more debased versions of the English adjective 'academic', meaning (in Webster's definition) 'Theoretical, speculative, having no practical or useful significance'. Scholars have taken polarised views of Plato's original Academy: on the one hand (μέν), it was devoted to - and intended to generate nothing more or less than - pure θεωρία (hence the superscription above the entrance - allegedly, as alleged 10 centuries later anyhow: http://plato-dialogues.org/faq/faq009.htm); on the other hand (δέ) it was the Rand Corporation of Classical Greece (Trevor Saunders, in a Festschrift for quite another Webster). A conceptual design study of the reusable reentry satellite
Experimentation leading to an understanding of life processes under reduced and extremely low gravitational forces will profoundly contribute to the success of future space missions involving humans. In addition to research on gravitational biology, research on the effects of cosmic radiation and the interruption and change of circadian rhythms on life systems is also of prime importance. Research in space, however, is currently viewed by biological scientists as an arena that is essential, yet largely inaccessible to them for their experimentation. To fulfill this need, a project and spacecraft system described as the Reusuable Reentry Satellite or Lifesat has been proposed by NASA
Strengthening Health Systems and Improving the Capacity of Pediatric Care Centers to Respond to Epidemics Such as COVID-19 in Resource-limited Settings
The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted in dramatic fashion the weaknesses of health systems worldwide in responding to emerging pandemics [1]. Although many governments, nongovernment organizations (NGOs) and multinational organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) have prioritized the strengthening of health systems, and developed pandemic preparedness plans, the world’s uneven (and often belated) response to the COVID-19 pandemic suggests that many of these plans were insufficient and that the global health community will need to improve resource allocation, information-sharing and government coordination in order to minimize the impact of future outbreaks [2]. We are particularly concerned that existing preparedness plans do not adequately address the special needs of children; the relatively low hospitalization and death rates of children in the COVID-19 pandemic may result in the continuation of those needs being overlooked [3]. Additionally, the needs of children in low-resource settings, which differ in many ways from those of wealthier settings, may be even further at stake. As health systems begin to reassess their preparedness plans, this pandemic gives the world the opportunity to put safety measures in place to protect children now, and in turn to prepare for future outbreaks that will, sooner or later, affect children to a greater degree than this pandemic has thus far
