Studies in life history of Murgantia histronics in Tennessee

This thesis consists of the results of a number of studies in the life history of the Murgantia histrionica, Hahn. This insect was chosen first, because of its great economic importance in Tennessee and secondly, because of a lack of knowledge of control methods. It was believed that if more were known about the life history of the insect, better control methods could be worked out. The experiments were all carried on, in glass cages and vials, in room 400 Morrill Hall. The work was started in September 1927, and ended July 25, 1928. It was originally intended that the work cover only eight months, but on account of the poor results obtained in the winter, it was decided to continue the work through June of 1928. The experiments are not as scientific as they should be. on account of not having any way of controlling temperature and humidity in the room where the experiments were conducted. I had no way of telling the daily maximum and minimum temperature, and the humidity of the room. Neither did I have a way of recording the hourly temperature of the room. In the winter the temperature of the room fluctuated a great deal. Sometimes there was practically no heat at all in the room; at other times the temperature was ninety. After the beginning of warm weather in the spring, I used temperature and humidity data furnished me by the Knoxville Weather Bureau

Rates of SNAP Receipt Stabilize or Drop in All Regions for First Time Since Great Recession

From the beginning of the Great Recession in 2007 until 2012, receipt of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits grew steadily. Participation and funding rose to historic levels driven by the changing economy, intensified efforts to enroll eligible populations, and expanded benefits and eligibility via the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Throughout the recovery, SNAP has acted as an economic stimulus and part of a safety net for struggling families. In 2013, SNAP receipt fell slightly—a decline perhaps indicative of a slowly recovering economy. However, substantially more households still reported receiving SNAP benefits in 2013 than before the recession

The enigma of facial asymmetry:is there a gender specific pattern of facedness?

    Get PDF
Although facial symmetry correlates with facial attractiveness, human faces are often far from symmetrical with one side frequently being larger than the other (Kowner, 1998). Smith (2000) reported that male and female faces were asymmetrical in opposite directions, with males having a larger area on the left side compared to the right side, and females having a larger right side compared to the left side. The present study attempted to replicate and extend this finding. Two databases of facial images from Stirling and St Andrews Universities, consisting of 180 and 122 faces respectively, and a third set of 62 faces collected at Abertay University, were used to examine Smith's findings. Smith's unique method of calculating the size of each hemiface was applied to each set. For the Stirling and St Andrews sets a computer program did this automatically and for the Abertay set it was done manually. No significant overall effect of gender on facial area asymmetry was found. However, the St Andrews sample demonstrated a similar effect to that found by Smith, with females having a significantly larger mean area of right hemiface and males having a larger left hemiface. In addition, for the Abertay faces handedness had a significant effect on facial asymmetry with right-handers having a larger left side of the face. These findings give limited support for Smith's results but also suggest that finding such an asymmetry may depend on some as yet unidentified factors inherent in some methods of image collection

Weak convergence of spectral shift functions revisited

We study convergence of the spectral shift function for the finite interval restrictions of a pair of full-line Schr\"odinger operators to an interval of the form (,)(-\ell,\ell) with coupled boundary conditions at the endpoints as \ell\to \infty in the case when the finite interval restrictions are relatively prime to those with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Using a Krein-type resolvent identity we show that the spectral shift function for the finite interval restrictions converges weakly to that for the pair of full-line Schr\"odinger operators as the length of the interval tends to infinity.Comment: 23 page

Naturopathic Physician Attitudes and Practices for Vaccination and Primary Care in the State of Vermont

    Get PDF
Introduction: Recent increase in measles cases has sparked vaccination controversy. Naturopathic physicians (NDs) have been recognized as primary care providers by VT since 2012. It is not well understood how NDs address vaccination with patients. Our goal was to determine how Vermont NDs address vaccines and preventative care with their patients.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1234/thumbnail.jp
