A Mexican American’s Introspective on Identity and Embodiment of the Lester Horton Technique
In this thesis, I analyze the cultural complexity I embody as a Mexican American. By revealing and naming the invisible power dynamics of white supremacy through a multiplicity of perspectives, I explain and give examples of stereotypes imposed on me and how it benefits whiteness. Having adapted to American culture, I have created a cultural multiplicity that has steered me away from my Mexican culture. I express the conflict of my consciousness when I feel I do not belong in specific spaces because of my heritage or tokenism. The embodiment of the Lester Horton Technique is my passport to navigate through life as a Mexican American as it opens doors to dance institutions and spaces, which can be challenging in becoming a part of their faculty or group
Valorization of keratin biofibers for removing heavy metals from aqueous solutions
Four common waste keratin biofibers (human hair, dog hair, chicken feathers, and degreased wool) have been used as biosorbents for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Different parameters of the biosorption processes were optimized in batch systems. For multiple-metal systems, consisting of a mixture of eight metal ions [Cr(III), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II)], the total metal biosorption increased in the order: degreased wool¿>¿chicken feathers¿>¿human hair¿>¿dog hair. From the kinetic models tested, the pseudo-second-order model provided better results. Furthermore, biosorption isotherms of Pb(II) with the different keratin biofibers fitted the Langmuir model. Surface morphology of the biosorbents were analyzed before and after the sorption using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The keratin biofibers tested are potentially good sorbents of metal ions, with degreased wool and chicken feathers being the more efficient onesPostprint (author's final draft

Properties and optimal manufacturing conditions of chicken feathers thermoplastics biocomposites
The aim of this study was the analysis and characterization of composites based on thermoplastics (ethylene vinyl acetate, polypropilene and high-density polyethylene) and chicken feathers. Several composite samples with a content of 20% v/v of chicken feathers have been studied to determine the optimal manufacturing conditions of temperature, mixing time, and mixing speed to achieve the best tensile properties. The results have shown that the addition of micronized chicken feather (20% v/v) to thermoplastic matrices increases stiffness and provides a more brittle behavior. Ethylene vinyl acetate matrix also shows an ability to participate in second-order intermolecular interactions with chicken feathers, providing better tensile properties (tensile strength and toughness) than polypropilene and high-density polyethylene. Optimal manufacturing conditions were found for a mixing time of around 5min; a mixing speed of 50rmin 1 ; and temperature values of 160 C in case of high-density polyethylene, 120 C for ethylene vinyl acetate, and 170 C for polypropilene. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy analysis have been performed in order to provide further understanding of the compatibility and microstructural features that support the tensile properties of the materialsPostprint (author’s final draft
Simulation of a solar assisted counterflow tunnel dehydrator
A widely used class of vegetable dehydration systems are the “tunnel-and-truck” dehydrators, where the prepared material lies over horizontal trays stored in trucks which move discontinuously in opposite direction of the air flow. This way the driest product is facing the inlet hot and dry air blowed to the system. When product of one truck is ready, is removed from the tunnel leaving space for advance the remaining truck one place forward. This way, a new truck full of wet product can be inserted at the end of the tunnel. The hermal energy required for the process can be supplied by several sources including gas, biomass, solar energy or a combination of them. Solar energy is for free but reaches the
Earth with quite a low flux and a strongly fluctuating rate. This imposes the need of special designs and control strategies. This paper presents a study based on simulation models of the dehydrator and the solar thermal system. The dehydrator simulation model is tuned to match experimental data from a particular prototype based on fossil fuel. A solar system simulation model is then applied to the analysis of different design options.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech
Structural and numerical identifiability of thermal resistances in plate fin-and-tube heat exchangers using manufacturer catalog data
Plate fin-and-tube heat exchangers, commonly known as heating/cooling coils, are widely used in HVAC systems to transfer heat to or from air. A problem of practical interest in coil simulation is to identify the thermal resistances on the air and liquid sides using manufacturer catalog data. Manufacturers rarely provide detailed information (geometry and circuitry) of the coils they sell or install in factory-made equipment such as air handling units or fan-coils; they just report the performance of the coil at a few typical operating conditions. This paper examines whether it is mathematically possible to back-calculate the thermal resistances on the air and liquid sides using a set of performance data that is disturbed by noise (e.g. measurement errors) and consists of operating cases in which none of the two thermal resistances can be neglected. The first part of the paper discusses the structural identifiability problem, that is, the mathematical possibility of fitting Nusselt-type correlations for air and liquid, as well as a constant resistance for the wall. The second part of the paper discusses the possibility of calculating the numerical value of the parameters of the Nusselt correlations (constant or constant and exponent) using noisy data. The analysis is applied to a typical coil, which is simulated by means of a mathematical modelUniversidad de Málaga.
