    An extremely high velocity molecular jet surrounded by an ionized cavity in the protostellar source Serpens SMM1

    We report ALMA observations of a one-sided, high-velocity (\sim80 km s1^{-1}) CO(J=21J = 2 \rightarrow 1) jet powered by the intermediate-mass protostellar source Serpens SMM1-a. The highly collimated molecular jet is flanked at the base by a wide-angle cavity; the walls of the cavity can be seen in both 4 cm free-free emission detected by the VLA and 1.3 mm thermal dust emission detected by ALMA. This is the first time that ionization of an outflow cavity has been directly detected via free-free emission in a very young, embedded Class 0 protostellar source that is still powering a molecular jet. The cavity walls are ionized either by UV photons escaping from the accreting protostellar source, or by the precessing molecular jet impacting the walls. These observations suggest that ionized outflow cavities may be common in Class 0 protostellar sources, shedding further light on the radiation, outflow, and jet environments in the youngest, most embedded forming stars.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letter

    Spatio-temporal analysis of mortality among children under the age of five in Manhiça (Mozambique) during the period 1997-2005

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Reducing childhood mortality is the fourth goal of the Millennium Development Goals agreed at the United Nations Millennium Summit in September 2000. However, childhood mortality in developing countries remains high. Providing an accurate picture of space and time-trend variations in child mortality in a region might generate further ideas for health planning actions to achieve such a reduction. The purpose of this study was to examine the spatio-temporal variation for child mortality rates in Manhiça, a district within the Maputo province of southern rural Mozambique during the period 1997-2005 using a proper generalized linear mixed model.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The results showed that childhood mortality in all the area was modified from year to year describing a convex time-trend but the spatial pattern described by the neighbourhood-specific underlying mortality rates did not change during the entire period from 1997 to 2005, where neighbourhoods with highest risks are situated in the peripheral side of the district. The spatial distribution, though more blurred here, was similar to the spatial distribution of child malaria incidence in the same area. The peak in mortality rates observed in 2001 could have been caused by the precipitation system that started in early February 2000, following which heavy rains flooded parts of Mozambique's southern provinces. However, the mortality rates at the end of the period returned to initial values.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results of this study suggest that the health intervention programmes established in Manhiça to alleviate the effects of flooding on child mortality should cover a period of around five years and that special attention might be focused on eradicating malaria transmission. These outcomes also suggest the utility of suitably modelling space-time trend variations in a region when a point effect of an environmental factor affects all the study area.</p

    ThresholdROC: Optimum Threshold Estimation Tools for Continuous Diagnostic Tests in R

    We introduce an R package that estimates decision thresholds in diagnostic settings with a continuous marker and two or three underlying states. The package implements parametric and non-parametric estimation methods based on minimizing an overall cost function, as well as confidence interval estimation approaches to account for the sampling variability of the cut-off. Further features of the package include sample size determination and estimation of diagnostic accuracy measures. We used randomly generated data and two real datasets to illustrate the capabilities and characteristics of the package

    Validating a common tick survey method: cloth-dragging and line transects

    Cloth-dragging is the most widely-used method for collecting and counting ticks, but there are few studies of its reliability. By using cloth-dragging, we applied a replicated line transects survey method, in two areas in Sweden with different Ixodes ricinus tick-densities (low at Grimsö and high at Bogesund) to evaluate developmental stage specific repeatability, agreement and precision in estimates of tick abundance. 'Repeatability' was expressed as the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), 'agreement' with the Total Deviation Index (TDI) and 'precision' by the coefficient of variation (CV) for a given dragging distance. Repeatability (ICC) and agreement (TDI) were higher for the most abundant instar (nymphs) and in the area of higher abundance. At Bogesund tick counts were higher than at Grimsö and so also repeatability, with fair to substantial ICC estimates between 0.22 and 0.75, and TDI ranged between 1 and 44.5 counts of difference (thus high to moderate agreement). At Grimsö, ICC was poor to moderate and ranged between 0 and 0.59, whereas TDI remained low with estimates lower or equal to 1 count (thus high agreement). Despite a 100-fold lower abundance at Grimsö, the same level of precision for nymphs could be achieved with a 70% increase of dragging effort. We conclude that the cloth-dragging technique is useful for surveying ticks' and primarily to estimate abundance of the nymphal stage, whereas it rarely will be recommended for larvae and adults

    Inter-individual different responses to continuous and interval training in recreational middle-aged women runners

    A crucial subject in sports is identifying the inter-individual variation in response to training, which would allow creating individualised pre-training schedules, improving runner's performance. We aimed to analyse heterogeneity in individual responses to two half-marathon training programmes differing in running volume and intensity in middle-aged recreational women. Twenty women (40±7 years, 61±7kg, 167±6cm, VO2max=48±6 mL·kg-1·min-1) underwent either moderate-intensity continuous (MICT) or high-intensity interval (HIIT) 12-week training. They were evaluated before and after training with maximal incremental tests in the laboratory (VO2max) and in the field (time to exhaustion, TTE; short interval series and long run). All the women participated in the same half-marathon and their finishing times were compared with their previous times. Although the improvements in the mean finishing times were not significant, MICT elicited a greater reduction (3min 50s, P=0.298), with more women (70%) improving on their previous times, than HIIT (reduction of 2min 34s, P=0.197, 50% responders). Laboratory tests showed more differences in the HIIT group (P=0.008), while both groups presented homogeneous significant (P<0.05) increases in TTE. Both in the short interval series and in the long run, HIIT induced better individual improvements, with a greater percentage of responders compared to MICT (100% versus 50% in the short series and 78% versus 38% in the long run). In conclusion, variability in interindividual responses was observed after both MICT and HIIT, with some participants showing improvements (responders) while others did not (non-responders) in different performance parameters, reinforcing the idea that individualised training prescription is needed to optimise performance

    A 1.3 mm SMA Survey of 29 Variable Young Stellar Objects

Young stellar objects (YSOs) may undergo periods of active accretion (outbursts), during which the protostellar accretion rate is temporarily enhanced by a few orders of magnitude. Whether or not these accretion outburst YSOs possess similar dust and gas reservoirs to each other, and whether or not their dust and gas reservoirs are similar as quiescent YSOs, are issues yet to be clarified.Aims. The aim of this work is to characterize the millimeter thermal dust emission properties of a statistically significant sample of long and short duration accretion outburst YSOs (i.e., FUors and EXors) and the spectroscopically identified candidates of accretion outbursting YSOs (i.e., FUor-like objects). Methods. We have carried out extensive Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations mostly at ~225 GHz (1.33 mm) and ~272 GHz (1.10 mm), from 2008 to 2017. We covered accretion outburst YSOs located at 3σ significance. Detected sources except for the two cases of V883 Ori and NGC 2071 MM3 were observed with ~1″ angular resolution. Overall our observed targets show a systematically higher millimeter luminosity distribution than those of the M ∗ > 0.3 MClass II YSOs in the nearby (400 pc) low-mass star-forming molecular clouds (e.g., Taurus, Lupus, Upp Scorpio, and Chameleon I). In addition, at 1 mm our observed confirmed binaries or triple-system sources are systematically fainter than the rest of the sources even though their 1 mm fluxes are broadly distributed. We may have detected ∼30-60% millimeter flux variability from V2494 Cyg and V2495 Cyg, from the observations separated by approximately one year.Peer reviewe

    Assessment of aggressive bladder cancer mutations in plasma cell-free DNA

    Background and aimsThe spatial and temporal genetic heterogeneity of bladder cancer (BC) makes challenging to find specific drivers of metastatic disease, thus preventing to determine those BC patients at high risk of tumor progression. Our aim was to identify DNA mutations providing aggressive behavior to bladder tumors and analyze them in patients’ cell-free DNA (cfDNA) during their follow-up after radical cystectomy (RC) in order to monitor tumor evolution.MethodsSix BC patients who underwent RC and presented disease progression during their follow-up were included. Next-generation sequencing was used to determine somatic mutations in several primary tumor and metastatic specimens from each patient. Shared DNA mutations between primary bladder tumor and metastatic sites were identified in cfDNA samples through droplet digital PCR.ResultsBesides BC genetic heterogeneity, specific mutations in at least one of these genes —TERT, ATM, RB1, and FGFR3— were found in primary tumors and their metastases in all patients. These mutations were also identified in the patients’ cfDNA at different follow-up time points. Additionally, the dynamic changes of these mutations in cfDNA allowed us to determine tumor evolution in response to treatment.ConclusionThe analysis of BC mutations associated with poor prognosis in plasma cfDNA could be a valuable tool to monitor tumor evolution, thus improving the clinical management of BC patients

    Terms of reference for the mediterranean tuna habitat observatory initiative

    [EN] We present the Terms of Reference for a case study on a Mediterranean eco-region focusing on the environmental component of the Ecosystem Report Card. The objective of this case study is to describe and monitor the variability of environmental processes in the Mediterranean Sea that affect the ecology of large pelagic fishes, with a particular attention on tunas, and the possible role of climate change on this variability. Here we define the objectives and activities of the initiative, the participant roles, primary indicators and the methodological approach[FR] Ce document présente les termes de référence d’une étude de cas sur une écorégion méditerranéenne consacrée à la composante environnementale de la fiche informative sur les écosystèmes. L'objectif de cette étude de cas est de décrire et de suivre la variabilité des processus environnementaux en mer Méditerranée qui affectent l'écologie des grands poissons pélagiques, en accordant une attention particulière aux thonidés, et de déterminer le rôle possible du changement climatique sur cette variabilité.
