Transition from inspiral to plunge in precessing binaries of spinning black holes
We investigate the non-adiabatic dynamics of spinning black hole binaries by
using an analytical Hamiltonian completed with a radiation-reaction force,
containing spin couplings, which matches the known rates of energy and angular
momentum losses on quasi-circular orbits. We consider both a straightforward
post-Newtonian-expanded Hamiltonian (including spin-dependent terms), and a
version of the resummed post-Newtonian Hamiltonian defined by the Effective
One-Body approach. We focus on the influence of spin terms onto the dynamics
and waveforms. We evaluate the energy and angular momentum released during the
final stage of inspiral and plunge. For an equal-mass binary the energy
released between 40Hz and the frequency beyond which our analytical treatment
becomes unreliable is found to be, when using the more reliable Effective
One-Body dynamics: 0.6% M for anti-aligned maximally spinning black holes, 5% M
for aligned maximally spinning black hole, and 1.8% M for non-spinning
configurations. In confirmation of previous results, we find that, for all
binaries considered, the dimensionless rotation parameter J/E^2 is always
smaller than unity at the end of the inspiral, so that a Kerr black hole can
form right after the inspiral phase. By matching a quasi-normal mode ringdown
to the last reliable stages of the plunge, we construct complete waveforms
approximately describing the gravitational wave signal emitted by the entire
process of coalescence of precessing binaries of spinning black holes.Comment: 31 pages, 7 tables, and 13 figure
Iron Displacements and Magnetoelastic Coupling in the Spin-Ladder Compound BaFe2Se3
We report long-range ordered antiferromagnetism concomitant with local iron
displacements in the spin-ladder compound BaFeSe. Short-range magnetic
correlations, present at room temperature, develop into long-range
antiferromagnetic order below T = 256 K, with no superconductivity down to
1.8 K. Built of ferromagnetic Fe plaquettes, the magnetic ground state
correlates with local displacements of the Fe atoms. These iron displacements
imply significant magnetoelastic coupling in FeX-based materials, an
ingredient hypothesized to be important in the emergence of superconductivity.
This result also suggests that knowledge of these local displacements is
essential for properly understanding the electronic structure of these systems.
As with the copper oxide superconductors two decades ago, our results highlight
the importance of reduced dimensionality spin ladder compounds in the study of
the coupling of spin, charge, and atom positions in superconducting materials
A First Step Towards Automatically Building Network Representations
To fully harness Grids, users or middlewares must have some knowledge on the
topology of the platform interconnection network. As such knowledge is usually
not available, one must uses tools which automatically build a topological
network model through some measurements. In this article, we define a
methodology to assess the quality of these network model building tools, and we
apply this methodology to representatives of the main classes of model builders
and to two new algorithms. We show that none of the main existing techniques
build models that enable to accurately predict the running time of simple
application kernels for actual platforms. However some of the new algorithms we
propose give excellent results in a wide range of situations
A Renormalization Group Method for Quasi One-dimensional Quantum Hamiltonians
A density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method for highly anisotropic
two-dimensional systems is presented. The method consists in applying the usual
DMRG in two steps. In the first step, a pure one dimensional calculation along
the longitudinal direction is made in order to generate a low energy
Hamiltonian. In the second step, the anisotropic 2D lattice is obtained by
coupling in the transverse direction the 1D Hamiltonians. The method is applied
to the anisotropic quantum spin half Heisenberg model on a square lattice.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Heavy Quark diffusion from lattice QCD spectral functions
We analyze the low frequency part of charmonium spectral functions on large
lattices close to the continuum limit in the temperature region as well as for . We present evidence for the
existence of a transport peak above and its absence below . The
heavy quark diffusion constant is then estimated using the Kubo formula. As
part of the calculation we also determine the temperature dependence of the
signature for the charmonium bound state in the spectral function and discuss

Density Matrices for a Chain of Oscillators
We consider chains with an optical phonon spectrum and study the reduced
density matrices which occur in density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG)
calculations. Both for one site and for half of the chain, these are found to
be exponentials of bosonic operators. Their spectra, which are correspondingly
exponential, are determined and discussed. The results for large systems are
obtained from the relation to a two-dimensional Gaussian model.Comment: 15 pages,8 figure
Ecological implications of bovine tuberculosis in African buffalo herds
Following the recent invasion of bovine tuberculosis (BTB) into the Kruger National Park, South Africa, we conducted a study on the maintenance host, African buffalo, to investigate associations between BTB prevalence and calf:cow ratio, age structure, body condition, and endoparasite load. Statistical analyses compared herds of zero, medium (1–40%), and high (\u3e40%) BTB prevalence. To control for ecological variation across the park we collected data in northern, central, and southern regions and restricted some analyses to particular regions of the park. Body condition declined over the course of the 2001 dry season, and buffaloes in the southern region of the park, with the highest BTB prevalence, were in worse condition than buffaloes in the northern region (which receives less annual rainfall but is still virtually BTB-free). Herd-level analyses of the entire park, the south and central regions, and just the southern region all indicated that herds of higher BTB prevalence were in worse condition and lost condition faster through the dry season than herds of lower BTB prevalence. Fecal endoparasite egg counts increased during the dry season and were associated with both decreased body condition and increased BTB prevalence. Although we did not detect any obvious effect of BTB on the age structure of the buffalo population, our findings indicate early symptoms of wider scale BTB-related ecological disturbances: buffalo herds with high BTB prevalence appear more vulnerable to drought (because of a decrease in body condition and an increase in endoparasite load), and because lions selectively kill weak buffaloes their prey base is accumulating a disproportionately high prevalence of BTB, to which lions are susceptible
Histeridae and Staphylinidae (Coleoptera) from state of Acre, Brazil.
Histeridae and Staphylinidae are related families that share habitats and can be sampled by the same collection methods. However, there is a lack of regional lists of these families in several regions from Brazil. This study aims to present the first list of Histeridae and Staphylinidae from the state of Acre, Brazil. The list of species was elaborated based on the literature and study of some entomological collections. In total, 16 species and six genera of Histeridae, and 13 species and eight genera of Staphylinidae were recorded. Of all these, one species of Histeridae is recorded for the first time in Brazil. Ten species of Histeridae and five species of Staphylinidae are recorded for the first time in the state of Acre. In addition, information about known geographic distribution and ecology of these species are provided. We hope that our data can contribute to updating the Taxonomic Catalog of Brazilian Fauna (TCBF)
